I Prayed have prayed
Lord Jesus, You are always listening to our prayers, big or small. May we never doubt that You will answer in an extraordinary way.
Reading Time: 9 minutes

As we face the uncertainties of this world, it’s important that we learn to expect an answer from our Savior. When we pray, we should do so optimistically.

Something quite amazing happened to me the very night I began writing this article. I was out for a walk and heard an owl hooting in a nearby tree. I halted, mesmerized by the distinctive call. I decided to “interact” with this owl by making my own hooting sounds. Within seconds, a large, beautiful owl swooped down from the tree and flew right toward my head. I ducked down quickly as the owl turned and soared up to a nearby electrical pole.

Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.

In that moment, I was overwhelmed to realize how close the owl had come. Truthfully, I couldn’t believe it had responded to my “call.” In fact, I wasn’t expecting any reaction at all, but as this bird of prey came toward me, one thing grabbed my attention: those powerful wings! I was frightened, but also exhilarated to gaze upon that huge wingspan. I kept watching the owl for several minutes as it sat atop that pole, realizing that this wonderful creature of God is a reminder of His promises for those who put their trust in Him.

After that encounter, I recalled a book I had read years ago titled Nerves of Steel. That heroic tale is all about wings, but not of the bird kind: It tells the story of a courageous airplane pilot named Capt. Tammie Jo Shults. In 2018 she safely landed Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 after one of its engines had exploded at high altitude, causing rapid depressurization and multiple system failures. The aircraft could have come crashing down to the earth, but instead, something happened that showcases the awesomeness of God.

As Shults recounts in the book, the morning of April 17, 2018, began like any other. She awoke early, grabbed a cup of tea, and began reading her Bible. It was part of her daily routine to give this time to Jesus. She would read Scripture each morning and then consider carefully how the passages applied to her life and the lives of others. She writes:

“I always text a portion of what I’ve read to my family members as I pray over each of them and whatever they may be doing that day. Then, as I have ever since I became a pilot, I pray over my flights. I ask God to guide my judgment and airmanship. When I started flying for Southwest, I also started praying for my crew and passengers.”

Shults could not have known that morning that by the end of the day, her prayers would have a profound effect on the trajectory of the rest of her life — and of the lives of the nearly 150 passengers and crew on that flight.

The first leg of the flight went smoothly enough, from Nashville to New York City. Then, it was on to Dallas, and for that part of the trip, Shults handed over control to the co-pilot, First Officer Darren Ellisor. About 20 minutes into the flight, something unexpected happened: “It felt like a huge truck hit my side of the aircraft. My first thought was that we’d collided with another plane.” As the plane seemed to flip over onto its left side, Shults and Ellisor tried desperately to figure out what to do, realizing that they had an engine failure on their hands.

Oxygen masks fell from their compartments as the plane bounced violently. Inside the cockpit, meanwhile, smoke began to billow. “It was like being inside of a smoky snow globe that someone was shaking hard,” Shults recalled. At this point, the pilots heard a loud roar and felt a stabbing pain in their ears. The nose of the plane began to hurtle toward the ground.

“None of us understood what had happened until much later. The initial feeling of being hit by a truck was brought on when a piece of a turbine fan blade in the left engine snapped off. The break damaged the engine so badly that it exploded. The blast ripped off the front edge of the cowling and scattered the pieces over miles of Pennsylvania. … [T]orn pieces of the plane took chunks out of the wing and tail, ripped a panel out underneath the wing, and poked a hole in the hydraulic lines around the engine.”

Moreover, fuel was flowing out of the left fuel tank, and a piece of debris had hit the window at row 14, breaking it. The change in pressurization caused the pilots to gasp for breath, and they tried furiously to combat the craft’s constant shuddering and turbulence. It felt like “flying through an asteroid belt, hitting most of the rocks as they went,” Shults writes.

As the plane continued to roll, Shults and Ellisor barely had time to get their oxygen masks on. They labored to keep the aircraft from lurching out of control. Shults realized she would have to “work with the plane and not against it.” This meant the aircraft would have to descend, which, in this case, felt like it was dropping out of the sky. She needed to find a safe place to land before time ran out, and Philadelphia became the location of choice. Hope was in sight, but danger still lurked. Landing the damaged airliner could be done, but it would not be easy.

Shults made a cabin announcement: “We are not going down. We are going to Philly.” Her message was heard by many of the passengers and the crew, and it filled their hearts with hope. While the pilots continued to steer the plane, the flight crew strove mightily to reassure, calm, and assist the passengers. Even while colliding against the seats and dodging the flying debris, the crewmembers shouted: “We’re going to be okay! We’re going to Philly!”

Amid the continued turbulence, flight attendant Rachel Fernheimer arrived at row 14 and discovered that passenger Jennifer Riordan’s upper body had been sucked out the window. Debris from the engine explosion had broken the window, and now the only thing keeping Riordan inside the plane was her seatbelt. Several passengers strained tirelessly to pull her back inside, but to no avail. Another flight attendant alerted the pilots to the dire situation. At this point, Shults had retaken the controls, because it is the captain’s responsibility to land a plane in times of emergency. She slowed the aircraft to reduce air flow outside, and Riordan could now be pulled back in; the passenger was in bad shape, however, and a retired nurse on board began performing CPR.

Though the situation was exceedingly stressful, Shults remained calm and composed, alerting air traffic control of the situation: “We have part of the aircraft missing, so we’re going to need to slow down a bit. … [C]ould you have medical meet us there on the runway as well? We’ve got injured passengers.”

Of course Shults knew landing the plane would be difficult anyway, but with only one functioning engine and a damaged wing, speed and power would be an issue. Keeping the plane level was yet another concern. And as Shults approached the runway, yet another problem arose: She needed to make one last right turn to line up with the airport runway, but the plane would not turn. For a brief moment, time seemed to stop — and then Shults said: “Heavenly Father?” (These words can be heard on the cockpit recorders.) The next part she prayed silently: “What am I forgetting?”

Even in this nerve-racking and terrifying situation, Shults did not panic. Instead, she called on her Heavenly Father. She knew the wings of the aircraft were in the almighty hands of Jesus. He would cover the wings of the plane beneath His own wings! And that is surely what happened, because after her short prayer, she knew what to do and was able to turn the plane in the right direction. As Shults got closer to landing, the flight attendants shouted in unison to the passengers: “Heads down! Stay down! Brace! Brace! Brace!”

At 11:23 a.m. the plane landed safely. Twenty minutes had passed since the explosion. It was likely the longest 20 minutes ever in the life of every single person aboard that plane. In great relief, Shults breathed out: “Thank you, Lord. Thank you, thank you Lord,” as the plane taxied on the runway.

After all the safety checks were completed, Shults went to check on the passengers. She was surprised to find that they were not panicked, but instead calm, collected, and grateful. Making an enthusiastic announcement over the PA system, she declared: “God is good, and we are on the ground.” Exiting the plane, she thanked God for His protection and guidance. Afterward, her pulse was taken by an EMT, who was shocked to discover it wasn’t elevated.

Shults had this to say: “I’m as human as the next person. I believe my calm voice and pulse rate that day were the product of more than my training and demeanor. They didn’t magically appear in a sudden moment of need. They’d developed over years, nurtured through each life experience as well as through my faith and confidence in God’s goodness. I believe the Creator put nerves of steel in so many people on Flight 1380 that day.”

But, most sadly, though the plane landed safely, passenger Riordan would later die of her injuries. Her death would be mourned by everyone aboard the flight. Shults duly notes how hard it is to be both happy and sad at the same time: happiness for the safe landing, but sadness for the loss of a passenger’s life.

Unforgettable as Shults’ story may be, it is evident that Jesus had prepared her for “such a time as this.” As one of the U.S. Navy’s first female fighter pilots, she had developed the skills and determination needed to tackle difficult situations. Of course, she and her co-pilot did not fly that aircraft alone. In fact, before that plane ever took flight, Shults’ Savior already had His almighty arms about her and all the passengers and crew. Amid all the turbulence and confusion, Shults called out to the Lord, who answered right on time.

In an interview on The 700 Club, Shults shares how she was able to stay calm in the middle of chaos: “I remember thinking, good news, bad news, and the bad news was that I didn’t think everything would stay on the aircraft for us to get it to the ground. And that kind of led me to the mental cliff of what if which would be that this would be the day that I meet my maker. And that’s when I stopped. The rush stopped and I just had a calm because I realized I wouldn’t be meeting a stranger. I meet with him every day. And so that is where I stepped away with a calm in my heart that I think was reflected in my voice, but also in just being able to think through the many decisions that Darren and I needed to make.”

This story reminds me of that beautiful owl that soared out of the tree with its mighty wings outspread. When I called to the owl, I wasn’t expecting it to respond. And just that way, my own faith, I realize, can fluctuate from one day to another: Sometimes I pray to Jesus with big requests that I don’t expect to be answered; on other occasions, I believe my prayer is too small and insignificant. Whatever the prayer request might be, I don’t always expect a response. But when I consider Shults’ experience, I’m aware that she was confident that her Heavenly Father would respond. The morning of the flight, she had spent time with Jesus, praying that He would guide her airmanship and judgment. She set herself up for success by handing her flight over to Him. When trouble came, she reacted in faith instead of fear. She didn’t doubt that Jesus would answer her very big request. It gave her those nerves of steel she needed to land the plane safely, even with a damaged wing and engine.

As we face the uncertainties of this world, it’s important that we learn to expect an answer from our Savior. When we pray, we should do so optimistically. In the same way as that owl burst suddenly out of the tree, we can anticipate something awesome — even an answer that knocks us off our feet. As Shults notes, we can have every confidence in the goodness of God, and His goodness will give us calmness and, most of all, hope.

In this life, we will face busted engines and shattered wings. But the Savior’s own wings of steel bring us renewed hope. I can still feel the wind from the owl’s wings as it rushed by. I was fearful for a moment, but then I was reminded of Psalm 91:4 which declares: … under his wings you will find refuge.

Will I be calling out to any more owls from this point forward? I’m not so sure about that! But one thing is certain: I am going to set myself up for success by anticipating God’s goodness. When tough situations drop on my doorstep, I’ll expect Jesus to respond. Maybe it won’t happen as quickly as the flight of the owl, but it will definitely happen.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for listening to our prayers. We are confident that You will respond, even if we are on a sinking ship or inside a crashing plane.

So much looking forward to the prophecy of what God is going to do in September that was given by Gina Gohlston !!! Her new book about all this is called Carry On. Our super wonderful miracles ofGod are coming soon and our country will be as it was in the beginning when God miraculously acted to create The USA. There’s no way this country could have come into existence without God’s leading and power. For the truth about the beginning history of our nation, see wall builders.com

Beautiful faithful courage.
I’m one of 3 making up a PAC. I’m president of record. Its focus is on upholding and bringing back the vision of Founding Fathers to our county in Oregon. We lost our first campaign for 3 school board postions. We made a couple of mistakes with donations and funding. Thankfully corrected. We’ve learned in this process that we must be hyper-vigilant. One of our donor made a mistake in approving its donation to us. And is learning a harsher lesson with its donors. We have learned there are those within
that conservative group who have no problem causing division and harm. I’m also a member of that organization. We need mercy, grace and forgiveness. The coming election campaign season will be harsh. Pray for the Lord’s covering of discernment, wisdom and grace as we reach out. I need His shelter and love. Thank you.

It is written that God inhabits the praises of His people!
Because of this, I was struck by Tammie Jo Shults’ habits of not only praying over the application of what He is saying to her in today’s Bible reading, but also of her texting pertinent portions of this reading of His Word to those she loves and is praying for!
What a really wonderful way to enlarge His presence and His kingdom here on earth! To God, alone, be the glory!
As it is written in 2 Chr 20:22, it was only when God’s people began to sing and to praise that He set ambushes against their enemies, and they were defeated.

Someone needs to contact Angel Studios about making a movie of this! It’s similar to the hit movie “Scully” – another true story but one that doesn’t give nearly as much glory to God as this one!!! My OMS missionary grandparents experienced something very similar just before Pearl Harbor, while their small ferry navigated the mined waters near Hong Kong harbor. They were returning from dropping my mama off at a small boarding school for MKs (missionary kids) on Cheung Chau Island (just off the mainland coast and about 1/2 hour from the docks at Kowloon.) Suddenly, there were loud cries of terror from the Chinese passengers and crew. A live mine had broken loose in the rough waters and was furiously bobbing straight toward the small ferry. Grandpa, Grandma & Uncle Harold knelt in prayer. Grandma had never learned to swim, so Grandpa told his 9-yr-old son, a strong swimmer, that he’d be on his own if they were thrown into the sea because he had to save Grandma. They prayed Ps. 91…and waited…and waited for the explosion that never happened. The mine “mysteriously” disappeared only feet from the side of the boat, went UNDER the boat, and reappeared on the other side, bobbing farther and farther away. THE SAFEST PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE IS IN GOD’S HANDS!!!

Angela, thank you for that great account of faith. I really needed to read that this morning. It actually brought tears to my eyes.. I think because of encountering this story of courage and bravery in the face of such great uncertainty.. that was met by our Lord’s care and provision. I used to write song lyrics a long time ago-, after my daily times in the word-,and sometimes it would be exact words from the Bible- and sometimes I would extrapolate and interpret meaning- and write my own.. but I never developed the ability to take daily life situations as amazing as they might have been- or as mundane as they can be- and turn them into stories like this.. I often relied on the pain created by life and also unfortunately by Church situations-,to fuel the content of what I was writing.. I only say that in reporting what actually happened- not as a condemnation of the church.
Lord thank you for Angela Rodriguez writing ability-,and the Glorious events that you allowed her to experience in nature- and in her life, so she can bring us these stories-,and thank you for this Pilots faith and your leading of her life- to be a conduit through which we could experience your presence in saving people’s lives- and showing yourself to be the God that you say you are. I also lift up the family of the passenger that was lost.. that their hearts could be healed and restored and their family could be led in that situation to know your son Jesus as Savior.
In Jesus mighty name, Amen

If all of us shared our answered prayers, I believe all the books in the world could not hold them.

First of all most of us are not aware of all the times God has answered. Then some answers are not what we wanted or prayed. I believe that as our relationship with God matures we better understand what God means with his answers and we can rejoice and be blessed with the abundant life Jesus promises.

Early in 1991, shortly before Eastern Airlines went out of business, a friend and I boarded a flight from Newark, NJ to Ft. Myers, Florida, shortly after noon, on the way to meet my husband. We were at about 4,000 ft. in ascent and suddenly a message from the pilot to the flight attendants was accompanied by a steep nosedive, a violent pitch to the left, another nosedive and another pitch and my life literally flashed before me, in little vignettes. I said to my friend, “We are not going to make it.” Then, I began praying out loud, “Lord, will you help this pilot get control of this plane.” The strange thing was, there was not a sound from the few passengers on board and my prayer was heard by all. Almost instantenously, the dive began to lessen, the pitch became less, and gradually the plane began to climb again and we completed the flight safely. I have always known,
“The Lord answered my prayer that day.” My late friend, Laurette Connelly, told the story many times in her bible study groups to whom she spoke. (The pilots gave no explanation as to what happened, but I later read Traffic control had phantom reports on the radar screen of approaching aircraft. I have no idea if that was our problem or not, but Thank you Lord, for being a mighty God who steps in and, in mercy, overpowers the natural when your children call upon you!

This article was a wonderful and encouraging testimony to read, as well as Joan’s story-thank you Lord for these testimonies!

On Good Friday of 1994 I was taking my usual walk around my then neighborhood. It was a rural residential area in Western New York State. This one particular house that I would walk past had a Doberman Pincher. On this particular day, I had already passed the house on my walk, and was now coming back home, and so had to walk past it again. The dog was loose in its yard with no owners in sight. I don’t recall if I had seen it on my way up, I don’t think so, but it was certainly outside on my way back! It saw me coming and started running right for me-there was really nowhere for me to go run to quickly, and so I just called out “Help me, God”! The dog was nearly right up to the front of myself when after I prayed this aloud, he turned around for no reason and ran back to the front door of his house, jumping up and scratching on the door to get into his house, acting very frightened.
After watching him run back to his porch and doing that, I just quickly went on my way home, but did notice that the neighbor man a little bit further down from this house (I didn’t know him) sat on his porch and just watched the whole thing staring after me, seeming a bit quietly stunned. I thanked the Lord for protection I’m sure all the way home! I know that God sent an Angel to scare that dog away, or God did something else to make it be afraid and go back home. But I do think it was an angel standing behind me. I have never forgotten that day and always thanked God for it-I could’ve been killed as it could’ve lunged for my neck or maybe I would have been disfigured. My family and I have many other stories like this. Jesus is always faithful!

I had a similar occurence-,in castaic, California, between 2011 and 2013. I was walking down the street where I was living-, and I saw a neighbor that I knew- with her Doberman that was very muscular-,that I knew was a rescue dog-,and as she walked by me- the dog escaped from her enough..to lunge at me-,and it did manage to just get the tip of its teeth into my knee cap- and that was painful, but the owner who was a very athletic lady- was in her mode of exercising her Authority as a liberated woman-,that she displayed in Daily walks in athletic gear that she wore-,which was really quite a pronounced event every day- that was obvious, and so this lent itself to her being able to control the dog- but I think that the Lord was actually helping me out there- because the dogscteeth were actually in contact with me-,and could have torn my kneecap out on a moment’s notice- but she was able to stand the dog down.
I did have some misgivings that it even had to happen at all- but I have learned to be grateful for what the Lord provided in that time since-, then. subsequent to that event-, I moved out of that area in about the next year-,as the course of that experience in that community. had degraded for me. It was very frightening and the roommate at that time-, who was a very Pro dog person.. did not believe me- and basically called me a liar. That dog’s name was clyde, and it was well known, as it turned out-,amongst those who frequented the local animal shelter-,that were concerned about animal.
I was also questioned by one of the other neighbors as to the veracity of my story.. A mormon woman that said that the dog interacted and played with people on the street.. so maybe there was a spirit attending me-, from the Brokenness in my childhood- when I was accosted at the age of 3 years old by the biological mother that God assigned to me-,it may have brought a curse upon me.. I don’t know-,but my whole life has been tainted by it.
Lord thank you that you have said you will never leave us nor forsake us- and you stand by us-,as we struggle and Endeavor to flex our spiritual muscles-, to continue to seek you-,and not grow weary in waiting on you- for your timing in our lives- as you move in your way, that we do not always understand. But we know that you love us-, and I for one am learning to be thankful in many different areas for the things you provide- your Holiness, your mercy, your peace, your provision, your goodness, your kindness, and your healing-, amongst some of them.
Thank you Lord, in the mighty name of Jesus-, Amen

Holly, I had something similar happen to me years ago. In my case it was two Dobermans. They both raced toward me going full speed. I had already prayed Psalm 91 before I left on my walk that day, but I called out to Jesus again when I saw the dogs coming over. Next thing I know, a car stopped and in that way became an obstacle between the dogs and myself (they had been trying to cross the road at the time). The dogs became confused and wouldn’t cross the road. Next I heard someone whistle and those dogs changed course. Maybe it was their owner? Either way, they left me alone. I was relieved! Thanks for sharing your experience and for reading. So amazing how the Lord gave his angels charge over you that day!

Thank you for the reminder that we should never stop praying and expecting miracles. God will answer our prayers, save our nation, and bless us if we trust Him, ask His forgiveness, pray without ceasing, and believe His word. We must boldly come before His thrown and make a choice this day that we will serve Him and praise Him and thank Him in advance for answering our prayers. Oh, what a mighty God we serve!

I was 19 and in college. I wanted to be a writer and used to go hiking into the forest to find a quiet place to sit and write. On this day, I had followed the small pebble white stone path down around and away from the parking lot as usual. I stopped to stare at the various shades of green foilage in the trees before taking the trail down into the forest. I thought, God has created thousands of greens, so many I can’t see them all. Then I heard a voice, a real voice behind me. It said, “Joan, if you go down there, you will not come out alive.” I turned around quickly, but there was no one there. I shook the voice off, thinking, it wasn’t real. It couldn’t have been; there was no one else there. I started down the path, but only had taken one step when the voice repeated itself. This time more commanding, more sure. “Joan, if you go down there, you will not come out alive.” This time I listened. It was a real voice. I somehow knew it. I started back up the long, winding loose white gravel towards the parking lot. I had gotten to the first bend when a dark figure swooped past me from the rise of shubbery on my left. It blocked the pathway back up to the parking lot. It was a man dressed in a black rain coat and a black hat. I stood staring at him, but only for a second as I seemed to be guided to pick up a handful of loosed stones in my fist and held it out in a warning that I would hurl them at him if he dared come towards me. I was able to run by him and up the hill to safety. He only stood looking at me as if past me and at something behind me. It seemed he couldn’t make a move at all.
There was a young couple and I ran up to them and told them what had just taken place. They suggested I go to a phone booth and call the police. I did and a short while later, two detectives came to the forest entrance. I showed them where the guy had jumped down on me from the enbankment. When they went up the ledge and into the bushes they found his foot prints in the soil where he had stood watching me and waiting to follow me down when I had gotten deeper into the forest.
That voice was the clearest I have ever heard as if it had no timbre to it. God watched over me, called me by name, and gave me the courage to pick those stones up and threaten my would be attacker with them. I was not afraid at all. Looking back on it now, fifty years later, I am astounded by that fact. (For the record, that is the only time in my nearly 70 years that I heard a voice when no one was there.) His promises in psalm 91 are true. Thank you for all the days you have given me.

I can relate to what you said. I live in front of a lake and love seeing birds flying like I’d like to or fishing. They like to go in circles like we sometimes do. I find watching them I fly with them. Sometimes I wonder why God didn’t give us wings. We wouldn’t have any pollution. I think God sends us birds to remind us that some day we too will fly to and with Him really free!

Adrian, I do the same thing when I see the birds flying. I imagine flying to heaven with Jesus! All God’s creatures are so beautiful and remind us of his love for us. Thank you for reading! May the Lord bless you!

Thank you for this wonderful testimony. Oh God is faithful and our father watches over all of us. I may not ever be in a plane that’s going to crash but I can understand spiritually all the things that they went through in that 20 minutes and Jesus has been faithful to me as well. Amen.

Please join me here and now as you read this, asking for divine increase in work places, manufacturing facilities, a 5-loaves-2-fish increase. And grant divine appointments for those who with their faith can help overcome difficulties in productive work everywhere. Grant I can be part of that miraculous manifestation.

I imitated a pair of Great Horned Owls that had a nest near my home and they responded. They believed an intruder was in their territory and attacked! Thank you Lord that my dog was next to me and he lunged at the owl causing it to stop it’s attack.

I no longer imitate the owls but it sure is tempting!

Wow! I’ve never seen a Great Horned Owl up close, but I”ll bet that was unforgettable! I think I better leave the hooting to the owls from now on…ha ha! Thanks for sharing.

What an amazing testimony of God’s unfailing love and faithfulness to us. 1 John 5:because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith!!!
