On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi tightened the Trump administration’s grip on D.C., rescinding the city’s protections for illegal immigrants and stripping power from Washington’s police chief.

Bondi’s order, titled “Restoring Safety and Security to the District of Columbia,” mostly took aim at sanctuary city policies within the nation’s capital, rescinding any order that limits how Metropolitan police officers can handle interactions and incidents with illegal immigrants.

She also stripped power from Metro Police Chief Pamela Smith by naming Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Terry Cole as the department’s “emergency police commissioner,” granting him all the “powers and duties vested” in the position.

Bondi also explicitly rescinded three orders issued by the Metro police within the past two years related to illegal immigration – the most recent one being an executive order issued by Smith earlier on Thursday limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

This follows President Trump’s executive actions on Monday. The President seized control of the nation’s capital, deploying the National Guard to help combat rampant crime.

Since the President took action on Monday, Fox notes that “federal law enforcement and the National Guard have been visible throughout the district.” Law enforcement reportedly arrested 45 people, 29 of whom were illegal immigrants, on Wednesday alone. Clearly, the President’s strategy to curb crime is working.

Meanwhile, following these Wednesday arrests, U.S. Marshals Service Director Gady Serralta said in a Thursday interview that D.C. should eliminate cashless bail and keep people in jail to crack down on crime.

[CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett] said that totally eliminating crime isn’t doable.

Serralta responded, “Well, I can tell you this: It’s definitely not going to be achievable if we continue the catch and release program that we have, right? We need to stop this cashless bail program that D.C. has. Because no sooner than the police officer puts them in the jail, some other police officer, maybe in the same shift, is picking them up for a different crime. And that needs to stop and that needs to stop now. That’s a legislative issue, something that the government here can take up.”

Director Serralta promised a “de-escalation” in Washington if the city can “make headway with bad guys staying in the jail, rather than walking right back out the other side.”
