A federal judge extended her temporary block on the Trump administration on Thursday, halting the President’s planned mass layoffs of federal workers.

District Judge Susan Illston of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California agreed with a group of labor unions, nonprofit organizations, and local governments who have sued the administration, alleging Trump lacks authority to initiate the large-scale layoffs without Congress’ approval and that an injunction is in the public interest.
“Presidents may set policy priorities for the executive branch, and agency heads may implement them. This much is undisputed,” Illston wrote in an order granting the extension. “Agencies may not conduct large-scale reorganizations and reductions in force in blatant disregard of Congress’s mandates, and a president may not initiate large-scale executive branch reorganization without partnering with Congress.”
The ruling affects hundreds of thousands of federal employees at 22 federal departments and agencies, including the Departments of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, State, Treasury and Veterans Affairs.
The Times notes that Illston also prevented the Trump administration from shutting down agency offices or programs. The President is also unable to transfer programs to other agencies.
This follows an earlier order that temporarily blocked the Trump administration while proceedings played out. That temporary block would have ended on Friday were it not for Illston’s new order. From the Times:
In an earlier May 9 order, Illston blocked around 20 federal agencies from carrying out mass layoffs for two weeks while she received further arguments from both parties in the lawsuit. She also ordered the reinstatement of workers who had already lost their jobs.
This is yet another way in which the judicial branch is seeking to fight and cripple the executive branch at every turn. Let’s pray that President Trump is able to reform the government through layoffs and transfers of programs, and let’s pray for wisdom for his administration as it fights these challenges in court!

It has passed time to clean up our courts and the many corrupts judges. I want my country back. Where our laws were followed or there were consequences. You broke the Law you paid the price. The open border has damaged our soul our citizens our democracy. One can not go into any country without going thru proper channels. Enter any country illegally and you go to jail. Why has our government not protected us ,oh must be payola. Is that how the Biden family got their money? The old saying follow the money . The trail starts with Nancy Pelosi, then go down the list. Lord, it is sick that a Christian organization tries to paint the judges who simply do their job as being biased against Trump. This site is clearly biased for him. How are we to pray when such false information is presented on a Christian web site. The church suffers as the Evangelical church loses members, particularly young, which guarantees a poor future for the Evangelical Church. May the Church turn back to the truth and may the gospel spread.

Political scientist Adam Bonica noted last Friday that Trump and the administration suffered a 96% loss rate in federal courts in the month of May. Those losses were NONPARTISAN: 72.2% of Republican-appointed judges and 80.4% of Democratic-appointed judges ruled against the administration.
The administration sustained more losses today.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that 14 states can proceed with their lawsuit against billionaire Elon Musk and the “Department of Government Efficiency.” The administration had tried to dismiss the case, but Chutkan ruled the states had adequately supported their argument that “Musk and DOGE’s conduct is ‘unauthorized by any law.’” “The Constitution does not permit the Executive to commandeer the entire appointments power by unilaterally creating a federal agency…and insulating its principal officer from the Constitution as an ‘advisor’ in name only,” she wrote.
Lord we ask no judge remain whose heart is set against the things You have ordained. Let Your righteousness and justice be our righteousness and justice and let all others fail in their attempts. May these judges who fail to remain mindful they have neither the power of the purse or the sword feel the impact from You our absolute King, our Judge and Lawgiver.
Dear Lord Jesus, We pray You could stop the Judicial overreach and Out of Control in our nation. Strengthen President Trump as he faces opposition and legal battles. President Trump does everything with Common Sense. That’s why he established DOGE – the Department of Government Efficiency to Drain the Swamp, Purge the federal government, Eliminate the Deep State, and Reduce wasteful spending and Foreign aid programs. We need Common Sense to restore Faith, Value, and Tradition to our country. Lord, We ask that You expose injustice and restrain any overreach of power — in our courts, our government, and all institutions. Grant our leaders wisdom, courage, and integrity. Let truth prevail, and may every judgment be rooted in righteousness, not politics.
Restore fairness to our land, and guide us back to a nation that honors You and defends liberty for all. In Jesus name. Amen.
God, we ask You to put an end to judicial overreach and tyranny in our nation. We pray You would strengthen the Trump administration as it fights in court!
We pray Father in the name of Jesus that Donald Trump and his administration will have the victory in court concerning the judicial overrreach and that these judges will be held fully accountable for their actions..
As Steve said, we are facing a Constitutional crisis. If the 3 branches of our government do not drive in their own lanes, what is now minor fender-benders (in contrast), will become a major collision. Some have questioned if we will have another Civil War – but I contend we are already experiencing it, thankfully not yet a military one. We are not one nation, and definitely not a nation under God – because much of our populace have become so polarized and so anti-God. YHVH, how we need You! If we are to survive as a nation, and fulfill our God-given destiny we will need to repent – do a 180 degree turn – and begin to live in obedience to Your commandments and precepts – beginning with the ekklesia.
There are three benches of government at the federal level. Selection of the leaders of the Executive and Legislative Branches is by the vote of the people. Selection of members of the Supreme Court is by appointment by the President and confirmation by the advice and consent of the Senate. It certainly seems absurd that underlings in the judicial branch should have the ability to overrule the policies, procedures and orders of the Executive or Legislative Branches. Such debate regarding the validity of Executive or Legislative Branch decisions should be restricted to the Supreme Court, else the balance of power is thwarted by unelected low level judges without any due process. This is a constitutional crisis.
Lord, we pray for Your intervention into this crisis in which low level judges are exceeding their authority. We pray for the Supreme court to make a ruling on these cases which threaten the balance of power among the three branches of federal government. You gave the founding fathers great wisdom regarding the structure of the government of the United States. We pray for wisdom, understanding and courage by members of the Supreme Courts to affirm the authority of the Executive and Legislative branches and protect the balance of power among the three branches.
Judge Ilston and other rogue judges need to be laid off and disbarred. Time to follow the money these judges are receiving.
Father God, thank you for protecting federal workers from being RIFed. Continue to provide them with job security that is afforded to them legally through laws and regulations. I pray this administration will follow the legal steps and procedures that are already in place if they wish to RIF federal workers. I pray for financial provision, new employment, and/or the ability to retire for these federal workers. Continue to strengthen them emotionally and mentally as they go through these difficult times of uncertainty and joblessness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
