On Thursday, lawmakers departed Capitol Hill without plans to return until late February. Their departure all but guaranteed a partial shutdown that has crippled the Department of Homeland Security.

With no agreement in sight on funding for the agency, senators departed Washington after casting final votes on Feb. 12 and aren’t set to return until Feb. 23. The DHS is poised to shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has said a deal is “not close,” despite extensive negotiations between Democrats and Republicans on the issue over the past two weeks.
That sets the stage for, at minimum, a 10-day shutdown that will affect several major DHS subsidiaries, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), and others.
As the Times explains, Congress passed legislation funding 96% of the government through September 30 earlier this year. The legislation also included temporary funding for the DHS that was set to expire on February 13.
While lawmakers negotiated funding for the DHS, Democrats were quick to demand sweeping changes. Tensions between Minnesotans and ICE, a subsidiary of the department, led to calls for significant reform. Anti-ICE sentiment in Washington peaked following the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, protestors accused of obstructing and/or attacking immigration enforcement. Democrats responded to their deaths by digging in their heels and refusing to budge.
On Thursday, a last-ditch effort to fund the DHS for another year failed in a 52-47 Senate vote, with every Democrat except for Senator Fetterman voting against the measure. Senator Katie Britt’s measure to fund the department for another two weeks also failed.
The Times notes that ICE, despite being at the center of this dispute, will not be substantially affected by the shutdown, as Republicans previously set aside funding for the agency. The TSA and FEMA, however, will likely be greatly affected. According to the Times, essential TSA employees will have to continue working without pay for the duration of the shutdown.
As funding remains up in the air, let’s pray for this department!

This struggle to remove all Illgal Immgrantis in several states has become very un-supportive, there is a long list of numbers/ and names that were allowed to cross the border when Biden was in office. These illegals were asked to come to certain states and they would take them in. The spirit of crime, lawlessness, lies, violence has broken upon our land of America. People don’t realize that TSA officers that have under 2 years of experience (which are many) barely get paid more than minimum wage. Some has to sleep in their cars in order to be at work and not use gas to travel back and forth to work during the last shutdown. Many had to take out loans to pay rent but never got reimbursed for the interest accrued. They also had late fees and penalties that were never reimbursed from the delayed salary payments AND they do not get covered by insurance if they have a baby, need a surgery or hospitalization. This is unacceptable and the lawmakers need to get back to work to settle this. Their own pay should be stopped immediately until funding is back. Notice the funding hardly affects ICE at all (which is the Dems reason for the shutdown) it just penalizes the same people over and over. Please pray for the TSA and their families, they will suffer again.

Heavenly Father, we come to you in Jesus’ name asking that you move your hand and defeat our enemies who cause this shutdown and this constant attack on your David, we ask that you stretch thine hand against the wrath of our enemies and save us with your right hand. Lord, we know the enemy has infiltrated the Presidents administration and ask that you expose each and every one of them, even those who say they are there in your name. May you and you alone bring the people you want in his administration. Why does senate get to go on break when they haven’t finished the work. Don’t pay them and bring them back to Washington to complete the work .
Jan, you have heathens such as Schumer and many others in the Senate that destroy the integrity of the institution. Same for the House of Representatives.
A question I have is if the TSA and FEMA are not funded, what would happen if those employees would not show up for work? Would air travel cease because of the TSA folks did not show for work. What about if a disaster occurred in one of the states that Demon-crats live in and those FEMA employees didn’t show what would the Demon-crats do then.
If these people aren’t paid, then the Senators should not be paid.
Yes, air travel will be greatly affected if TSA don’t show up to work. Many didn’t during the last shutdown down because they had to choose between gas money and feeding their family. Many took second jobs and worked through exhaustion. People don’t realize they aren’t getting covered benefits when the Dems shut down funding and this is almost criminal.
The Lord Jesus Christ once said,”By their fruits you will know them.” Matthew 7:20. The Democrat party has become the party against what is right. Just look what they stand for. My prayer to the Father for them is that they will see the error of their ways and turn back to God and His will. Romans 13:1-5 says that God is for governing authorities and want us to obey them.
As in the time of Nehemiah, LORD help us your body to STAY ON THE WALLS! Give us fortitude to Keep building, stay focused with a trowel in one hand and The SWORD of the Word in the other! You have set in place a man of strength and great persistance, may you cover him and all the govt administration. Lord Jesus please let the people stand up and cry out for the members who are supposed to represent us, to return to their seats and finish their jobs. It is beyond unfair and an extreme sign of immaturity, as well as just disgraceful for them to have left without coming to any type of resolution.
