I Prayed have prayed
Father, we pray that our nation's key financial institutions would never again deny services to Americans simply due to their political options. We pray against all political biases in banking.

A sweeping federal investigation has found that America’s largest banks maintained policies that could discriminate against customers based on their political beliefs, religious affiliations, and lawful business activities. The findings raise serious questions about whether financial institutions have unfairly denied Americans access to banking services for reasons unrelated to financial risk.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released its findings Wednesday following an investigation ordered by President Donald Trump. Regulators examined nine major banks, reviewing approximately 420,000 pages of documents, nearly 100,000 complaints, and hundreds of individual banking decisions.

From the Daily Caller News Foundation:

“Today’s report provides irrefutable evidence that the nation’s largest banks have denied, debanked and discriminated against customers and lawful businesses,” Comptroller Jonathan Gould said in a statement.

In one instance, PNC declined a line of credit to a media company after employees raised concerns about its owners’ conservative political affiliations. The company was growing financially, and its relationship manager had not identified specific credit concerns at the time, according to the report.

The OCC found that WePay used screening terms including “MAGA,” “Make America Great” and “America First” to flag potentially prohibited merchant activity. JPMorgan’s own reputation-risk employees participated in certain WePay account-closure decisions, although the report said they did not provide input on the February 2021 closure.

The investigation examined JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, Capital One, PNC Bank, TD Bank, and BMO Bank. According to the OCC, all nine maintained policies between 2020 and September 2025 that could encourage discriminatory banking decisions.

The report also revealed that political discrimination was not limited to conservatives. Capital One declined potential relationships with pro-abortion organizations, a public education group associated with Democratic candidates, and a gun-rights organization. Meanwhile, other restrictions affected businesses involved in firearms manufacturing, fossil fuel production, tobacco, and digital assets.

JPMorgan Chase faced particular scrutiny after investigators found that employees had modified internal records concerning decisions to deny services to a conservative-leaning retailer, removing descriptions such as “right-wing.” The bank maintained that the records were updated following subsequent reviews and that all versions were preserved for auditing.

The banking industry has expressed support for clearer standards. JPMorgan acknowledged that years of regulatory scrutiny had contributed to excessive caution, while the Bank Policy Institute endorsed efforts to prioritize measurable financial risks over subjective reputational concerns.

The findings build upon the OCC’s December 2025 preliminary investigation. Although regulators could not determine precisely how many customers were affected or quantify their financial losses, the agency indicated that additional regulatory changes may be necessary to prevent future discrimination.

Access to financial services is essential for individuals, families, businesses, and ministries alike. When banks make decisions based on political or religious beliefs rather than legitimate financial considerations, fundamental questions arise about fairness and freedom of conscience. Let’s pray that financial institutions operate with integrity, that regulators uphold equal treatment under the law, and that Americans are protected from discrimination based on their sincerely held beliefs.
