The economy has always been one of the most immediate governmental concerns in America, and for good reason. Finances bleed into nearly every facet of national well-being. Military capability, agricultural security, and political integrity all stem from and into the management of the American budget. In today’s world, the pervasive influence of the economy has become a subject of increasingly heated discourse. The last elections proved that voters from across the board have identified economic mismanagement and increasing inflation as points of capital concern for the incumbent president. In light of this, President Trump has made it a primary mission to reinvigorate the economy and lessen the rampant inflation. This mission is said to be what motivated him to nominate the new Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent.

A Career in Money Management

Born in South Carolina, Bessent is the oldest of three children raised in a French Huguenot family. He attended Yale University in 1984, already showing an interest in politics by earning himself a bachelor’s degree in political science. During his days at Yale, he also foreshadowed his future in both politics and economics by serving as treasurer for the class of ’84. Along with his educational exploits, Bessent was an editor for The Yale Daily News, assistant to the director of athletics, chairman of the 1984 Yale Alumni Fund, and president of the Wolf’s Head Society. Shortly after graduation, Bessent interned and gained experience working with multiple investment organizations before joining Soros Fund Management in 1991. He resigned from SFM in 2000 and founded his own hedge fund. During this time Bessent also served as an adjunct professor of economic history at his alma mater. After several years, he eventually returned to work for George Soros again in 2011. In 2015, he again left SFM and founded another firm called Key Square Group. Bessent has since announced that he will cease ties with this group now that he is Treasury Secretary. Bessent is the first openly homosexual treasury secretary, which makes him the highest ranking openly homosexual person in America’s history. He resides in Washington, D.C. and Charleston, South Carolina with his male partner and two children.

Bessent’s Plans with Trump

Evidently, much of Secretary Bessent’s professional career has been left-leaning. From his education at Yale, to his work with prominent Democrat lobbyist George Soros, Bessent could be considered an unlikely pick from President Trump. But Bessent’s resume is undeniable. With decades of experience in international investment management under his belt, it’s understandable why a pragmatic, business-minded president would want someone like Scott Bessent in his cabinet to manage the national budget. But more than that, Bessent has also shown to be a vocal supporter of Trump’s financial policies, especially his plans on tariffs. This is likely why Trump had decided to choose him. In a recent speech at the Economic Club of New York, Bessent laid out “three pillars” for America’s financial future:

“First, I will address a critical aspect of our domestic economic agenda, responsibly deregulating the financial sector to accelerate what I call the re-privatization of the economy.

Second, maybe some of you have an interest in this—President Trump’s tariff policies have begun the process of reorienting our international economic relations. I’ll review our broader international economic policy goals from a first principles basis and discuss how tariffs fit into the picture.

Lastly, economic security and national security are inseparable. At Treasury, our unique financial tools are a critical component of U.S. foreign policy. I’ll address how we are updating those tools and give the first real-time example here today.” (Read Here)

These “pillars” contain some tall tasks. As treasury secretary, Bessent will have to hold the line on Trump’s new tariff policies, streamline financial regulation across the board, empower America’s small community banks, stimulate job growth, defend against the prevalence of cheap goods, strategically utilize regulations and sanctions in international affairs, and work to cut needless government spending overall.

• That Bessent will lean on Biblical understanding.
• That all works of Satan be rendered null.
• That fear and trepidation never prevents anyone, be it Trump or Bessent, from doing the right thing.
• That all things that are not of God be removed and destroyed in America’s financial system.
• That the Treasury comes to understand the ways of God over the ways of the world.
