For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is reporting that there are more schools in America that protect free speech than schools that obstruct students’ First Amendment rights.

For the first time in nearly 20 years of evaluating campus speech codes, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression found more schools with policies that “do not seriously imperil free expression” (73) than those that “clearly and substantially restrict free speech” (72) for the 19th edition of its “Spotlight on Speech Codes” released this week.

“This marks a substantial improvement” from last year’s report “and the reversal of a concerning trend,” FIRE said, with the number of schools earning the highest rating jumping by 10 and the number with the worst rating plunging by 26.

This is encouraging news! For years, we have seen colleges limit free speech, often for baseless, political reasons. Now, however, more and more colleges are choosing to protect the constitutional rights of their students.

Of course, this news should still concern us. As the article says, just under half of the schools looked at by FIRE are still restricting student’s free speech. Some schools may have shifted, but there are still far too many choosing to obstruct instead of protect.

Let’s thank God for this shift, and let’s continue to pray that schools choose to protect the free speech of their students!
