“Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton . . .  issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey:

‘This is an important move to restore public confidence in the fair administration of justice at the federal level. Mr. Comey did not seem to understand some of the laws he was asked to enforce and unfortunately politicized his sensitive position as the FBI director. “Over the weekend, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein met with the eight candidates for permanent FBI director, and no more interviews are currently scheduled, according to a U.S. official familiar with the process. The potential nominees are: Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas; Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe; Former Justice Department official Alice Fisher; Michael Garcia, a former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan; Fran Townsend, who was homeland security adviser to President George W. Bush; U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson; Adam Lee, the FBI special agent in charge of the Richmond, Virginia, office; Mike Rogers, a former FBI special agent and Republican congressman from Michigan who was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

Trump, in brief remarks, told reporters on Monday that the search for a new FBI chief was ‘moving rapidly.’ . . .

“Former top FBI official James Kallstrom said Sunday it’s ‘disgraceful’ that Andrew McCabe is the acting director of the agency despite his wife’s cozy relationship to Hillary Clinton operatives. . . .

McCabe, who took over as acting FBI director when President Trump fired James Comey last week, is married to Jill McCabe, who took $467,500 from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s political action committee during her run for Virginia state Senate. . . .

The funds began flowing to Jill McCabe two months after the FBI launched its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server in July 2015.

“Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he supports blocking the confirmation of a new FBI director until the Justice Department appoints a special prosecutor to lead an investigation into potential ties between Trump campaign advisers and the Russian government.

Since a new FBI director could be confirmed with a simple majority, Mr Schumer acknowledged that the 46 Democrats and two Independents in the Senate would need the support of a few of their Republican colleagues.

So far, most Republican senators have been united in their opposition to the appointment of a special prosecutor.
