The following is an excerpt from our daily devotional series Faith that Overcomes.

Moses had since passed away, but God raised up an anointed leader named Joshua. He was a man who knew combat. More importantly he knew the presence of God. When God would come down and visit Moses in the tabernacle, Joshua could be found at the door of the tent lingering in God’s presence. (Ex. 33:11)

A promise is yet to be fulfilled. God told Abraham he would father many nations and that he would lead his people into the promised land that flows with milk and honey. Only part of the promise had been fulfilled. Joshua is commissioned with leading the people into this promised land, however there was something in the way. God, because He is a generational God, opens up the Jordan River and this new generation walks on dry ground and crosses over. They never saw the Red Sea split, so God demonstrates His power once more. If He’s done it before, He can do it again. God gives Joshua the instructions to occupy the land. March around the town for six days, on the seventh day march seven times and the priests will blow the horn. All the people were instructed to give a shout as loud as they could. The Lord said if they did this, the walls would fall. (Josh. 6:1-6)

Joshua obeyed the Lord and acted in faith and sure enough on the seventh day Joshua commands the people, shout for the Lord has given you this town.”  What makes the miracle is that Jericho was a fortified city. The gates were shut at night, they had guards all around. It was not easy to get in or pass through. The Israelites were unwelcome company. The people of Jericho heard about the Israelites’ powerful God who parted the sea and dealt with Pharaoh and the Egyptians. Joshua could have been intimidated. His predecessor split the Red Sea and was called the man who spoke to God face to face as a man speaks to a friend. But Joshua trusted in God and acted in faith. God noted Joshua’s obedience, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses.” (Josh 3:7) He assured Joshua He would be with him, and that was enough for him.

Is there something that God has promised you but you’ve yet to get a hold of it? Do you feel as if there are fortified walls in the way? Circumstances that look too hard to the human eyes?

The good news is God wants to bring those walls down. He wants you to possess your promise as much as you want to. Joshua is given instructions in chapter 3. The first command was “move out.” Sometimes getting your promise is as simple as moving in faith. His second command was to “consecrate” himself. This meant Joshua was being set apart by God. He was to live a holy life of devotion. After he did these things, all that was left was to obey. How silly must the Israelites have looked to be marching around a city that was protected by guards and strengthened with bars and gates of iron? Many believe Jericho was located on a hill. Sometimes faith can make you look like a fool. But it’s only foolish to those who don’t know the power of the One true God.

Lord, I thank You that no one can stand against You. No matter how strong or fortified, when You have given us a sure promise, nothing can stand in the way. I ask two things of You Lord. Let my offspring see Your miraculous working power. What You have done for me, You can do for my family. You are a generational, covenant-keeping God and I praise You. Times are hard right now. I don’t know how I will receive my promise, but I know by faith I will. I will not lose my shout. I will lift my voice in praise and worship, and victory for You have given me my city (_______________), my nation(_______________), my promise (_________________), and I will watch the walls fall down. In Jesus’ name, amen.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it. (Matt. 16:18)

Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.  Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! (Acts 16:25,26)
