The increasing willingness of parents in North Carolina to homeschool their children has led to the online system for filing a Notice of Intent to Establish a Home School being temporarily overwhelmed. “The system is not currently available due to an overwhelming submission of Notices of Intent (NOI),” the website explained to visitors in the evening hours of July 1.

“It will be back online as soon as possible,” stated the North Carolina Department of Administration, to which the Division of Non-Public Education belongs. “We apologize for any inconvenience as we work to process NOIs as quickly as possible.” . . .

According to North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE), there were over 90,000 homeschooling families in the state last school year (2018-2019), which amounts to more than 226,000 students. . . .

In the first year, “the NC homeschool community had experienced a phenomenal 32% increase in numbers to 1,385 homeschools. Since then, the number of homeschools in North Carolina has grown at an annual compound growth rate of more that 16%.” . . .

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), public schools across the United States are making it harder for parents to withdraw their children from those schools amid the coronavirus pandemic. . . .

Schmidt pointed out “two main reasons” for public schools making it harder for parents to withdraw their children from school.

On the one hand, “school officials are fearful of losing too many students to homeschooling,” which causes school districts to also lose money.

Factoring in various types of funding, Utah spends about $7,000 per student, whereas New York, as the most costly state, spends more than $22,000. For public schools, a lot of money is involved in losing students.

The second reason given by Schmidt for not processing the paperwork necessary to get out of public school “is perhaps a staffing issue, just a lacking staffing issue to process these withdrawals.”

He clarified that it is “not always an issue of trying to stop parents from homeschooling but there is a significant part of that involved.”

In North Carolina, parents have to notify the state of their intent to operate a home school, including the name of the school, and the name of the chief administrator, which generally is a parent. . . .

As reported by the Raleigh News & Observer, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat, “delayed his decision Wednesday on whether schools should reopen this fall under minimal social distancing, moderate social distancing or with remote learning only.”

Meanwhile, schools in Wake County, where the capital of Raleigh is located, are determined to reopen “in August at one-third capacity, with students rotating in and out of campus on a weekly basis, unless the state allows looser social distancing requirements.”

I think it is a wonderful step forward. I have four incredible grandchildren who have been home schooled and are now going into a private school. In high school. They are the most well-rounded, self-disciplined , interesting, and FUN kids I know. They have a strong family unit and are Lea and strong leaders. Some people think home schooling means they are kept at home all the time but that’s just not true. My kids had Classes at their church, participated in all sorts of activities. So many years ago, the government decided it was better for them to take over our children. Parents ultimately gave up their position and many never thought to look at the lessons their kids were learning. It’s been a rude awakening and only God could have exposed us to what was happening with our children. He’s resetting everything. I think this is an opportunity to re-evaluate how and who we allow to train our children in the way they should go.

Heavenly Father, In Jesus’ Name, You always make things work for good, even in the midst of epidemics.

I thank you that so many parents are opting to Home School children, and pray they will be using curriculum
that teaches the truth of Your Word. The Ten Commandments will be taught, the stories of the Bible, and Your interaction with Your creation throughout history will be learned by our young people so they will have a
faith and reverence for You and in the world’s history as You have interacted and brought people to a saving knowledge of Your Son’s sacrifice for the sin’s of the world. I praise and honor Your name for Your goodness towards us. Bless all families and parents as they take on the task of educating their children in the light of Your Gospel. Amen

It’s good that children get homeschooling as long that it’s not common core curriculum with anti-American teaching. We have a daughter who is and has homeschooling her 6 children of them 2 graduated with aa.degree: the rest are still young.

I am a teacher and a woman of faith. Don’t you think this is happening based on scare tactics? Children are not dying of COVID-19. Yes it spreads to elderly, but why not focus on protecting the elderly? Why not continue as a more aware nation of this virus? Why not see that this pandemic is losing its death grip. What if it is phasing out? Turning into a common virus that will be less and less dangerous as we learn more? Just know! My school is full of godly teachers and staff. It is our MISSION FIELD.I am called to teach. Schools are the greatest mission field in our country and the media wants to make you think they are being indoctrinated negatively-but OHHHH how untrue it is in my state. Our children are being lead by ministers that also happen to be teachers. I know many! I personally am the door keeper type in my school. Every morning I pray and anoint my room. My students? Are on my prayer list each year. Literally I pray all year for them and their families, my school and all persons on staff. I do not think some realize teachers are CALLED. Will homeschool work for parents-it is harder than you think. Is it really God’s will? Many kids in lost families will be suffering. I think it is based on fear as parents think homeschool is the answer. What about the social aspect and friendships? I think we should not act on fear. That is what is driving many to not send children. Does this mean the media won. 🙁 I wish people could SEE THE TRUTH and stop falling for lies. My heart aches that people will PRAY and follow God’s agenda not their own. I guess there will be some students to teach in the schools? I will love those and see them as my responsibility to help them discover God’s purpose for their lives. I love to know my students-as I pray for them God shows me gifts he has for each one. I try to help them discover God doesn’t make junk and they have something great to accomplish here on earth. I pray God’s will be done. Not the media. Just my thoughts.

    Tammy,
Thank you so much for all you do for children in the school system and for your thought-provoking comment. Thank you for being a faithful intercessor! May we continue to pray, united, for God’s will to be done and continue to intercede on the behalf of others that we, as a nation, would follow God’s agenda, not our own.
