Yes, the fraud and deceit is breath taking. And in the midst of all this waste, which amounts to incomprehensible billions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars, the government is poised to start garnishing elderly and disabled American’s Social Security payments for defaulted student loan payments, beginning in January 2026. This appears to be tragically misguided in light of the Minnesota child care and HUD rental assistance scandals, not to mention countless others.

Consider that a third of student loan borrowers 50 or older, whose offsets lasted 5 years or longer had their loan balances INCREASE. This is, no doubt, because more than 70% of the loan repayments collected through Social Security offsets were applied FIRST to fees and interest. [This data is taken from, and offered in support of, a bill introduced by several Democrat legislators recently to halt Social Security garnishments.]

I’m praying God will have mercy on the many poor elderly who are struggling to get by on their monthly Social Security, and who are now facing a reduction of those payments because of these upcoming garnishments.

I’m praying God will inspire the government to pause these garnishments long enough to implement a needs-based analysis of each recipient’s ability to pay.

I’m praying God will inspire those in power to allow alternative methods of paying off the loans, such as negotiated settlements for less than the face amount of the loans because sometimes family members are willing and able to step in with lump sums to help their relative, but as it stands now, the negotiated settlement formula is very rigid and generally will only write the balance down to roughly 90% of the original loan with some accommodation for interest and fees sometimes.

Above all, I’m praying for God’s mercy and justice to prevail. He has creative ideas, and I pray He will impart them to those in power and move on them to do something to help protect the vulnerable elderly and disabled.
