I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we pray for Sen. Mitch McConnell's recovery, for clarity and candor from his office, and for wisdom for the senators who must govern while his seat hangs in uncertainty. We also pray for transparency regarding McConnell's wife. Expose any lies and corruption, and may truth and justice stand. Amen.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has scheduled votes, committees have posted hearings, and the Senate returns from its August recess on Monday. What remains unclear is whether Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell will be there. The former Republican leader has not appeared publicly or cast a vote since a June 14 fall at his Washington residence, and his office is declining to say when, or whether, he will return.

McConnell’s absence matters beyond one seat. The Senate operates on narrow margins, and a prolonged vacancy affects the vote counts that decide confirmations and legislation. It also raises the question every congressional office eventually faces: how much the public is owed when a lawmaker’s capacity to serve is in doubt.

From the Daily Caller:

Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell’s staff would not tell the Daily Caller News Foundation Thursday whether the senator would return after the August recess.

McConnell has not made a public appearance or cast a vote in the Senate since his hospitalization on June 14 after suffering a fall at his residence in Washington, D.C.

While married to McConnell, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials appointed Chao to at least four Chinese government positions since 2008, the DCNF exclusive learned. She did not disclose any of the reported Chinese positions during her Senate confirmation hearing in January 2017, which required her to list all positions held within the last ten years.

McConnell’s staff pointed the Daily Caller News Foundation to an Aug. 6 press release about his rehabilitation and said there was “no additional guidance or announcements” regarding his health or return. A District Fire and EMS dispatch call indicated paramedics appeared to perform CPR for a cardiac arrest. His office has released two photographs of the senator in the hospital with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, but has not provided medical updates or made him available for interviews. The DCNF requested a video interview on July 8; staff said they would keep the request “on hand” and have not followed up.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso and CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings all said on July 7 that they had spoken with McConnell for about 20 minutes. McConnell’s staff circulated their statements in a single email, which the DCNF characterized as suggesting a coordinated effort. McConnell left the hospital on Aug. 6 and entered physical therapy. He had been hospitalized at least three times since 2023 and froze while speaking at a podium in July of that year, and he announced in February 2025 that he would not seek reelection. The reporting on Chao concerns positions she is said to have held and did not list during her 2017 confirmation hearing. Chao has not responded to the DCNF’s questions, and the report’s sourcing was not detailed publicly.

Scripture is direct about the weight of public office: leaders are servants of the people, and the people are owed honesty about who is representing them. Transparency about a senator’s health is not a partisan matter. It is a question of whether Kentuckians and the nation have accurate information about the votes being cast, or not cast, in their name. The reporting about foreign government appointments is a separate cause for vigilance, because scripture calls God’s people to be wise as serpents about the influence of foreign powers and to hold leaders accountable with clear eyes. Let us also pray for McConnell, his family, and his recovery.

Let us pray for Sen. Mitch McConnell’s recovery, for clarity and candor from his office, and for wisdom for the senators who must govern while his seat hangs in uncertainty.
