The strike has come to an end and the strikers have received a hefty raise. How will this impact our economy and November’s election?

From The Wall Street Journal. U.S. ports reopened after dockworkers agreed to return to work, ending a three-day strike that threatened to disrupt the American economy just weeks ahead of the presidential election.

The breakthrough Thursday came after port employers offered a 62% increase in wages over six years, according to people familiar with the matter. …

The new offer, up from an earlier proposed raise of 50%, came after the White House privately and publicly pressed the large shipping lines and cargo terminal operators who employ the longshore workers to make a new offer to the union.

Many of the ports opened Friday to begin clearing containers that had remained on docks and to clear a backlog of more than 40 containerships that transportation data firm Xeneta said had gathered at sea. Some ports, at places like New York-New Jersey and Norfolk, Va., said it would take a day or so to resume full operations.

President Biden applauded the agreement, saying in a statement, “collective bargaining works, and it is critical to building a stronger economy from the middle out and the bottom up.”

The International Longshoremen’s Association and port operators, in a joint statement, said the tentative agreement would extend the prior contract, which expired at the start of this week, through Jan. 15, 2025, while the two sides negotiate on other issues, including automation on the docks.

The latest offer would raise the base hourly rate for ILA port workers to $63 from $39 over six years, the people familiar with the matter said. One of the people said the offer is being made on the condition that dockworkers go back to work and agree to efficiency gains.

The offer is less than the union demand for an increase of 77% over the term of the contract but a far larger increase than most major labor contracts, including a contract reached last year covering the separate union representing West Coast longshore workers. …

The cost of the higher wages will be borne by cargo owners and shipping lines that manage the port terminals. Global giants such as Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk and China’s Cosco Shipping operate many of the boxships that unload at U.S. ports.

Stocks of big shipping companies including Maersk, Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd and Cosco fell sharply Friday on news of the deal, which will bring higher costs and ended expectations of higher freight rates that would have been triggered by the labor disruptions. …

Unfortunately this strike is not really over. The contract has only been extended. I fear this will reappear again in January, so it can be used as a political wedge issue, depending on who wins the election. I personally was appalled when I heard that these dock workers average $140,000 a year and they are demanding more. No concern for Americans hurt by inflation or in need of supplies for hurricane relief. I pray God will give wisdom to our leaders ( as he did with DeSantis in FL) so this will be truly resolved by Jan.🙏🏻

Lord, thank You for helping America escape an economic disaster. I thank You that You have the ‘upper hand’ in all of our issues as a nation. Help each of us to continue to pray for our beloved nation at this time. Lord, humble us to seek You more and love our neighbors more. Unite us with Your love and bring reconciliation where needed. We really do need each other in these challenging times! Heal our divisions!
I pray this in Your name and for Your glory Jesus.

I think the unions in this country do not care about the US. It is all about the $. The union bosses generally back and support the democrats with no regard to the democrats anti God ways. With the economy that the democrats have created many people are going to suffer and I have a hard time supporting groups whose only goal seems to be self centered. The country is in real danger of becoming a third world state. If we were to follow God’s way and repent and ask for God’s mercy we may find the unity we need to defeat satan’s evil plan that the democrats seem determined to follow. Let us all trust in God and follow his guidance. 🙏😇🙏

Dear Lord, we thank you for the end of this strike and freedom for the children.

We also thank you that if Biden’s team stepped in after he originally said they wouldn’t interfere in the strike; it was because of DeSantis’ wisdom in sending the National Guard to keep the Florida ports open which broke the back of the strike. [Please be careful when using the mainstream media as a source of information]

Amen. The truly noble and righteous of the land, regardless of party, don’t get the credit they deserve. May God richly bless Governor DeSantis and his family, plus the state of Florida – and may his legacy be vindicated.

There are so many sides to every issue we are called to pray about. Life is complicated in ways that I sometimes don’t even recognize at first – like the possibility of trafficked children being victims of even greater neglect and cruelty as a result of the strike. I’m thankful that Holy Spirit will pray through us, since we don’t always know how to pray as we ought to. I’m thankful that we serve a God who intervenes in the affairs of men to accomplish His will and purposes. I’m thankful that He is raising up intercessors to align with His will and purposes, and bring Heaven down to earth through their intercession. We cry, “Your will be done, Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven!!”

Keri I read the same thing regarding the children. Men could hear children screaming in box cars. The men who heard the screaming were furious. A day or two later I read the men had been given a raise (not the amount they were asking for but substantial) the strike had been delayed until January and the children were safe.
Thank God for answered prayer because I know people who prayed that all children would be rescued.
This is not part of the article, but I wonder if this stealing of children happened in the ravaged places of the Helene Hurricane, also.

Personally, we were concerned with the children that are being trafficked through these containers. I’ve heard various reports from different places. I’ve heard that there’s been reports of kids screaming in containers. I’ve heard that they have found them in dog kennels… A friend of mine had us praying that the strike would end so the kids wouldn’t suffocate stuck….

I was really at a loss for a moment. If the strike froze the movement of containers they would suffocate. If the strike ended – the kids could make it to the destinations…. 💔

I’m praying for God to expose their locations to the authorities, and set up better searches at the ports.

While all of this is a topic of great concern – please help me pray for the children hidden in the midst.

ILU a greedy lot they be. Ask them to pubibly print the contract terms. ALL of them. Having lived in Chas. SC for many years na been to Savannah port as as well. They are busy. Ther be some Port workers who choos NOT to be in thee Union. 62% over a ten yr period. Yes 1030 % raise annually; nyce werk if ye can get it. The Union contract also specifies tha Union Workerswork NO more tha 700 hrs per YEAR + almost 14 hrs per week. Unions long ago outlived theri usefulness. Pray for our Nation to arise above all this current day greed na grab ofr power na return to serving El Shaddai first.

The laborer is worthy of his hire. This issue isn’t resolved and media is glossing over the Truth of the effect on our economy

Stand Fast. The shaking has begun… your Christmas this year is guaranteed yo b we different
Maybe a focus on Jesus

Not the mat we rial goods stacked under the tree
What if there are none

Only Jesus. Now that’s a long look at our neighbors in Carolina and Appalacia who would be happy with a cup of clean water.
As you have done to the least of these…

I am grateful to our Lord for this quick end of the strike.
Although I agree, $39 for the work is not enough even the raise to $63 should be more.
There are other union employees earning more with less importance of their jobs.
