Have you been wondering why you should intercede for people you don’t like? Have you been at a loss for words for HOW on earth to pray for people whom hate God and hate everything He stands for?
If so, I want to encourage you today with the Word of God—and equip you to pray in power even for people you don’t like.
First, why should you pray for people you don’t like?
This is the easiest question we address today: we pray for people we don’t like because Jesus commanded that we should. For example, in Matthew 5:43-48, Jesus told us:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
The Word of God is clear that we should pray for people we don’t like—even for people who persecute us. But why? WHY would the Lord command us to do such a thing?
The answer is twofold:
- According to Matthew 5:43-48, obeying God in this area makes us like Him. After all, each and every one of us were God’s enemies before we gave our lives to Jesus. Yet, God in His mercy forgave us. We deserved to die in our sins, but Jesus gave His own life for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8); while we were still the enemies of God.
- We are to pray for people we don’t like because our prayers open the door on the earth for God to move.
Psalm 115:16 tells us: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; but the earth He has given to the children of men.”
This means that the Lord has delegated stewardship of the earth to us. Jesus has ultimate authority, but He has made us His “middle-managers,” if you will. And since He has delegated stewardship over the earth to us, placing us in authority over it, He needs us to pray and ask Him to move in order for Him to have permission to move on the earth. This is why your prayers are so important, even when you’re praying for someone you don’t like.
But you don’t have to pray the same way for the ungodly as you do for the righteous—and that’s a big key to effective prayer.
When you’re praying for the righteous, you can and should pray for all the blessings to come into their lives that God promises to the righteous! After all, they meet the conditions! Anyone who is obeying God has the right by covenant to receive all of God’s blessings!
But people who are not obeying God do not meet the conditions to receive His blessings. For those people, therefore, we must pray differently. We pray:
- For them to be saved and give their lives to Jesus, for it is not God’s will that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
- We ask the Lord to change their hearts and make them aware of their need for Him.
- We ask Him to convict them of their sin; to show them Jesus, so they will know what righteousness looks like; and to convict them of judgment, showing them that there is no hope or future in their sin.
- We ask God to loose Heaven into their lives and that He would change their hearts so that such a blessing is even possible.
- We pray that the Lord would bind them and prevent them from doing evil.
John 16:7-11 says this:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”
Holy Spirit’s job on the earth is to convict the world—to convict both sinners and the righteous—of their sin; of what righteousness looks like and why they need to be righteous; and to convict them of judgment. Therefore, our prayers along these three points release Him and give Him permission to work in this way among the wicked.
Additionally, however, we also need to pray to bind evil. As an intercessor for the great nation of America, this means:
- We ask the Lord to give us righteous leaders.
- We ask the Lord to remove any leader who is not leading the country into the ways of God.
- We ask the Lord to restore the great Restrainer of evil—Holy Spirit Himself—into our governments at every level (including at the local level), so that evil will be restrained and prevented.
- We ask the Lord to compel our leaders to walk in the ways of God and speak the words of God, even if they have zero intention of doing so.
Remember the story of Balaam in Numbers 22? Balaam was paid by a wicked ruler to speak curses over Israel. However, the Angel of the Lord—whom the Bible indicates is the preincarnate Christ—came personally to stand against Balaam, saying: “Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me” (Numbers 22:32b). In this passage, someone who claimed to be from God was exposed by the Lord Himself as walking in perversity, and God Himself came to stand against him!
However, the story didn’t stop there. The next day, even though Balaam’s way was perverse, God placed His own words in Balaam’s mouth and he spoke a major blessing over the people of Israel—despite that fact that he had begun his journey and been paid to do harm to God’s people!
Wow! What a story!
We actually see scenarios repeated over and over like this in the New Testament. One after the other, pagan kings rise up in the nations around Israel—but God uses them to accomplish His own purposes toward Israel. Yes, sometimes those purposes are for discipline. Sometimes, however, God uses the pagan kings for the preservation of His people … and sometimes He converts them.
The ways of God are perfect, and they are past finding out.
This doesn’t mean we should ever agree with lies or injustice.
We should never turn a blind eye to evil. We should never “look the other way” and ignore anything that goes against the Word of God.
As it says in Isaiah 8:20: “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” We have to remember this: our convictions, prayers, and conversations must remain 100% aligned with the entirety of God’s inerrant, infallible Word—the Bible.
But it does mean that we must pray for our leaders, for our family and friends, and for everyone else—whether we like them or not.
We must ask the Lord to accomplish His purposes in them and through them. We must remember:
- That God loves sinners as much as He loves His children;
- That the heart of God breaks whenever He sees anyone caught up in sin; therefore, we must pray in sympathy with His heart so that His plans can come forth.
When we see things from God’s perspective, it suddenly becomes easier to pray that His Kingdom would come and His will would be done on earth—even in the lives of people we don’t like—just like His will is done in Heaven. When we are willing to admit that God can work even the plots of men out for the good of His people and His Kingdom, then it becomes easier to pray along those lines.
Again, the people we are praying for don’t have to have any intention of honoring God in order for God to use them. God is able to use people, nations, and kingdoms for His purposes even when the people are completely unaware that He is doing so.
So beloved, in these trying times, I encourage you: Don’t fall into sin by refusing to pray for those who hate you. Let’s respond rightly, in accordance with God’s Word, whether you are faced with a neighbor you don’t like, a friend who mistreats you, or a national situation or leader you’d rather not pray for.
Anything less is rebelling against God.
The truth is that we, as intercessors are not accountable for the actions of people for whom we pray. However, we are accountable for responding rightly, and for obeying God in personal holiness by yielding to His command to pray.
Therefore, beloved, if you are dealing with someone who hates you, please understand that God loves them too. Pray that righteousness and justice, which are the foundations of God’s throne, would be established in your life and in the lives of every person around you. Pray for every person and situation in sympathy with the heart of Jesus, that Jesus would no longer be grieved.
And as we pray, let’s believe God together that He really meant it when He said:
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

FINALLY this issue is explained to me in a way I understand! The idea of blessing one’s enemies not only disgusted me, but it was confusing, because why reward sin? Thank you, Jamie, for clarifying so beautifully for us that blessing our enemies means being Christlike, praying for the wicked to repent of their sin, for them to be saved, and then to do the right thing. We were all enemies of the cross at one time. God is both just and merciful.

Excellent article. I’ve tried to read it several times and was interrupted often but I saved it because Holy Spirit wants me to know better how to pray for those that oppose God’s ways and remind me that I said I’d pray and follow His leading.

It’s not that we hate people, we recognize they are held captive by the enemy! Praying deliverance, salvation and whatever the Lord reveals#
My prayer is that Biden and Harris would have a Saul/Paul moment while he was on the road to Damascus. It’s really hard to pray for leaders we don’t like, however Jesus commands us that we should. God has a plan amid this storm, may we trust Him. God’s will be done.
I pray from Acts 26:18: “Open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins & a place among those who are sanctified by by faith in Jesus.” God’s word is always more powerful than mine & I can be confident that I am lined up with his will if I pray his word. I’m asking God to make my heart line up with my head as I obey his directive to pray for my leaders. I figure this has as much to do with my own sanctification (no more self righteousness!! no more judging others!! no more relying on men more than God!)as the salvation of those I criticize.. Blind men can’t see & deaf men can’t hear–applies to my own blind & deaf areas as much those of others. Whittling away at my pride.
I am praying daily for the leaders of America. I pray Psalm 91 and other scripture as the Lord leads. When we pray GOD’S word we r praying His Will .
People like to quote 1 Tim. 2:1-2 which instructs people to pray for kings and leaders, however, most don’t read further down to v. 3-4. There Paul says to pray for their salvation and for them to come to the knowledge of the truth. People should be very careful praying for anything else or for these leaders’ demonic agenda. Listen closely to the Holy Spirit before praying for anything beyond their salvation.

If we are to be like Jesus and love Him we must obey Him, and pray for Him to give us willing, grateful and faithful hearts – Hearts like His own.
As Christians we’ve always known to pray for our enemies, but as time goes by it is truly getting much harder! Thanks for the biblical reminders that it is God’s will that we do, as difficult as it gets…we aren’t done yet!
One time in my past, I was alienated from God, as I was ignorant of the truth of personally receiving and professing Christ as my Savior. I was in a church, doing the motions, but God seemed far away and I was trying to work my way to heaven. That cannot be done, dear friends. It cost Christ Jesus much at Calvary for my soul–a sinner!! I am no longer my own. I owe Him every breath! Isn’t God precious to us, who have come to know Him as Lord and Savior? This article is very good. Christ prayed from the cross for His enemies and I am called to do the same. It is hard in the flesh…but our Lord will help us all to obey His teachings by the workings of the Holy Spirit to love our enemies. He also has given us the power of spiritual warfare and provided us His strong weapons in prayer as found in Ephesians 6 as we stand against the forces of evil in our day. The power of prayer changes things! I later learned my neighbor across the street had prayed for my salvation for years! Her testimony has borne fruit in me. How thankful I am!!! Lord, teach us and help us to pray according to Your will for our leaders and country.
Thank you for the above article. I have a salvation list that I pray for people daily. On that list is also people that have harm me, my family, my nation, Israel and others. I ask God for their salvation but I ask him to stop their evil ways. I ask that they might be taken down from their throne of pride and rebellion so that they might be humbled enough to receive Christ. I believe the best blessing would be to receive my JESUS. This also releases the bitterness in my heart. Thanks again for being such a blessing in my prayer time.
I have been guilty of not praying for some leaders who seem so hard and “hell-bent” on having things their way. But I see now, we cannot know what is in someone’s heart, or if that person has become reprobate. Only God knows who is or is not reprobate, so it is our job to keep praying for these leaders no matter what the appearance may be. Who knows whether God will have mercy on them and on our nation as He did on wicked Nineveh in the time of Jonah!

This is the most encouraging articles I have read to date! Thank you. I know I should be praying for this administration, but have not been able to mouth the words due to their seeming hatred for everything having to do with God and principles upon which this country was founded. God gives no exclusions, so I will pray. In the whole of God’s plan, this is a quick blip, but Eternity is f-o-r-e-v-e-r.
I love reading & praying with the Intercessor each day. I know God works in my life & that of our beloved country. I believe that God can move mountains but we must bring the shovel. Prayer with the Intercessor lets me let go & let God. Thank you!
As Christians we must always pray for our leaders no matter who they are, even if we don’t like them and even if they are our enemies. Jesus asks us to pray for our enemies, and we should ask God to convict their hearts of their sins and pray for their salvation.
Sadly, I do sincerely believe that some people on the earth today cannot be saved because God has turned them over to a reprobate mind. They want nothing to do with God. They hate God.
Reprobate in the Bible means that God has rejected and abandoned those who did not want God. Those who did not want His Righteous, His Cleanliness, His Purity or His Holiness, so God turned them over to a Reprobate Mind, because they did not like to retain God in their knowledge.
These people were Reprobate because of their hatred toward God and their rejection of Him, therefore they are without any hope of being saved. No hope of Salvation.
Jeremiah 6:30 Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them.
Silver that could not be refined was considered worthless (reprobate) and was rejected.
We see many today that openly hate God and want no knowledge of Him. It is evident in their sins and their support of sinful legislation that goes against God and the Bible.
They want to destroy Christian’s freedoms and liberties. They have totally perverted God’s established laws for mankind. They hate God and do not want any knowledge of Him. They want to destroy Christianity and seemingly have no conscience at all concerning sin. They actually celebrate sin and want to establish sinful laws against God.
In Pastor Tony Evan’s Study Bible,
he says “The closer God’s rule is followed in society,
the more ordered society will be. The further God’s rule is removed from culture, the more chaotic cultural becomes”. (end of quote)
It is very sad and concerning to me to see many that have embraced these evils against God. Many of these may have been completely turned over to a reprobate mind. Their conscience has been seared like a hot iron. They have no hope of Salvation.
Romans 1:28 “And even as they did not like to retain God in their
knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;”
Either they don’t have a conscience or their conscience has been seared like a hot iron.
1st Timothy 4:2
Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared
with a hot iron;
Let’s all pray for all of our leaders all the time, and pray for those who are in sin that they do not become reprobate with God, having no hope of Salvation, no hope of Heaven.

We can pray for them as stated above, and praise God in His sovereignty, America set up laws so when leaders become tyrannical, we can also have them recalled and be in full compliance/obedience of the law and order of the constitution of the U.S.

We can pray for our enemies whilst not wanting them to rule over us, and God made a way for us through our laws to drive out those who are a terror to good works. Praise God!
Thank you, for reminding me that there is power in our words. To say I have been disappointed in the outcome of the election would be an understatement. I found that I was growing bitter and cold quickly. The Lord reminded me that He spoke and the power of His words created. Our words are powerful they create or destroy. I choose to create good with my words. Today I have repented of my sin against God and have asked the Lord to create in me a clean heart.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

I have been convicted about not doing enough fasting. There early churched believed fASTING AND PRAYER was the most powerful weapon. Many people feel called to fast on Bread and water on Wed and Fri. …to be fair..it is not wonder bread -it is hardy multigrain bread…I admit I have not been able to give up my daily cup of coffee but then I switch to tea….so it is a baby step in the right direction.

My sweet sister sent this link to me and I must say I did not feel like reading it. God intended for me to however. I have been so heart broken over how the election went and over and over have questioned God why he would allow Biden and Harris to win the Whitehouse (which I still believe they did not) knowing the evil that follows them. As I continued to read God spoke in His kind and gentle way softening my heart. I will pray for the hearts of Biden and Harris. But first I must ask for His forgiveness for I have been very unkind with my words toward these two. God’s holy word never fails.

This has been something I have been struggling with and now, because of God’s Holy Word, I can pray for the enemies of America and people I know who don’t believe God exists and aim to destroy our great nation for their own sinful purposes. Thank you so much for explaining this and showing me God’s powerful Word so I can please Him and pray for all men. Glory be to God in the highest.
These “leaders” are mere pawns in the enemy’s camp. Satan’s forces are found in the spiritual realm. They manipulate and lure anyone who is Godless and vulnerable. Way too many have fallen for the lies. We need to remind ourselves where the battle lies. God has invited us to join the battle. We have been given Kingdom Keys of authority according to the Word. We can bind and loose. We can declare His living Word that does not return void. We can pray Holy Spirit would penetrate someone’s soul and spirit. We can plead the blood of Jesus over people that blocks the enemy’s invasion and opens the atmosphere that could lead to salvation. We can worship and call His presence into the atmosphere.
Lord, heal our broken hearts. Revive Your weary intercessors and give Your vision. Quicken us when our hearts wander from Your purpose. Strengthen us and keep us on track to fight the battle along side You. Give us wisdom, discernment and knowledge to interceded and hit every target straight on. Show Your faithful remnant how to pray for true righteousness, justice, freedom, and restoration for America. We declare You reign over the nations and victory is at hand. Release Your Spirit like never before and bring true unity and unwavering faith among the Body of Christ. Cause every eye to be fixed on You. No turning to the left or right. Cover every believer with the precious blood of Jesus. As deep cries out to deep cause our spirits to be aligned with Yours. Your army of spiritual soldiers are marching onward in confidence and assurance Your, oh Heavenly Father, will never leave us or forsake us. We can declare boldly that Your are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. You reign over the nations You created and the victory is Yours. All in the mighty name of Jesus.

This was a wonderful article that was really an answer to prayer over the struggle for praying for wicked people. However, I do not agree that God loves sinners, he loves “REPENTANT SINNERS” to leave out the word repentant gives the impression that even though I am wicked, God loves me anyway so there is no need to change. Sin does not become sin until someone commits it, so I also do not believe that we can separate the sin from the sinner without REPENTANCE. Our task is to overcome the natural man which Lucifer uses as his plaything, by taking upon us the name of the Savior. Through all this turmoil and upheaval and all the rhetoric being tossed about I have begun to think that we equate our definition of love as the Heavenly Father’s definition, and I am beginning to think the two are different. I had a Hindu friend, in a discussion about the differences in our religions tell me “The Hindus have a god for everything, so we have many, but you Christians only have one God and you try to make him human, instead of making yourself divine.” Although we can only go from our own experience and what we have for comparison I fear my friend was right. It definitely bears some critical thinking on my part.
God’s Word says: Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
We are always sinners, even after his dying for us. Repentance of those sins is what makes that dying effective in our lives. God demonstrates his love in thousands of different ways. His dying did not free us from sin, it allowed us to repent and bring ourselves back in line with Him. The natural man is the enemy of God. Unless we repent with a broken heart and contrite spirit His dying will mean nothing. His dying does not cleanse us of our sin, His dying provided the opportunity to repent and make things right with Him. I could cite scripture after scripture to this effect but I have found that usually lead to what I call “scripture” bashing and I do not participate in that folly. God is not like an earthly father. He cannot nor will He overlook sin, He will not make excuses for it, and He most definitely will not eliminate the consequences for it. I understand where you are coming from. I was there once myself, but through prayer, study, and trying to understand the Savior and His mission in context this is where my journey has led me.
I thank GOD for this article because it has really opened my eyes to what kind of prayer really pleases Him. I am truly convicted and am asking The LORD to please chang my prayer life.Please pray for me.
I am now praying for God to reach those in the Biden administration, in state, county, and local governments so that they turn to God even if they don’t want to and find their answers in God. Let them all feel the peace of God and the love of God and the Truth of God — and express that in their daily walk and conversation. Therefore, all is well just as the Shumenite woman said even though her son lay dead in their home. He, of course, was brought back to life. She trusted in the healing power of God. I trust in the healing power of God.
Difficult choice as I hate what is coming at us and I have not known how to pray. I thank you for giving me clear vision on this. I have been praying something similar to what you have spoken but when the news comes that we are killing babies in other countries too it puts a knife in my heart and I believe in God’s also and we will reap what we sow….may God have mercy on the obedient and righteous ones in Jesus name amen
Thank you Lord for this article! I have written down the prayer points for leaders who don’t know God and for interceding for America. Some I’ve already been praying, but some I’ve not been doing. The Holy Spirit really convicted me to prayer with compassion and love for those I don’t like.
The title of the article refers to praying for “leaders” we don’t like, yet the author proceeds to conflate the word “people” for the word “leader,” beginning in the first sentence. Words either justify or condemn. Words matter in the Courts of Heaven – especially legal words.
That being said, this article is accurate, wise teaching to know how to pray for those we don’t like.
However, if a bank robber has moved to a different country with his plunder, we don’t pray for him to be surrounded with wise counsel and use the loot for good. Never. We don’t refer to him as the legitimate owner because, well … sovereignty. We continue to call him out as a thief and pray accordingly. Joe Biden is not our leader or president.
The sooner we operate in truth, the sooner it can set us free. 🙂

…because the Lord used that episode you mentioned to confirm His Word to me about this too. I was so happy to see it confirmed in scripture. I have the most peace praying for our deliverance and protection FROM Joe and that administration. This is a hard time, to see the results… after so much intercessory prayer and active work in this election. We truly mourn!! It is hard to watch what is happening and it is hard to absorb.
It is clear, Biblically, that God smiled on Trump/Pence and not Biden/Harris. And, then, every door was shut to bring the election fraud and these machines before a judge! And the Georgia election on January 5th did not “smell” right either! It is clear from all of the numbers that have been given to us, through our President’s legal team, that our President won! So, after all that we invested, now this?!
As the inauguration happened and the events preceding it, I then started to perceive that there is something “Bigger” going on! God has allowed the darkness to come into power in DC. He also allowed this plague (virus) almost a year ago! Now, it appears more of the unborn will be slaughtered.
There will be even moreso the lifting up of sexual deviancy. More anti-God forces now have the reins in Washington, D.C. and on and on with unwise decisions that will come forth.. We prayed because we saw all of this to be a possibility.
It is SO against what pleases God and this is what we get after all the investment of ourselves for that which honors God?
The book of faithful Job is about God’s Sovereignty. Job did not understand what happened to him and neither did ANY of his friends!
Now,the whole country gets to watch all that will play out in Washington, DC and the nation. It will be on full display.
For God to allow evil to have this victory is SO non-sensical that it is CLEAR to me that our Sovereign God has something BIGGER going on here so I/we need to trust him on this and keep our faith in Him and keep praying! God can wake up this President and Vice-President and members in the new Administration if He so chooses. He is the one who changes hearts. We are to pray for our leaders and if our Lord says we are to pray for our enemies, then who am I to question that, (no matter how I feel)? He is the Creator who can just SPEAK the universe into existence! WHO am I to question a command given to me or even a suggestion by the Lord? I do not have to like it, just obey. After all, when I pray, I find that prayer for people or a situation actually ends up changing me as well. Plus, when I obey the Lord, my emotions start coming in line with his truths. I have to take care of my feelings and acknowledge them but they cannot have the power to dictate my life. Feelings can lie to us about an event, if they are not lined up with the truth. And, face it, there is a lot we do not understand here!
Yes, we are clearly a divided nation. Jesus said that a house divided against itself cannot stand. We cannot unify with people on anti-Godly terms. We cannot unify on Socialism. At this point to unify means to unify on their terms. So, I pray for God’s will in whatever He is attempting to accomplish here. He is clearly doing it his way and not my way (or our way) so,we should keep praying and keep trusting, especially when nothing makes sense, then our loving and all knowing God has us exactly where he wants us to be!
And, I might add, that it is okay to wrestle and struggle to get to this point. It is how we grow. It is the growing pains that change us. Obeying him will get us to where we should be in all of this.

We do not curse people, but we curse the demons and principalities and wickedness in high places. We pray as in psalms that God would break their teeth and cheekbones and for them to fall into their own pits they devised against God and his people. This is what I pray for the treasonous leaders and we know who they are.
A timely and needed article. In continually trying to see the big picture from His eyes, no doubt we need guidance like this in how to pray.
I’m pretty sure 99.99% of us know that Biden was elected through multiple fraudulent means. That most certainly makes him an illegitimate president. Yet we are still stuck with the present situation and therefore we must obey God’s word and pray accordingly. We have too because choosing not to places us in a sort of box that we can get trapped in. I still am praying that all this corruption will come to light and accountability. I dont know if I agree with this line in the article “He needs us to pray and ask Him to move in order for Him to have permission to move on the earth.” Where in the Bible does it say that God needs permission to do ANYTHING? 1) Gates are a defensive mechanism, not an offensive one. The church wins as soon as it starts plundering hell on purpose, wresting the lost people out of Satan’s grip. Very few bother to actually do this; but when we do, we win.
2) None of the good God did through Pres. Trump was in vain. Good is never in vain according to the Scriptures.
3) Of course we should expect God to intevene and save the babies! We must pray now for this more than ever before—pray and throw ourselves into the cause of LIFE for the unborn and children. We should also and always pray for righteousness and justice to be eatablished in all things. This is the Word of God, and God’s Word never changes, no matter who sits in governmental positions in any nation.

This is helpful in how I frame my prayers. I am so disgusted by their pro abortion and disregard for life. I am frightened by their Marxism. At this time I pray for Deliverance from them and their evil ways. I pray Psalm 94.
This is one of the hardest things I deal with in my personal life. The cheating, self serving, arrogant, so called representatives, who care nothing for our well being, truly disgust me. This writing does show me how little my mind is. What prompted me to pray? Page 3, “We ask the Lord to remove any leader who is not leading the country into the ways of God.”…”We ask the Lord to compel our leaders to walk in the ways of God and speak the words of God, even if they have zero intention of doing so.” Like Balaam.
I lived many years next to an apartment house filled with much evil. There were drugs, foul language, total lack of respect for neighbors, there was death, there was a shooting, fighting, yes, many drugs. Once a man died in one of the apartments and when authorities went in there were all kinds of satanic occultism signs on the walls and other paraphernalia. Anyway, everyone in the neighborhood including me who was trying to raise two good kids…absolutely hated this place. It had a slum lord who didn’t care about it and did not care about the neighborhood. He lived some place else. The point is we hated that place, we cursed it constantly. We wished for it to burn down. We hoped for it to be condemned. We hope someone rich would come in and buy it, tear it down and turn it into something else. Never happened. The longer we lived in our little house across the street to it and cursing it every day the more troublesome it became. I even prayed for all of these curses to come upon it. It just grew worse. I asked God to move us but nothing ever opened up and it seemed we were stuck. So, then in the midst of the struggles and seeking ways to get rid of this trouble in our lives. Jesus took me to these same scriptures you share about loving and praying for your enemy. I was also learning about the power of the tongue and the power of Words. I slowly changed my prayers and my words towards the apartment building and also slowly changed my feelings of hopelessness to, yes, there is hope for the people and the neighborhood and for that building. As I prayed blessings and salvation freedom for these captives, I even started to see the people as people and not as demons. They needed The Light in their lives. They needed The Blessinging. They needed Jesus as much as I need Him. How many years the building on the corner was a curse and it was a perpetual curse even before we moved there it had been deemed the cursed corner of the neighborhood and everyone avoided it as much as possible. It was harder for us though because we were right across the street. Oh it was horrible times but it turned around when my prayers changed. When I decided to follow Jesus and do what He asks His people to do. There began to be shifting in attitudes, shifting in the types of people who were moving in…it quieted down so much. Then after it got very quiet and not the big trouble making bully house on the street we were released to move and move we did. It was actually an incredible transformation in the place and in me. I know that blessing with your thoughts, prayers, words and deeds work miracles and Jesus does too.
His people are called to BLESS and NOT TO CURSE…LOVE and NOT TO HATE…THAT IS WHAT MAKES US THE SALT AND THE LIGHT IN THE WORLD…any natural man can hate and curse…there is always someone there to get under your skin, to ruffle your feathers, to put a cloud over your sunshine if you let it happen. BUT GOD…HE HAS GIVEN US POWERFUL WEAPONS TO REPELL the darkness…LIGHT‼️ Do as your Savior who is your LORD and MASTER tells you to do and in all your doing add to The Kingdom of Light for your LIGHT WHO IS CHRIST IN YOU WILL BE THE HOPE OF GLORY to a world in great need of hope and LET THEM SEE HIS GLORY IN YOU.

Joyce…Beautiful, encouraging. God’s Light from your spirit is is truly glowing all over this page this morning!! How I struggle with praying for those intent upon destroying America…and that very well might be God’s intent. BUT…you help me to see the hopelessness of these people in their place of darkness, and you encourage me to be a little more willing to pray, and have a better idea of how to pray for them. Thank you!!
If anything that I have learned over the past year or so is that with so much going on, it is all beyond our control. God is in control. We can’t change things. We need God to intercede for us. He is the only one who can change the hearts of people. So to seek change, we have to pray to Him to work on our behalf.
You really need to read Joyce’s reply (up above on January 23rd, 7:49 am). You will understand after you read it. Our attitudes really affect everything around us. Hi, Jamie! Your article is truly an answer to my prayer. I was just asking God YESTERDAY during my prayer time … How do I pray for this man … who clearly is not going to implement policies that line up with godly principles like President Trump. And, especially after I read YESTERDAY via Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) News that he is being called the Commander of the Pro-Abortion Army. He will be using MY/OUR tax dollars to fund abortions not just in the US, but all over the world. This made me SO MAD … I was LIVID … and thought to myself WHY in the world GOD, Do you want me to pray for this man … who is going to do such EVIL work. But, after I got over myself and my anger toward him, I knew in my heart of hearts that God not only wants me to pray for him but I need to pray for him because this man needs my/our prayers. So, your article is going to help me do that in the right way. I will definitely be using the information you shared about how to pray for ungodly leaders to do just that. Thank you Edwina! Yes, our President and Vice President need our prayers desperately and we as Christians are responsible to pray for their salvation. We should pray without ceasing for all government officials and for President Trump who is facing impeachment a second time. Our Father in Heaven is our only hope and as His children, we must pray in consistency with His word.
The part about praying differently was helpful. Here is what I would like to see some clarity on. My understanding is that in Paul’s day the Psalms would have informed their prayers. What about the imprecatory psalms? Also, wouldn’t Biden who claims to be Catholic be a Pharisee and weren’t Pharisees the one group Jesus condemned? These are honest questions that the church needs to hear leaders addressing. I am sure I am not the only one who has these questions.
Hi Helen, the Psalms are a wonderful source of vocabulary words and phrases for prayer. The key is that we don’t know the state of anyone’s heart in regards to whether they still have a chance to repent and be saved—or if perhaps they have gone too far and given themselves completely over to a degenerate mind and have no further chances to repent. That’s why we should pray authoritatively for God to raise up righteous leaders and remove wicked ones—and let Him decide how to apply that prayer to the individuals at any level of government.
