Almost half of adults in the United States believe that the Bible should influence the laws, with over a quarter saying that it should overrule the will of the people, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center.

A report by Pew’s Fact Tank published Monday found that in a survey of American adults, 49 percent of respondents believe that the Bible should have either “a great deal” or “some” influence on U.S. laws.

By contrast, 19 percent of respondents said they believe that the Bible should have “not much” influence on the laws, while 31 percent responded “none at all.”

Among those who said the Bible should have “a great deal” or “some” influence on laws, 28 percent said they believe the Bible should overrule the will of the people when they conflict.

White evangelicals were the religious group most likely to support the Bible having influence on laws, with 58 percent of respondents saying it should have “a great deal” of influence and 31 percent saying it should have “some” influence.

Among white evangelical respondents who supported biblical influence on laws, 68 percent believe that the Bible should overrule the will of the people when they conflict. This was the largest support for that answer among all surveyed religious groups.

Black Protestants also largely supported biblical influence on laws, with 47 percent responding with “a great deal” and 29 percent responding with “some.”

For the report, Pew used data drawn from its American Trends Panel, which was conducted Feb. 4-15 and had a sample of 6,395 with a margin of error of plus or minus 1.6 percentage points.

In their report, Pew acknowledged that they did not ask respondents what they specifically thought of when hearing about possible biblical influence on law.

In January, the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Chicago released a survey indicating that white evangelical Protestants were more likely than the general population to support religious influence on government policy.

Drawn from a sample of 1,053 adults conducted last December with a margin of error of 4 percentage points, the AP/NORC survey found that on most issues, majorities of white evangelicals said religion should have “a lot” or “some” influence.

For example, 80 percent of white evangelicals surveyed said religion should have “a lot” or “some” influence when it comes to abortion policies, versus 41 percent of all other respondents.

It was good enough for the Constitution, it is a must now.

The Bible says that we have peace when righteous men rule. However, most pastors say we should not be in politics!!!! We will never have Biblical values in our government unless Pastors and Christians are willing to discuss all issues and run for political offices.

Dear Dave and Michael: Our government and the formation of our country is and was formed and founded on God and His Word. David Barton of Wallbuilders has a DVD A Tour of the Capitol. It is a two hour presentation and the presence of the Lord is heavy on it, bringing me and many to tears. Please see it. There was a thriving church in the Capital building for over 100 years. Please inform yourself from this DVD of our historical and religious background!!! Thank you.

So far, all of the comments I read are in agreement. AMEN What we need now more than ever, is prayer that unbelievers and the ones who are only lukewarm to wake up. History is here for a reason. The Bible will clearly tell us how to live life. We need only to study, be mentored and pray, pray and pray some more. There is only one reason for lukewarm people and those not wanting the Bible in the government or any part of the constitution. That is from the power of the devil. The sad part is so many do not even know they are under the influence of the devil. They choose to call it freedom of choice, not realizing the consequences of the choices they are making.

We need to know that our Constitution was formed from the Bible when our forefather,(most were pastors)drew it up. That is where truth comes from. Our laws are framed from the Word of God! Jesus is the Truth!(John 14:6)

I agree the Bible should influence the country’s laws. This country was founded on Freedom of Religion. I also feel those people who do agree should vote to get those who do not agree out of office.

JUST FINISHED READING JUDGES – THE COUNTRY OF ISRAEL APOSTATIZED FROM GOD AND WERE PUNISHED REPEATEDLY FOR “EVERYONE DID THAT WHICH WAS EVIL IN THEIR SIGHT. ARE NOT MANY OF OUR GREAT LAWS IN U S A, BASED ON BIBLICAL COVENANTS? WHY NOT PRESENTLY? LET’S BRING BACK GOD IN THIS ONCE GREAT COUNTRY. “WITHOUT HIM WE ARE NOTHING.”

That’s correct, Kenneth. The way Moses was suppose to set up government while the Children of Israel were heading to the promised land. The TEN COMMANDMENTS from GOD. The judiciary in number according to the degree of offense. You are correct. We are nothing without HIM.

Creation came to life by the breath and the word of the living God. In the beginning was the word. The word of God says, “Man must not live by bread alone, but by the very word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” GOD’S WORD IS THE ANSWER FROM THE BEGINNING AND IT MUST CONTINUE UNTIL THE END. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. God’s Word is the Law!

I believe that each individual person should be seeking G-d’s voice in all decisions and following G-d’s word. If we are doing this, then it will automatically influence whatever laws are put into place. Unfortunately, most people are not following G-d’s word or hearing his voice; hence laws are being put into place that are not in line with G-d’s word. However, G-d gave us free will. We will reap what we sow. We need to pray that more people are elected to office who believe in the Lord and we need to back it up with actions to do as much as we can to make it happen and to help non believers see the truth, in my opinion.
