I Prayed have prayed
Lord, thank you for the Trump administration's work against race-based admissions in high schools. Please give the administration continual wisdom, strength, and favor as they seek to end DEI in schools. May justice reign in our schools, and may discrimination cease. Amen.

The U.S. Department of Justice has reached a settlement with the Jersey City Board of Education requiring one of New Jersey’s highest-performing public high schools to end race- and national origin-based admissions practices. The agreement concludes a federal civil rights investigation and marks one of the first K-12 enforcement actions under the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate race-based preferences in education.

The settlement reflects a broader national debate over how selective schools should admit students following recent court decisions and federal policy changes. Supporters of race-neutral admissions argue that students should be evaluated based on merit and achievement, while opponents have expressed concern about how such changes could affect diversity in highly competitive schools.

From The Epoch Times:

This week the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and the Jersey City Board of Education entered a voluntary settlement agreement to end race and national origin discrimination in student admissions at Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

The agreement ends a federal probe into the school’s admissions process and requires the district to change how it selects students for the selective college-preparatory campus. It may no longer reserve seats based on race or national origin.

The new policy must be in effect before the admissions cycle for the 2027–28 school year. The settlement remains in effect until mid-August 2029, and the district must file regular status reports to the Justice Department during that period.

Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School is one of New Jersey’s top-ranked public high schools. According to U.S. News & World Report, it ranks fourth in the state. The school serves a predominantly minority student population, with more than one-third of its students classified as economically disadvantaged.

The settlement follows President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive order, “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” which directed federal agencies to eliminate race-based preferences at institutions receiving federal funding. The administration has argued that diversity, equity, and inclusion policies that rely on race violate federal civil rights laws. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has said students should be evaluated based on “merit and accomplishment,” while Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor has stated that race-based policies have discriminated against some students, including white and Asian applicants.

The Justice Department said it will monitor the Jersey City school district’s compliance through 2029. The agreement is part of a broader effort that includes investigations into race-based scholarships, admissions policies, and other programs at dozens of colleges and universities. Schools that fail to comply with applicable federal civil rights requirements could face additional legal action or the loss of certain federal education funding.

For us, this story touches on principles of equal justice and the inherent dignity of every person. Scripture teaches that God shows no partiality, and we see fairness and impartiality as essential qualities of both individuals and institutions. As debates over education policy continue, let’s pray that schools, government officials, and communities pursue justice, wisdom, and opportunities that honor the value of every student.
