Omar Declines Comment on Weapons Investigation Involving Her Son
Minneapolis police executed a search warrant on Aug. 25 at a residence shared by Adnan Hirsi, the son of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and his roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, according to published reports. Officers reportedly recovered multiple firearms and ammunition at the home, and Abdi was arrested on a weapons charge. Hirsi was not arrested, and no allegation of wrongdoing has been made against him.

The search followed a traffic stop in which Abdi, 22, was cited for driving without a valid license and proof of insurance. Officers impounded his vehicle and discovered a firearm inside, according to reports. Abdi has a criminal record that includes a felony conviction. The investigation that produced the search warrant developed from that finding.
When Omar was approached on Capitol Hill and asked whether she knew why the search occurred, or whether she would advise her son to move, she did not respond and kept walking.
What Is Known and What Is Not
The reported facts of the case are limited. Police have not released a detailed account of what the warrant sought or what was recovered beyond the firearms and ammunition described in news coverage. Abdi faces a weapons charge, which means he is accused, not convicted, and he is presumed innocent unless and until the case is resolved in court. Hirsi has not been charged with any crime. An attorney for Abdi could not be identified in published accounts, and it is not clear whether he has entered a plea.
Omar’s office has not issued a public statement on the search.
The Political Context
The episode draws attention because of Omar’s record on firearms policy. She has been a vocal supporter of stricter gun laws, including expanded background checks and so-called red-flag laws, which allow courts to order the temporary removal of firearms from people deemed a danger to themselves or others. Minnesota enacted a red-flag law in 2023, and federal legislation in 2022 expanded background check requirements for buyers under 21 and created incentives for states to adopt similar statutes.
Minnesota law already prohibits people convicted of certain felonies from possessing firearms, and it is a crime to knowingly transfer a firearm to someone barred from owning one. The reported presence of multiple firearms in a home connected to a sitting member of Congress, and the arrest of a roommate with a felony record, raises questions that a police investigation will have to answer rather than a press account.
Omar has represented Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District since 2019. She has not commented on the search despite repeated opportunities to do so.
Why It Matters
Scripture calls believers to honest dealing and to consistency between what a person says in public and how they live in private. That standard applies to every public official, regardless of party, and it applies without regard to whether the official is one voters admire or oppose. Christians should be careful here in two directions at once. They should not rush to assign blame to family members who have not been accused of anything, and they should not let political sympathy soften a standard they would apply to anyone else. The deeper issue is one of personal responsibility. Laws about firearms depend on households taking seriously who lives under their roof and what is kept there, and no statute can substitute for that diligence.
Let us pray for truth to come out in this investigation, for the safety of the Minneapolis community, and for public officials to serve with integrity and transparency.
