“Fentanyl is a bioweapon, and this bill treats it like one,” Rep. Addison McDowell, R-N.C., whose younger brother died from a fentanyl overdose, told The Daily Signal.

“The HALT Fentanyl Act slams the door on cartel-made copycats, hits traffickers with mandatory prison time, and backs our law enforcement with real muscle,” McDowell said, adding, “I’m proud to help send this to President Trump’s signature.”

The bill passed in the House with bipartisan support in a vote of 321-to-104 less than a month after sailing through the Senate with similar bipartisan backing.

The bill is aimed at cracking down on the scourge of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is now the No. 1 cause of death for people between the ages of 18 to 45, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2023.

The HALT Fentanyl Act permanently reclassifies fentanyl and “fentanyl-related substances” as Schedule I controlled substances. Possession of a Schedule I controlled substance brings with it more severe sentences.

While fentanyl is already a controlled substance, drug traffickers—including cartels—have sought to circumvent the law by making slight chemical alterations to the lethal drug.

Drug dealers sometimes mix powdered fentanyl with heroin or cocaine to increase the strength of those drugs.

Fentanyl is a highly lethal synthetic opioid, and as little as 2 milligrams can kill. It is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine, the CDC says.

When someone consumes fentanyl, the drug binds to opioid receptors in the brain, the spinal cord, or the peripheral nervous system to block pain. Fentanyl also prompts a large release of dopamine in the brain, which creates a feeling of pleasure or euphoria.

Fentanyl slows the body’s central nervous system, including breathing. An overdose of the drug overwhelms the nervous system and may cause breathing to stop altogether.

Since 2018, more than 250,000 Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses. In fiscal year 2024 alone, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 21,889 pounds of fentanyl—enough to kill nearly 5 billion people, more than half the global population.

Thank You and praise you that You are God and this problem is not too difficult for You the mighty warrior who saves, who laughs at His enemies. You oh God came through for us in impossible situations for our country in the past. We ask for each Police officer would stand in Psalms 91 repeating it as being attacked like they did in WW2 I think as reported in the book the milary edition of Psalms 91 by Peggy Ruth and no man was hit by bullets despite them having no where to hide or reinforcements. Father we pray that churches would surround the police officers in support emotionally physically and spiritually and financially if needed.
Thank you for what You father are doing and will do. We want You to get the glory. Gone are the days of fighting in our own strength. We are facing this battle so we have to rely on You oh God and not on ourselves. Please give us Your wisdom for every situation. You are greater than any intimidation coming against us.
Oh Lord of Host hear our cry for help. Come be our portion our rock.

I join, Cheryl, in this humble plea – we rely fully on You, YHVH. We ask for a multi-faceted approach to this battle – legal action, blessing and protection on law enforcement, border protection, destruction of Mexican cartels, disruption in their production and distribution, etc. But we recognize that if there was no demand for illegal drugs, the business would not exist. So, again, we need a mighty move of Your Spirit reviving the ekklesia, and awakening the lost. Have mercy upon us!

Thank you, Father that this bill passed. May it spare many lives. Give our police discernment and leads so this bill can bear fruit! Bring those who are involved whether those who use it or those who sell it to salvation in Jesus.

Shout for joy to the Lord for His marvelous work. The God who sees, knows and understands. We ask for a revival joy would return to your people . That would would be salt and light and there would be no need for drugs. We also ask for police to stand in the names of God to take out criminals. Ps 118. Police not rely on their own strength but God’s. Police be led in such away to be aware in the spirit to where a crime is happening and how to deal with it like they did in taking the promise land.
