Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, a believer known for leading prayers in White House cabinet meetings, is working to help vulnerable teens that age out of foster care.

From CBN:

Turner says 20,000 young people age out of foster care each year. Without families to call their own, many of these teens have no place to go. An estimated 25 percent of them will experience homelessness within four years.

Under Turner’s direction, HUD is taking action to help these children have a safe and smooth transition from foster care to living on their own. CBN News White House Correspondent Kelly Wright recently interviewed Turner about HUD’s investment of five million dollars for youth aging out of foster care to help prevent homelessness among this vulnerable population.

Throughout his interview with Wright, Secretary Turner discussed the importance of caring for these foster teens with nowhere to go. The Secretary explained that he and First Lady Melania Trump have “partnered to provide $25 million to Foster Youth to Independence initiative,” an initiative started by former HUD Secretary Ben Carson during the first Trump administration. He noted that this initiative has served over 5,000 youth since 2019.

Secretary Turner also stressed the importance of “concentrat[ing] on [the foster youth in] our society,” who he lamented are often “overlooked.” He also stressed the importance of Christian mentorship, citing how his “dear father in the Lord,” poured into him for 30 years, a fact he claims “dramatically” impacted his life.

The Bible tells us plainly to care for the fatherless (Isaiah 1:17), and that includes these vulnerable youth in foster care. Let’s thank God for giving us an administration that cares deeply about these youth, and let’s pray for God to meet them where they are!

Thank you. Father, for this move to protect these vulnerable children who are cast out to find their own way and have not been given help to do it. I pray you would provide for each and every one. And I ask that you would strengthen our families that children would be cared for and would be spared this journey into adulthood, but would have loving aid to help them grow up. Thank you for Secretary Turner. Give him favor and discernment as he works this out.
