While the enemy is trying to divide us, the Lord wants to unite us. Where the world is trying to conform us, the Lord wants to set us apart. Until we learn to value our oneness in spirit more than we value our own opinions, we will be powerless against the spiritual giants in the land.

If we want to be effective change agents in our nation we can no longer stand alone. Even with carefully crafted prayers and declarations, good intentions, and a common desire to see God glorified, we must get past the things that divide us and learn to stand together concerning what matters most. Our covenant agreement in prayer is what will overturn the demonic covenants already made on our land. The only reason the rebels against God have any influence is because they stick together.

One of the biggest challenges in our national intercession is not caused by globalism, mistrust in our leaders, or corrupt government. It is getting past our different interpretations and perspectives of what is actually taking place. We are still learning how to corporately discern the spirit and see things as heaven does and not as man does. Due to focusing on side issues that raise suspicion and fear, we have not had the strength to stand “as one man” against the Accuser.

“. . . stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. . . . (Phil 1:27-28)

The only way we can do this is to discern rightly the spiritual battles at hand and choose wisely. Sometimes that means letting go of lesser things in order to engage in the critical things. Raising three children has taught me much about choosing battles. Though there are legitimate issues that may need to be addressed at some point in the family, our challenge has been to discern which ones are most important during critical times. Once we agree on what we see in the spirit, we can rightly discern which battles are worth fighting.

Our national crises require the corporate Church to stand together in what matters most. We need to choose our battles carefully. Though there are doctrinal differences that need to be sorted through and relational challenges that need attention, we can still agree on the issues that are most critical to our faith and freedom. Without the appropriate legislation to assure our religious freedom and qualified leaders who champion conservative values in the public square, our prayers for reformation will go unanswered. We don’t have to agree on our various methods, but we need to agree on our core values as Bible-believing, Christ-centered, Kingdom-minded citizens. As we focus on things above and not on things below, we will have the proper perspective needed to come into agreement.

We can’t change everything at once. Reformation of any lasting value takes time. Let’s choose our battles wisely and stick together.

Together they will be like warriors in battle trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets. They will fight because the Lord is with them, and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame. (Zec 10:5)
