Pope Leo XIV Becomes the First American Pope
Thursday, on the second day of voting, the papal conclave selected Cardinal Robert Francis to serve as the next pope. Many online were quick to scrutinize the Pope, discovering a past characterized by conservative theology and criticism of President Trump. What do you think of this new faith leader?
From The Washington Times. President Trump was quick to celebrate the historic election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost asĀ Pope Leo XIV: the first American to ascend to the papacy.

āCongratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just namedĀ Pope,ā President Trump wrote on Truth Social. āIt is such an honor to realize that he is the first AmericanĀ Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meetingĀ Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!ā …
The response across X came fast and loud, mixing patriotism, disbelief, jokes and early ideological debate. …
āThis is huge,ā wrote National Review commentator Kayla Bartsch on X. āI still canāt believe they elected an American.ā
Republican Matthew Foldi chimed in on X: āIt looks like the newĀ Pope is: An American. A Republican. Iām thinking weāre back.ā …
The tone on the right has been celebratory, but not without caveats. …
āAccording to hisĀ X/Twitter feed, the newly selected pope trashed Trump, trashed Vance, trashed border enforcement, endorsed DREAMer-style illegal immigration, repeatedly praised and honored George Floyd, and endorsed a Democrat senatorās call for more gun control,ā wrote conservative commentator Sean Davis.
While the conclave met, we encouraged believers to pray over the selection process with our new resource,Ā Praying about the Next Pope. Now that a new pope has been selected, we felt it would be helpful to pray through that resource’s prayer points again, this time with Pope Leo XIV in mind.
- Pray that Pope Leo XIV willĀ embrace the true teachings of the Word of God and promote biblical positions as he leads the Catholic church.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptableĀ (Romans 12:2).
- Pray that Pope Leo XIV would seek to hear Godās voice.
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known (Jeremiah 33:3).
- Pray there would be a shift in the positions of the cardinals of the church, bringing soft conservatives and conservatives in the majority.
For āWhoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evilā (1 Peter 3:10-12).
- Pray that Pope Leo XIV would hold a strong biblical stance specifically on the protection of life, biblical identity, religious freedom, personal responsibility, and worshipping the Creator not the created.
Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus (Revelation 14:12).

I pray that the Holy Spirit will come upon Pope Leo XIV with a fresh and new anointing, pouring new wine in new wineskins. May he be used to bring unity to the divided Catholic Church with clear biblical teaching. And may this unity spill over to other Christian denominations as well.
May he speak truth of both Godās Mercy and His Justice.
In the Name of Jesus.
I pray that Pope Leo will seek God for all and stand for the truth of the Word of God. I pray his relationship and fellowship will be for God’s purpose.
I believe a Pope should concentrate on shepherding the flock first and refrain from thrashing our President.
He was groomed by his predecessor who was a communist and a NGO supporter.
Lest anyone think this is harsh.I was raised a Catholic.
Oh, Rosemarie don’t say such things it is not true or Christian. As a Christian leader he should speak out on immoral actions – even by America and Trump.
His predecessor was not a communist, and NGOs do immense good think of Franklin Graham.
I pray that he will stand for the truth regardless of who will not hear. I pray that truth and love will be for Abba Father, His people, His Word, and His grace. I pray that his decisions will be based on Abba Father’s word.
Please read a translation of Pope Leo XIV first blessing and comments. He is a follower of Jesus Christ. He spoke words that are biblical. By the way, Catholic means universal, all inclusive.
“Catholic” means a particular sect of Christianity; “catholic” means universal.
Please guide and direct the new Pope in all that he says and does, Lord Jesus.
As a cradle Catholic, I pray for Pope Leo XIV, our new āpapaā that he will be faithful to the teachings of Jesus and His Church on earth, the Roman Catholic Church. The meaning of the word catholic is universal and we are neither conservative nor liberal – we are catholic. So letās unite as brothers and sisters and follow Jesus and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Habemus Papam! Thank you God!!
I pray that he & many following that religion would seek the truth. The word of God says Jesus is the way , the truth, and the light, no man takes that position. The Lord is using this time to draw people to seek Him. I pray this pope & many of his followers would do that.
I pray for Robert Francis, YHVH, to come into a saving knowledge of Yeshua through hearing and responding to the unadulterated Gospel, and therefore into relationship with You. May he come out of all the traditions and doctrines of man, and adhere to Your Word as Truth.
I would ask if this pope actually knows Christ as his savior. Please do an in-depth study of his past. He closely resembles the previous pope.
Many parishes no longer recognize the pope as their headship, rather, they choose to follow the old traditional Catholic values, Latin Mass, etc. and follow Christ as their authority, not man.
Please, I realize this is probably not your intention but can we just stop our prejudgments and instead pray for Pope Leo?
Keith’s question is valid. If Jesus is not the pope’s Lord and Savior, we should be praying for his salvation.
I trust God will guide this pope. I pray that this pope will not be a politician like the last one.

I too hope and Pray that POPE LEO will remain in the LIGHT of the LORD OUR GOD…..that he will not be political…that he
will ONLY preach the TRUE WORD of GOD!!!!!
We traditional CATHOLICS want TRADITION and consistency….we do NOT desire to be PROGRESSIVE…GOD was not
OF THIS WORLD, rather HE WAS in the WORLD NOT OF IT!!!
May HE be the MOUTHPIECE OF GOD”S teachings and HIS words…NOT what HE thinks GOD has stated, rather
the actual words of THE LORD OUR GOD!!!!!
Prayerfully, Pope Leo will honor the word of God and lead the Roman Catholic church in truth & righteousness.
I pray that the new pope will actually lead the catholic people in the true gospel of the Bible, not a divisive political rant. With so many Catholics who hang their lives on the very words of the popeā¦.may he have a personal encounter with Jesus that will transform his life and the lives of millions that follow the catholic faith.
Being raised a catholic I know how empty and void my life was of a personal relationship with Jesus. We were never taught the Bible, rather we were taught religion and traditionsā¦and how to pray to saints! May there be a massive revival among the Catholics! One that would far exceed what was called the ācharismatic movementā in the Catholic Church many years ago.
Amen! Kathleen
I too was a Catholic and didn’t know to have a relationship with Jesus! He is the Way, the Truth and the Life!!
I pray that the Pope becomes filled with the Holy Spirit, if he is not. I pray that in his office because he influences many Catholics. I pray that he turns Catholics to a close relationship with Jesus and to study the Word of God.
In Jesus’ name.
May the Lord bless this man with a missionary heart as he leads the Roman Catholics around the world.
God, call us to pray for him. Remind us Holy Spirit and help us to pray. In Jesus Name amen.
I pray the Pope would get back to the Bible also and pray to the Lord, not to saints.
I grew up in protestant church and became catholic as a missionary in Asia. Please know, my brothers and sisters, that there are many true believers in every form of Christian worship. Please continue to pray for this pope, as I sense a deep connection with Holy Spirit in him.
Lord, we pray in thanksgiving that you will continue to lead and guide Pope Leo (14) in righteousness and holiness. Grant wisdom and understanding in all his endeavors. Amen
Wouldnāt it be wonderful if the Vaticans foremost objective was to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world !!! Father God may it be so in our Savior Jesus name !!!
Oh and by the way IFA , I like your new format !!
Father please continue your hand of blessings upon IFA . Thank you for all the hard working individuals it takes to accomplish this wonderful publication !!
His past criticism of Trump and Vance show that he has a good grasp of the gospel of grace. He should do great good if he can keep on pointing out where the US administration is departing from righteousness.
Criticism of our government is not a Popeās job.His job is to lead the flock and clean up the church first.
Rosemarie, I would respectfully disagree. The world could’ve used a disagreeable Pope during the rise of the Nazies.
