(The Center Square) – Former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan are under criminal investigation by the FBI for alleged wrongdoing related to their role in investigating potential ties between Russia and President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election.

Sources within the Department of Justice told Fox News that CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred incriminating evidence to FBI Director Kash Patel and an investigation was subsequently opened.

The allegations against Brennan include giving false testimony to Congress. The Department of Justice officials did not disclose what Comey’s alleged wrongdoing involves.

Ratcliffe published a “lessons learned” review last week regarding a 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that determined that Russia was involved in helping Trump win the 2016 presidential election. Ratcliffe’s review found that the Trump-Russia assessment had “procedural anomalies” and lacked intelligence standards.

Brennan and Comey appeared before Congress in May and June of 2017, respectively, testifying that Russia interfered with the 2016 election with “sophistication” and “overwhelming technical efforts.”

Trump at the time, accused Comey of lying during his congressional testimony and denied any meddling by Russia in the presidential election. Trump fired Comey from his role as FBI director in May 2017, shortly before Comey’s testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt welcomed the FBI’s investigation Tuesday, alleging corruption in Comey and Brennan’s testimonies and the Trump-Russia probe.

“Both of these disgraceful individuals turned against our Constitution and our country, and I’m sure they did in fact lie to Congress,” Leavitt said. “What we have seen is corruption at the highest levels against President Trump.”

Neither Comey nor Brennan have publicly commented on the investigation. The FBI had not confirmed the investigation at the time of publication.
