I Prayed have prayed
Father, we praise You for decreeing to win great triumphs through the prayers of Your people. May we who share Elijah’s lowly humanity possess also Elijah’s triumphant faith.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

There is something from my life that I would like to share with you. Most of my ministry has been dedicated to mobilizing prayer for revival and spiritual awakening. During the late 1980s and the 1990s, while powerful prayer movements were sweeping through the U.S., prayer mobilization was a very public ministry. At the height of this movement in the upper Midwest, I had two radio programs; published an annual prayer guide; led concerts of prayer and marches for Jesus with more than 10,000 people; spoke at conferences; facilitated pastoral prayer summits; ran a prayer coordinators’ network; and led several prayer coalitions. I don’t say any of this to brag — I do it only to paint a contrast.

Pray for your fellow intercessor.

You see, my life today is no longer that way. Why not? Because back then, something very vital was missing: I was so busy organizing prayer that I could not sit still long enough to actually pray. This gnawed at my insides as I observed the intercessors who were all around me — people accustomed to spending hours in the presence of God, without interruption or distraction. You could tell from the look in their eyes, from the way they spoke, and from the inner beauty of their souls that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and were hearing from God.

I grew jealous.

“Lord, make me an intercessor,” I pleaded — not realizing how much inner work would have to be done in me to accomplish that. Years of stripping away the barriers to intimacy with God, of having my faith tested, and of developing a spirit willing to listen patiently and quietly have followed that prayer. I had to learn to see the world through the eyes of an intercessor, rather than those of a driven doer who tended to convert everything into a task list. And most of all, I had to come to a place where I would gladly surrender the limelight and willingly exchange my place at the center of all that activity for a ministry that was largely hidden from view.

When I turned 60, the Lord spoke to me as I contemplated what this new decade of my life might entail in terms of spiritual life and ministry. “I am leading you into a ministry of the unseen,” He said. “You prayed two decades ago that I make you an intercessor. I have been developing that in you. You are ready.”

He closed the doors to most public ministry and led me instead down the paths of prayer and spiritual warfare, paths that have tested and deepened my faith, sharpened my hearing, and increased my knowledge of the One Who sees in secret, rewards in secret, and ordains to win His battles through the prayers of His people.

I am sharing this because I want you to be encouraged. You may be hidden from the eyes of many. Pastors, church leaders, and members of the congregation may not understand you. But you are indispensable in God’s eyes.

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable … (1 Corinthians 12:21–22).

The high-visibility people — the speakers, the teachers, the prophets, the worship leaders — these are most often deemed the “strongest.” I certainly thought so. Being an “up-front leader” known by many became the dominant part of my identity, more so than just being a son of the Father. By contrast, the people with the hidden ministries, often overlooked, frequently misunderstood, and rarely appreciated, are subconsciously seen as the “weaker” parts of the body.

But if that is you, then know this: You are indispensable. You are a vessel of greater honor. You are privileged. God said so in His word.

Your prayers matter. They matter so much that He has chosen by means of them to advance His kingdom worldwide and to defeat Satan’s attempts to kill and destroy.

You are not indispensable because God needs you — He does not. No, He chose to make you an indispensable part of His work. The words of any evangelist will have no power without your prayers. Without your sustained pleading, no church planter will see the fruit of his or her labors. Revivals do not happen apart from fervent prayer. In short, nothing happens in the global work of God without focused, effective intercession.

I believe that all this is in fact an overlooked application of the passage that exhorts: … do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:4). The phrase in everything by prayer and supplication is the lifeblood of the Great Commission in all its various facets, from crusade evangelism to medical missions and everything in between.

All believers are called to pray and to make daily prayer central to the way they live. But intercessors have a specific calling on their lives: While all believers are in the Lord’s army, because we are indeed at war, intercessors are the special forces — trained and equipped to break down enemy strongholds and to push open doors for the gospel in ways that few really understand.

Missionary C. Peter Wagner used to say that intercessors would be given a place of honor in the inner circle around God’s throne once His kingdom is fully established. Of course, the Bible does not explicitly say that anywhere, but I nonetheless think he may be right — and not because I happen to be one, but because greater honor is always given to the hidden people in the Body of Christ!

Did the waning days of 2022 find you weary, discouraged, and battle-fatigued in some way? Does 2023 look like just another mountain to climb, with unpredictable events and sudden disasters looming and demanding urgent prayer?

Be strong and courageous! He calls you and equips you. In His eyes, you are indispensable and honored. “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:6). So prepare your heart to receive great rewards as you seek Him in secret!

Last, but not least, let me recommend a decades-old practice I have engaged in: Spend a day sometime at the turn of the year in listening prayer, and ask the Lord: “What do you want for me and from me this coming year?” Ask Him for a theme verse that will declare His intentions for you and let that be your source of encouragement and guidance for the new year.

See yourself through the eyes of your Father: Hidden. Indispensable. Honored. And let His approving eyes compel you to reach new heights in the power of prayer!

Father, thank You for the value and honor You bestow on each member of Christ’s Body, including the hidden parts. May we, Your appointed intercessors, receive a double dose of grace and love as the new year begins. May we receive fresh impetus, new vision, new assignments, and greater faith as we enter the new year. Sharpen our ears so that we might hear what the Holy Spirit says to us. Work Your energy in us so that we might pray according to Your will and pleasure. Give us steadfastness, so that we might never give up in our intercessions. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Has God begun speaking to you anew as an intercessor? Share below and bless other intercessors!

My Faith is very big. I believe God for what msn calls impossible, but He indicated that the impossible is to be my reality. Is He NOT A GOD OF MIRACLES. Secret time alone with Him id required to maintain His reality in my life.

This was a word of blessing and encouragement for me. I cannot tell you how many times I said to the Lord, why am I doing this. One time the Lord had me go upstairs to my place of prayer and I began to intercede for a broken marriage. I did not no the couple, but they had been divorced. I found out later on the couple had a restored marriage . I guess God had a different plan for my life that day and we never do know, but obedience is what pleases Him and brings fruit. I pray the Spirit of the Lord will be lifted in the hearts of any who feel alone or even that what they do in a secret place is of eternal value and He asks us to participate. Praise His Holy Name.

I so related to your article as I, too, organize prayer for our church group, Sometimes, I spend more time organizing and updating folks on prayer than I do actually praying. Your article inspired me to do more praying and I loved what you said about starting off the year asking God “what He wants for me and from me in this coming year” and also having a verse to confirm that.

I plan to do just that. Thanks for all the encouragement.

This is a wonderful reminder that intercessory prayer is greatly needed and that God sees our efforts. This year our theme is to intercede for the upcoming generations. They have been brought up with so much deception poured into them on most every subject. Let us storm heavens gates for these young people and watch what God does for them in our nation and beyond! Thanks so much for your encouragement!!

Thank you so very much for your article! It is truly a gift. I often feel that I should be doing so much more for God’s Kingdom; and yet, at present, I am doing what I can but still feel it is not enough. You have helped me realize that God needs me where I am at this time. Thank you! Be blessed in all you do.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience; it is so encouraging as I have felt despair theses past few days. You reminded me to go and seek My Father’s face and listen for His voice. Gods best to His intercessors. And those who war with Him for our country

Thank you, Remco. I will take your words to heart, especially to set aside time here at the turn of the year to ask God what He wants to do for me, in me and through me in 2023. And to ask for a theme verse for the year.

Thank you for this article. At 79, I have no car and spend much time in my apartment because I cannot just run out and jump in my car at the slightest whim. I realized that this gives me time to pray that I would not have otherwise! I know I need to grow as an intercessor and as I read this article, I know I am not too old to do this!

Last night before I read your article the LORD gave me first a word, Ponder and then this verse for 2023: “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you have been called”. 1st Tim.6:12. I have always “considered myself” a prayer warrior…. I am in my 80th year and no longer “out there” in ministry. After reading your article, which has greatly touched my heart, mind and soul, I realize what our LORD is calling me to for these latter years of my life. To Fight/Strive for His will to be done in the arena that counts the Most…the spiritual one! THANK YOU and the LORD bless you, keep you, continually guide you and smile on you, His child!

What words of Encouragement, Thank-you! Your sharing of being touched at the age of 60, when you were convicted of needing a change in your prayer life amongst a successful ministry focused on prayer, really encouraged me. I feel the Lord’s patience has molded me slowly (due to my fighting sinful nature) all these years and, at times I’m frustrated in myself why it has taken/ takes me so long! So Thank-you! The Holy Spirit through your words has blessed me with encouragement. God is so patient and kind, an ever present help in time of need.

Praise the Lord- this article has came to me from Him at no better time. I have had a life of many traumas and tragedies and hav e only wanted to be out in the world helping because I’ve experienced so much I thought I had much to offer. He has never allowed that. I believe He has put “Anna” on my heart to follow. I have fought it from time to time. I see with these words written that He wants to use me as an intercessor because I strongly I have the compassion to pray because of what I’ve been through-I would miss the details by not being hidden. Thank you for your article! He is using it!

As I read this I wept because this past year has been an incredible struggle but also an incredible blessing. I know and have known from the beginning (42 yrs) that my main calling has been an intercessor. I have never found much recognition or acceptance from my pastors which can feel hurtful. As I read this I began to realize even more so that that this calling is a bit of a lonely calling. A hidden calling that usually is not recognized but by other intercessors unfortunately. My prayer is that this year pastors would begin to see how important this part of their ministry is. Not so I or we can be “recognized “ publicly but to be recognized as a very Huge part of their desire to see revival. Respect and honor for each part of Christ is important in order for the whole body to be healthy. Yes it is hidden but should not be shunned or overlooked. If you are looking for a move of God encourage your intercessors and make room for them. The hard part is finding true intercessors to bond with. It is unfortunate that most of my connections are on social media rather than my own church or city. I have found some to be “by invitation only” type. No thank you. You may be blocking a called one who needs instruction and encouragement. My hearts cry is to find hungry hearts and lead them into his presence and into a place of warfare intercession. I had a prophecy many yrs ago that has stayed with me. They said they say me as Joan of Arc picking up the sword and leading into battle. I haven’t found too many willing to go or even a leader who trusts me. They always seem intimidated by someone else’s anointing unfortunately. But I am trying to stay supportive and submissive to my pastors as they grow and learn that they can trust me. How frustrating and sometimes hurtful this is, but while reading this article I was encouraged. Knowing that God is working patience and purity in me and He has not forgotten His Words to me. Thank you so much for sharing this me as it has given me a new light and hope to PRESS ON. Amen

Yes, Patricia! I am going through the same thing- no connection with other intercessors in my church and feeling a bit misunderstood. If I talk about what God is doing or want to talk about Him at all because of the joy of His presence that overflows, I see eyes glaze over. But I’m determined to stay on this path. Thank you for your reply to this article!

Lord, thank You for Your words to me through this writing by Remco. I was brought to tears. You touched me through these words: Your prayers matter. God chose intercessors to be an indispensable part of His work. Intercessors are special forces. Pray in the secret place (Mt. 6:6). Receive a double dose of grace ad love, fresh impetus, new vision, new assignments, greater faith. Hear what Holy Spirit says. Grant energy to pray according to Your will and pleasure. Grant steadfastness.
And, so, Father, I agree in prayer with all these words of encouragement, strength and energy and steadfastness. Lord, I wait upon You for that “word for the year, the verse(s) for this year, for Your instructions. Your word is a lamp unto my feet. All glory to Your Name. Amen.

I pray for the forerunners. Those God has chosen to be the frontline brothers & sisters who will experience persecution feeling humbled & honored & full of joy. Those who will teach others by their example. If you have been called please know that God has raised up intercessors to cover you in prayer round the clock. You may never meet them on this side of Heaven but one day it will be a joyous reunion face to face.

I have felt God put upon my heart to invest more time in prayer and intercession. So today He sent your message and my verse popped out Matt 6:6 which I promptly wrote down to ponder on today. Then your next paragraph spelled out what God was saying to me – Listen, ask for direction and receive a verse to lead my life.
What an awesome God who answers our prayers before we ask. He continues to surprise me with answers before I know the questions.
