We know the Trump administration intends to dismantle the Department of Education, but what would that actually look like? Education Secretary Linda McMahon shared her preference in a recent interview.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon would like Congress to use a number of small bills to dismantle the Department of Education, she told The Daily Signal in an exclusive interview.
Who is praying on the wall?
The Supreme Court gave McMahon the OK to continue dismantling the Department of Education on July 14. The department is now able to move forward with 1,300 layoffs and redirecting resources to the states.
On Tuesday morning, McMahon and House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg, R-Mich., discussed developing smaller bills that move certain Education Department programs under other government agencies.
The next rescissions package will include cuts to previously approved education funding, The Daily Signal reported Tuesday.
“Rather than trying to combine all of education going back to the states in one large, all-encompassing bill,” McMahon said, “I was talking to him about, did he think there would be a greater appetite to develop programs and prove that they work?”
McMahon thinks that approach would have the smoothest path to having Congress vote to end the department in its current form while making sure some programs continue, she said.
She wants crucial functions of the Department of Education, such as special-needs education and student loans, “to flourish and to even operate better and certainly more efficiently and more economically in other areas.”
McMahon said she would like to codify the department’s workforce development partnership with the Department of Labor. The Education Department is also considering moving student loans under the Treasury Department or the Small Business Administration and having the Department of Health and Human Services take over Individuals with Disabilities Education Act programs, she said, adding that nothing is set in stone at this time.
The American people gave Congress a mandate to rightsize the Department of Education, Walberg said. He plans to help the education secretary follow through on her promise.
“As Secretary McMahon has said on numerous phone calls and in her testimony to this committee, congressional action is needed to fully dissolve the department and reroute funding to go directly to the states,” Walberg told The Daily Signal. “For far too long, the Department of Education has failed our children, and we must get this right for their sake.”
Education Committee member Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, said he would support both congressional paths to dismantling the department.
“Whether it’s done through one big bill or a series of smaller ones, the goal is the same: Return education to parents, local leaders, and state authorities—where it belongs,” he told The Daily Signal.
The Trump administration’s goal is to get rid of bureaucracy and red tape so more money that Congress appropriates to the department can go to the states, McMahon said.
“There’s just a lot that we can do to provide best practices to states and to help develop tool kits to give to the states and say, ‘This is what we found has worked in other areas. Take from this what might work in yours and have that as a helpful guide,‘” she said.
McMahon said she is “incredibly pleased” with the Supreme Court ruling allowing her to carry out President Donald Trump’s March 20 executive order directing her to take all necessary steps to close the department.
“I was not surprised with the ruling, because I thought it was actually the only ruling they could really come back with, because I think the president was certainly acting within his constitutionally delegated authority,” she said, “and we’re prepared to move forward at a good pace.”

I don’t think there is any action more important than removing the tentacles of federal funding, and all the related indoctrination that has been inserted under that aegis, from every school. State controlled funding is almost as insidious, as teachers’ unions have bought most politicians, whether they are federal or state. NO funding from ANYWHERE except the local community must become a sacred rule, regardless of the supposed “inequity” of local funding. It must be the parents and local community who control what is taught to their children, and this will not happen if funding comes in from above.
We praise you again Lord God that education in America will soon be great again. Help, Linda McMahon and the other high-ranking authorities to succeed expeditiously in this endeavor. We thank you that you have and will continue to raise up the righteous to lead in this area of educating children with true history, our godly heritage as a nation, real education, as in true science, arithmetic and the other pertinent areas of study. Away with the garbage and nonsense that has been pushed upon these precious little ones. Oh, Lord, we thank you for having mercy upon them and for helping us to get it right . In your mighty and Holy Name Jesus we pray, amen!
Education should never belong to the government whether federal, state, or local. Children belong to their parents and ultimately God. People need to stop sending their kids to strangers to teach them God only knows what. Why did anyone give over this freedom??? I call it back in Jesus name! I call our freedoms and liberties BACK, I send the call to Heaven and command back all the devil stole! Jesus paid for us to obey Him! These standards set by man not God, these indoctrinations, these perversions and depravities must be destroyed! Whatever is not built by His hand must come down. People are perishing from being taught lies and hatred. We weren’t put on earth to absorb knowledge, we were put here to know God and make Him known. He needs to be the Lord and King over what we teach our kids through leading of Holy Spirit! The false god of knowledge must be dethroned. It wasn’t by Jesus’ leading who set these standards for children, children have been robbed of a godly and healthy childhood, had burdens put on their shoulders, are overstimulated by technology, and haven’t been able to learn through experience and life learning like God designed because of classroom setting structure not to mention the attacks on their bodies through the “healthcare” system as well as the breakdown of marriage and family. We need JESUS to address all of these things for the sake of every soul! Jesus, please do all these things, Lord right NOW!
I pray for wisdom to be imparted to the leaders who are overlooking the changes to come and what they should be. Let us help our children to love their country and to become good citizens working to improve things. Sometimes change is necessary. We need YOUR guidance. we need You.
God please guide our leaders very carefully as this bill affects our children and teachers that pour their heart into their students. Please continue to fund special education, Title 1, Head Start, and ADSIS grants that help our struggling kids get additional support with reading, writing and math. Give extra supports to classroom teachers who are already overwhelmed with mental health, and child/family behaviors in a world that is hurting. Get God back in our public schools!!! Protect our kids and teachers that spread your light to lost kids and families. Take out and cut unnecessary state testing that does very little to show where kids are at and costs millions of dollars!!! Great teachers, FAST benchmark testing 3x a year, and tests within curriculum already show where students are at and are communicated with families! There is so much waste with State comprehensive testing!!! Start there to cut. Don’t cut necessary funds that help kids learn!!! Be very careful with this! God you are in control!

Why should we bring down the department of education?
It needs evaluation and remodeling. What ever happen to teaching reading, writing and math.. We are failing our children and teaching them what should be the job of parents and churches. May the Spirit of the Lord guide us to do a better job.
Ask God to expose the enemy in education as well as each place of human influence and you’ll see. What’s not built by HIM will be destroyed! God is a God of freedom to obey HIM, liberty to fulfill HIS calling, not one entity controlling people and what they think. Control is of the devil. Freedom must be guarded and protected.

That’s an important question…
Because of the horrible job they have been doing. Because of the waste and fraud of money that never helped the children, only hurt them with ridiculous and disgusting agendas. It should always have been the states directing the education, not at the federal level. Education will now be able flourish and get back to what it should be so we won’t have illiteracy coming out of our high schools.

Please grant wisdom, YHVH, to Secretary McMahon and Congress in moving forward. Please grant a smooth transition as the DoE is dismantled, one step at a time. Please prepare leadership within the states to take up the mantle as it is transferred to them, in a cooperative and respectful manner. Please dismantle wrong principles and ineffective programs instituted by the DoE during their “reign”.
