White House sources indicate HHS is auditing federal grants tied to such hospitals to identify funding cuts that won’t impact critical care or research, while preparing for swift action once legal blocks lift. The move affects hospitals tied to Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and TriCare. Institutions that continue gender-transition services for minors could face severe financial consequences.
CMS chief Dr. Mehmet Oz reiterated that procedures lacking robust, long-term evidence should not be supported with taxpayer dollars—warning of possible hospital expulsion from Medicaid. Some leading pediatric centers have already paused or shut their gender-care programs in response, including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which relied on federal funding for nearly 65% of its budget.
The HHS’s actions dovetail with a broader federal review. Earlier this year, HHS released a 409-page report challenging the scientific basis and safety of gender transitions for youth, opposing major medical associations, and citing uncertain benefits alongside potential harm. The report omitted author names and has been criticized by medical groups for bias and undermining established protocols.
