A recent investigation revealed in November that Somali fraudsters in Minnesota have been pocketing money set aside for state programs for years. Now, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz is telling Minnesota Governor to fix the fraud or lost federal funding.

“This is a clear dereliction of duty,” Oz wrote in a statement posted to X. “Everyone from Gov. Tim Walz on down needs to be investigated, because they’ve been asleep at the wheel.”

CMS has already shut down the housing program and frozen provider enrollment in several abused programs. Oz now demands Minnesota provide weekly fraud updates, freeze high-risk provider enrollment for six months, verify all current providers and submit a corrective action plan.

“The message to Walz is clear: either fix this in 60 days or start looking under your couch for spare change, because we’re done footing the bill for your incompetence,” Oz wrote.

Administrator Ox notes that the fraudsters used taxpayer money to buy luxury cars and purchase overseas real estate. Most alarmingly, as IFA covered previously, some taxpayer money even made its way back to Somalia where it ended up in the hands of terrorists.

This revelation of fraud in Minnesota has shaken Washington. President Trump responded to the investigation by ending deportation protections for Somali migrants in the state and sending ICE into Minneapolis. Meanwhile, Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali lawmaker representing Minnesota’s fifth congressional district, has come under fire over links to the fraudsters.

As the Trump administration works to hold those responsible for this fraud accountable, let’s pray that this level of government waste and abuse would never happen in our nation again.
