The proposals rising out of Washington D.C. this month, from making D.C. the nation’s 51st state to expanding the Supreme Court, have awoken Christians to the fact that the state of our nation becomes more grave every week.
But what is the solution?
Joseph, Daniel and Esther
When I worked as a staffer for a member of Congress on Capitol Hill, a young woman in our office had a verse pinned to the corkboard at her desk. It came from Esther 4:14, where Esther is challenged to use her newfound position of influence for good, to speak to the king and save her people: “…who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther’s story was that of God’s chosen, placed in proximity to power so she could deliver a timely message and save an entire people. Now, for many Christians called to work on Capitol Hill, that is their story as well.
Of course, widespread repentance is the ideal way to save the nation and reform the government. However, in dark times when the people of God are under duress, the Biblical example for government intervention has been a bold Kingdom Ambassador in the right place at the right time.
Remember Joseph, who saved an entire nation from starvation, or Esther, who saved the Jewish people from execution, and even Daniel, who gave a prophetic interpretation that caused a godless king to fall to his knees and worship the Lord.
It turns out a few hundred Christian staffers scattered throughout Congress are often the last line of defense our nation has against the most radical proposals coming out of Washington in these difficult days.
They are God’s secret weapons. My digging found they desperately need the spiritual backup of the intercessory community.
Insider Intercessory Intelligence
I received an urgent request for prayer this week from a source on Capitol Hill who works and interacts daily with one of the most prominent members of Congress. My source is trusted and is committed to seeing the Kingdom of God influence our nation for the better. Some speculate his boss may run for president in the not too distant future.
Now, lest you think Congressional staff only get coffee and push papers, think again. Capitol Hill staffers have wide discretion in how legislation is written and how members focus their energy. They often understand the issues better than the members for whom they work.
“Of course it depends on the office, but fundamentally most members just don’t have the time to keep up with the vast majority of what’s happening on the Hill,” my source said. “So they pretty much only take the word of their staff in terms of what is in this bill and how should we be thinking about it.”
“Staff are crafting these bills from basically nothing and then pitching them to their bosses, and a lot of times their bosses will just grab them,” he added.
With that influence, there are many “Esther opportunities” to speak up. However, those moments are so fleeting and potentially risky, that these Kingdom Ambassadors need an infusion of supernatural guidance.
“The stuff that matters the most are these flashpoints,” he said. “I’ve got 30 minutes to say something or not.”
The staffer I spoke with asked for prayers that the Christians on the Hill have “peace and grace to abide, boldness to speak with courage and the wisdom or discernment to know when to say something and when not to.”
“I always think of Daniel as that powerful example because obviously he worked for a pretty evil person, but then there were these moments when he knew this is the time to put my foot down and he did it,” my source said. “That kind of discernment…you just have to be able to hear God.”
He also said there has been a recent stirring among many of the believers on the Hill to gather and pray. Recently, two small groups have blossomed. They pray, worship and study the Bible together and have grown to several dozen attendees.
“I’ve just seen intercession, like people prayer walking in the Rotunda or across the Capitol or prayer nights springing up and different staffers jumping in on that,” he said. “Among the real deep genuine believers, I see God stirring faith and a heart to pray in a really fresh new way…”His last request was that the intercessors pray Christians on the Hill “be known by our love.”
“My goodness, that would be huge,” he said. “It is cutthroat…and if you really love people, it is wild to people in that context.”
So it seems in this time of deep spiritual battle, God has hidden his secret weapons all around Washington, D.C., and they need our help.
The Call to Prayer
Pray for the Esthers, Daniels, and Josephs God has placed in Washington, D.C. and specifically on Capitol Hill. Pray that they can stand in courage at the right time to interject the truth of God at the risk of their own career and that the gatherings of believers on Capitol Hill grow and are strengthened.
Pray most of all, though, for those who have been prepared for “such a time as this.”
It seems we need them now as much as ever before.
With this mind, let’s unite behind this threefold prayer strategy:
Pray for these appointed ones to have…
- Boldness to speak the truth to power in the right moment, and the discernment and ears to hear God so they recognize that moment when it arrives.
- Protection from spiritual attack, anxiety, and from the manipulative and political spirits that infect D.C.. Pray that the staff would have FAITH in God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and encouragement that they are making a difference.
- Pray also that our leaders ears’ would be tuned to hear the truth of God and block out the deception of the enemy so our land can live in peace and righteousness.

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

“Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.” (Ps 17:7)

Thank you IFA and Casey Harper for this article of information and confirmation. I have wondered if there were staffers (and others) who might be committed, who might be standing strong and be able to know each other and join together. Thank God that this is happening and I am praying that He is guiding, sustaining, uplifting and providing encouragement through their being able to join together and that He provides strength, faith and boldness and furthers their mission.
It was well known that there were many Bible study and Prayer groups in the Trump administration and greatly because there was encouragement and participation from the top of many agencies and from the White House. It is so heartening to know that some; hopefully many are continuing and sustaining. May God use this and these believers to strengthen and further his plan and his purpose. May they be a wall and a hedge against forces of evil in the administration and in the houses of government. May their numbers multiply and grow stronger and may they be used and emboldened by the Holy Spirit.
Precious Father in heaven we love You. Thank You for our beautiful brothers and sisters in Christ who work in D.C. According to Your Word, Please teach their hands to war and their fingers to fight. Teach them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Enlarge and order their steps and set them up upon a rock of high places. Uphold them, and lift up their hands above their enemies. May their shields of faith repel all witchcraft and every fiery dart from the enemy. May every wicked word spoken against them fall to the ground and disintegrate into nothing, in the name of Jesus Christ! Make their opposition fall into confusion, disarray, and incompetence. May every wicked plan drawn up against your children be burned out by the fire from Your altar.

I am sooooo happy to read this article. I had never given any thought to the number or the influence of the staffers. How silly! I will gladly join this prayer effort to hold them up before the throne of God and to invoke God’s guidance and protection for them. I’m printing this piece for my “prayer pile,” all the things I try to pray for every day.
I am thinking, too, that we should be praying for the residents of the district. Their lives are affected daily by the drama on the Hill.

What a great and timely article! I get so many emails in my feed each day, but took the time to read this one. I just so happens that yesterday I got a phone call from a staffer of one of our North Carolina representatives, and we had a wonderful conversation on the phone. She called me personally to assure me that this particular rep was fully-supporting HB 558 and wanted me to know that. I was so moved that she called, and then realized that we DO have very real people in leadership positions in our nation, and they are standing for strong, godly, American values, and yes, they need our prayers! Wonderful article. It is a great refreshment to learn there are Christian staffers who may be in a position to influence their congressmen. But I am cognizant about the fact that they are operating in a dark atmosphere at the Capitol. So glad they get together for Bible study, fellowship and prayer! A timely prayer. I have been praying for the 5 that I believe walked away from their appointed tasks, Pence, Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavenaugh and Barrett. Esther has been on my mind from the beginning. Also, I prayer walked around the Capitol, Supreme Court and White House when Obama was there. I had an assurance that our LORD knew every whisper and thought, that nothing is hidden from HIM. I have despaired of our GOD even being allowed in. This article is so wonderful, thank you. Those Christians there contains many Esthers and Gideons although I am sure they don’t feel that way.

I declare and decree that Christian workers in DC are and will continue to have the Ester, Daniel and Joseph anointings to especially flow in decernment and holy ghost power at the God ordained times in Jesus name. I am reminded of the time during 9-11 of the plane that was hijacked and a group of Americans banded together and stormed the cockpit of the plane and stopped it from crashing into its destination. Their rally cry was: LET’S ROLL!!! Okay intercessors LET’S ROLL!!! and storm this country with prayer especially those strategic secret weapons in DC. We are the remnant!!!!!
I agree with all the prayers below. When God is with us, who can be against us? The outward world may even seem to win at times, but we know we are sojourners in a foreign land. But, God we cannot help others that need it if we are bound. Please Lord unbind all your people and allow them to speak truth wherever they are without Satan himself attacking them. Just as you were with the armies of Israel and Judah. It doesn’t matter if we are in the minority, what matters is the hearts of those who serve you! Praise God for His secret weapons! May they focus their energy like lazers at strategic issues, Lord Anoint them with fresh oil, eyes to see, ears to hear, the boldness to stand up and speak truth to power. Lord, we pray specific intercessors would back them up! Rees Howells, a British intercessor was trained by God to hear his voice, and be totally obediant. In this way, he and his Bible School students were instrumental in saving the World during the air battle for Britan. He wrote in his diary that Hitler would be turned back, before it happened! Like Elijah, it’s easy for me to feel as if there are only a few faithful Christians remaining – and that Satan has the government by the throat! It’s encouraging to be reminded that the Lord has planted Christians in strategic places to fulfill His will. My prayer, “Father, give Christians the opportunity and courage to stand up for righteous decisions and the wisdom to know what to say and when to say it. I pray in agreement! God is working even when we can’t see it. We lift up those who are on their knees praying for the wisdom and strength to do what Father would have them do – to speak clarity and foresight and unity into the works they do. Father send your angels to protect them – guard them day and night. Give them courage to say what needs to be said but with love and truth and gentleness. Armor them up each and every day as they battle for what this country was founded on. We thank you for all those and ask that You continue to enlarge the group. Abundant thanks for the encouragement of God’s people present and engaged in places of influence and power. It is to His glory that He demonstrates His Presence in seemingly “small” ways! Father, may Your strong Spirit rise with great wisdom and courage in these frontline warriors, and within Your Church to recognize our responsibility to support them with strong, consistent intercession. It’s funny but not funny that the youth, I am speaking from my own experience with young adults run on the fly An example of this would be their use of their debit cards. They don’t keep the receipts and don’t write into their checkbooks, so they don’t know what is pending and how to project their spending habits, against the incoming paychecks and the outgoing bills by check not cleared yet. I still keep track of my checkbook, write down on my calendar when the bills are due and how much I can spend is a bonus for me! It is great to have disciplined leaders that are behind the scenes writing these bills. The leaders that were voted in have to step up and do the homework and not take the papers and run on the fly, not fully understanding what is in front of them. I want to see righteous and holy decisions. Can you do that?
Very insightful article. Thank you for penning the words and opening up our eyes to the ‘inside’ of D.C. Praying for those Esthers, Daniels and Josephs within Capitol Hill to arise. Father God, please strengthen their minds, their voice, their hands to ‘speak boldly, timely, and grant them supernatural favor.’
We forget God has His people in high places. We must remember to pray for them as they intercede. I commit to praying for them. Forgive me Father for my failure to remember my Brothers and Sisters working in government.
The responses from officials I contact reveal their spiritual state. I rejoice over those who have a relationship with the Lord and pray special protection and blessings on them while praying for undetermined ones and others to be used for God’s purposes also.
My prayer partner & I pray daily for y’all, especially for the points on IFA. My favorite verse is Joshua 1:9 Be strong & courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
