Faith opened the way for the Hebrews to cross the Red Sea as if on dry land, but when the Egyptians tried to cross they were swallowed up and drowned! (Heb. 11:29 TPT)

For 400 years, God’s people lived as slaves in Egypt. It wasn’t always that way. The Israelites once knew prosperity and favor in Egypt under Pharaoh. Joseph was so favored with wisdom and integrity, he was an exalted figure in Egypt. Something changed. Exodus 1:8 says, “Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done.” They went from prosperity to poverty, from abundance to abuse under this new ruler. They knew deliverance would come, they just didn’t know when. All they could do was groan and cry out to God and He delivered.

The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act. (Exodus 2:22-25)

God raised up a man named Moses to be a deliverer to the people. Moses himself should have never lived. An edict demanded all boys born in Egypt be tossed into the river, and only the females would live. But the Lord hid Moses, he was actually raised by Pharaoh’s own daughter. This meant he grew up with Egypt’s best while his own family and people were in slavery. Moses fled to Egypt and eventually encountered Yahweh, the great I AM. He was sent back to the very place he fled with a new commission. Go to Pharaoh in the name of the Lord and tell him “Let my people go that they may worship me.” Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he refused to release God’s people from bondage. Ten plagues later, Pharaoh finally let the Israelites leave. He then changed his mind once again, took his army, and in hot pursuit decided to deal with the Israelites once and for all. Pharaoh was delighted to see them trapped by the Red Sea, there was no escape…or so he thought. As the people began to panic in fear for their lives seeing the approaching army, Moses comforted the people. 

Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Ex. 14:13,14)

What happened next is a great miracle. The Red Sea split in two, providing an escape for the Israelites and the end of the Egyptians. The miracles, signs, and wonders always exalt the power of God and never man. I believe in part that is why the Lord chose Moses. After all, he is recorded as the most humble man on the face of the earth. God could have easily done it all on His own, however we see Him telling Moses to do acts of faith. The Lord even tells Moses, “why are you crying out to me? Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the waters so the Israelites can cross over on dry ground.” (Ex. 14:15,16) 

Notice that God didn’t act, Moses acted. He obeyed in faith believing that if he raised his staff as God said, it would happen, and it happened just as the Lord said. Do you feel as if you are walled in by a great sea of your own? Does it look impossible, as if there’s no escape? Do you feel as if you are being mocked for believing that God will do the impossible in your life or in this nation? Well then, maybe it would be best if we stopped crying over our situation and started acting in faith that if we do what God asks of us, He will do the rest. 

Lord, I thank You that You will make a way when there is no way. When it looks impossible, when it looks like we are surrounded by our enemies, we can stand still and watch Your mighty deliverance come forth. Let my heart be still in the face of fear or (______________) that is plaguing me. Open the eyes of our hearts to see Your mighty works. You never change Lord. If You’ve done it before, You can do it again. Give us faith to believe in that in face of turmoil. You can deliver us. You can deliver this nation with Your mighty hand and outstretched arm. You are the way maker! My faith, my hope, my confidence is in You Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen. 

Then the LORD used his mighty hand and powerful arm to bring us out of Egypt. He used spectacular and awe-inspiring deeds, miraculous signs, and amazing things. (Deut. 26:8 GWT)
