According to Axios, “Bethany Christian Services, one of the U.S.’s largest adoption and foster agencies, said Monday it will begin offering services to LGBTQ parents nationwide, effective immediately, the New York Times reports.
Why it matters: It’s a major shift for the 77-year-old evangelical organization which has traditionally referred LGBTQ parents to other agencies. The change comes as cities and states increasingly require agencies to work with LGBTQ parents at the risk of losing government contracts.
What they’re saying: “We will now offer services with the love and compassion of Jesus to the many types of families who exist in our world today,” Chris Palusky, the organization’s president and chief executive wrote in an email per NYT. “We’re taking an ‘all hands on deck’ approach where all are welcome.”. . .
- Bethany facilitated 3,406 foster placements and 1,123 adoptions in 2019, according to NYT.
Bethany’s position statement since 2007 has been that “God’s design for the family is a covenant and lifelong marriage of one man and one woman.” . . . .
The big picture: Over 20% of same-sex couples with children have an adopted child, compared to 3% of straight couples, according to a 2016 report from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.
- Gay couples are also significantly more likely than straight couples to foster a child. . . .
According to The Christian Post, “Christian leaders have expressed disappointment after Bethany Christian Services, the largest Protestant adoption and foster agency in the United States, announced it will now be offering its services to LGBT couples.
On Monday, the Michigan-based group announced it will begin placing children in LGBT families nationwide. In a statement to The Christian Post, Nathan Bult, senior vice president of the historically evangelical organization, said that faith in Jesus is at the “core” of their mission,” but they are “not claiming a position on the various doctrinal issues about which Christians may disagree.”
“We acknowledge that discussions about doctrine are important, but our sole job is to determine if a family can provide a safe, stable environment for children. Unlike many other child and family welfare organizations, Bethany is committed to partnering with churches to find as many families for vulnerable children as possible, and we seek to place children with families that share our mission.
“For us to carry out our mission, we are building a broad coalition of Christians – finding families and resources for children in the greatest need. The people we serve deserve to know they are worthy of being safe, loved, and connected. The need is great, so we are taking an ‘all hands on deck’ approach.
“We believe that Christians with diverse beliefs can unify around our mission of demonstrating the love and compassion of Jesus. It’s an ambitious mission, and we can only accomplish it together.” . . . .
Bethany’s latest decision was met with disappointment from evangelical and Christian leaders.
Southern Baptist leader Al Mohler said that in choosing to open its services to LGBT couples, Bethany decided to “meet the demands of the moral revolutionaries.”
“The moral revolutionaries are now demanding that every single individual in this society every single institution, every single school, every single religious denomination, every single adoption, and foster care agency, must pivot … In this case, that means capitulation, it means absolute surrender to the demands of the LGBTQ community, and now we’re just talking about generalized the political left in the United States,” he said on a Tuesday edition of “The Briefing.”
“We are now seeing a head-on collision between organizations like Bethany Christian services that had been very committed to a Christian understanding of marriage and the family and human sexuality and gender … and the government.” . . .
“Christians have to understand: If you’re redefining marriage, if you’re redefining parent and family, you are redefining civilization,” he said. . . .
“No government should tell any ministry how to run their ministry, let alone violate deeply held biblical principles,” he added. . .
“Children need a dad and a mom in a healthy, biblical home. God’s Word is clear,” he tweeted.
“I am disappointed in this decision, as are many,” Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said. “This move will harm already existing efforts to enable faith-based orphan care ministries to serve the vulnerable without capitulating on core Christian convictions.” . . .
At the time, the agency announced that despite the decision, its beliefs have not changed.
“Bethany will continue operations in Michigan, in compliance with our legal contract requirements. The mission and beliefs of Bethany Christian Services have not changed,” the agency said at the time. “We are focused on demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ by serving children in need, and we intend to continue doing so in Michigan.”

This is what I wrote to Bethany Christian Services:
I am appalled at hearing that Bethany Christian Services will now offer adoption services to homosexual couples.
In what Godly realm is this OK?
Do you seriously think that homosexual couples are a stable environment when the Word of God CLEARLY says:
Romans 1:16-32
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

Do these descriptions of a debased mind sound like a safe, loving environment to you?
Furthermore, do you condone the fact that homosexuals will teach their adopted children their abominable lifestyle?
Homosexuals have chosen their path. They need to be ministered to and delivered from this demonic behavior. We aren’t doing them or the children ANY favors by bowing to their lifestyle!
Is your excuse for allowing homosexuals to adopt children based on money? That excuse will not fly with Almighty God. He CLEARLY says HE is the provider, and we know He deeply cares and will provide for these precious orphans.
Is your excuse based on pressure from the wicked and their threats? God’s Word says that if He be for us, who dare be against us! (Romans 8:31)
If you do not repent of this wicked decision, then I implore you to take the word “Christian” out of Bethany Christian Services. Obviously you are not, and your organization is not, following Jesus Christ.

It seems as if this organization is trying to satisfy the world for money, not God, our eyes are in the wrong place again. This is so evil!
Satan took my prayer away.He is at work here using Pelosi as a tool to try and bring as many souls to the gates of hell as possible. Please Lord if Thy will is to move this woman.Shake her heart to the udder most places from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. Make a change in her only You can do. Give her a tailspin push away from far left anti-Christian, anti-American, anti-constitutional actions of Democratic Party.

Lord God please open the eyes of those at the head of Bethany “Christian” services to see and be reminded of what you have called us to believe and stand our ground on your principles that are given in your word. No deviation from the truths that God has given can be changed to meet a persons faithless desires. Have mercy on these for they truly do not know what they have just agreed to do.
I am very disappointed they sold out to the LGBT agenda. Their nice coat of Jesus paint doesn’t hide this. What will happen if every Christian agency caves in to their demands? We then won’t have any true Christianity left!
Was this a cave due to their “bottom line” – do this, or lose government funds? Where are our priorities..our faithfulness to Biblical principles?
I want the safe past back – a time when Biblical values were right, and the ideas that opposed the Bible were called sin.
This is so sad. BCS is sacrificing the well-being of children & trying to disguise it as caring. The Bible is crystal clear about what a family looks like: this is not a doctrinal issue subject to interpretation. Truth is absolute: it does not change given the current culture. These children will grow up in an environment that celebrates a sinful lifestyle, which is not “safe” for the child’s mental/spiritual health. The home may be loving, stable, & provide financial stability; but BCS is supposed to be concerned w/their moral & spiritual well-being.
Father, we appreciate the work this organization has done over the last 70+ years. Please give the leaders at Bethany the courage to acknowledge their error in judgement & to repent. Help them to rely solely on Your wisdom & not their own or that of this world. Until they do, we ask You to graciously protect these children from ANY situation that would hinder them from having a relationship w/You. We know that every child is equally precious in Your sight, & we thank you for Your love. We ask these things in Jesus’ name
What a disappointment. Please do not state that you are following God’s ways when He specifically mandates that marriage is between a man and a woman. God will not be mocked. Think of the harm you will do these children. Bethany Services has caved to leftist agenda. Please take Christian out of your name.
This is so sad. I was adopted at 6 months 59 years ago when many babies were available. I always felt chosen by my mom and dad who could not have children. I have young friends now who cannot conceive for various reasons and have spent a fortune on adopting in and out of the country. The largest agency in So Cal is in LA where the majority of “couples” are gay and have plenty of money to purchase a child. My prayer has been that (Christian) crisis pregnancy centers would give these women the option of adoption as a wonderful alternative for their child. I believe it is better to leave the government out and make it a private thing between birth parent(s) and married couples desperate to have a child.

MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE ADOPTED TWO CHILDREN AS BABIES WHO ARE NOW CHRISTIANS AND GOOD CITIZEN’S OF AMERICA AND RAISING THEIR CHILDREN TO BE THE SAME.

Bottom line, how many of us would have chosen homosexual or trans parents if we had to be w placed in foster care as children? I’m sure many of us would would have selected heterosexual parents. Unfortunately, children in the case of this agency will not be given a choice for Bethany is making this choice for them similar to a secular foster/adoption care agency. Exposing children to what goes on in this abominable (homosexual) culture is seldom discussed. According to scriptures we as adults are responsible for protecting the soul and spirits of these little ones (Matt.18:6; Luke 17:2; Mark 9:42).
Besides praying for the wisdom of Bethany Center to repent and reverse their policy I am going to select several true Christian foster care agency and not only pray but support them. Amen.
And they all fall down! God help us and forgive us for the things we do!

So basically you now condone gay/lesbian behavior and worst of all you will put children into a sinful upbringing. Very disappointing. God says to love sinners but NOT condone their sin.

The Church must draw a line in the sand and know that the Word of God is TRUTH. Whose TRUTH do we believe, the TRUTH set forth by an organization or THE WORD. Jesus is the Way, The Truth and The Life and we can stand upon what He says in the Word or on the policies we make in the name of compassion. He was compassionate, yet He lived and followed the Word. One who stays true to The Word will suffer and be persecuted because of their stand, which will be in conflict with mans laws. “Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you”, leading, guiding and helping us to stand upon TRUTH and He has given to us His Holy Spirit to empower us to Stand. Could it be that many of these organizations such as Bethany have allowed modernism to creep into their policy and change of heart for “a little leaven will do it”. Hitler said to tap into the emotions for an audience. The gay movement is appealing to the basic sense of fairness and guilt. They are using our children to appeal to our emotional sense of justice and love. The goal is to demonize the Christian belief in the authority of God and all who oppose will be demonized. They demonized Christ yet He fixed His eyes on the joy set before Him. Pray that God’s people stand in faith and the authority of His Word. Many will be deceived and turn. Come Lord Jesus Come, yet give us the strength to be faithful to the end.

I am reading some prayers that are bothersome to me when I consider many Biblical passages. If you read G Robles’ article today on Christians canceling each other, she mentions the Scriptural times to separate from a fellow believer. 1Cor 5 says to avoid fellowship w a sinning so-called brother. This principle for a local Body is also true for parachurch entities who represent our Jesus & who are supposed to be partnering in the holy & true things with Him & without compromise. (These words about partnering, fellowship, agreement, are used in 2 Cor 6:14-16 where we are commanded to not engage with unbelievers in practices promoting sin. “We have renounced* the things hidden because of shame…not adulterating the Word of God, but by the manifestation of truth…..” (2 Cor 4:2) Bethany is in sin as they are jeopardizing children’s lives! We don’t pray for protection against the evil all the while supporting it! If Bethany has been asked to change this policy back to the truth regarding their doctrine of sin on the matter of sexual perversion & its judgments, (repent), yet they do not, we should Not be encouraging Christians to continue adopting through them as that would just maintain their sinful practice of promoting this destructive abomination! Find a holier option! Nor should we be excusing this simply because they are deceived or rebelling; their motives (& we do not know if that is possibly fear, greed, root of bitterness in the hearts of the leadership, or plain old rebellion against God’s very clear warnings on this destructive lifestyle…..) only He knows; we are to judge the behavior as righteous or not. I am Not saying to be unloving to anyone…always showing agape love, civility & grace but Always, Always standing firm in the truth.
God wants to bring His healthy, holy shame (conviction) to this organization & to the people caught in this lie. The more we separate from the sinful practices of this world, the more we will be subjected to its unfair consequences. But as 1Peter 3 says: keep* (guard!) a good conscience so that…those who revile your good behavior (choices!) in Christ may be put to shame. By our maintaining a pure undefiled devotion to desiring obedience in All Biblical teaching, & first Knowing! what the Book says, we will not stray into compromise. Guarding our conscience is Vital. The more we give in to evil’s subtle or blatant ways, the more the conscience becomes defiled & the spiral downward into more darkness.
Lord please convict Bethany that this is sinful thus harmful. If hearts have become deceived, hardened, greedy…if minds have strayed from Your truth & turned aside to lies, If feelings of compassion have been twisted by the enemy toward unrighteouness, if fear…whatever the reason, please turn this around & cause them to see the harm & its potential, cause Your light to shine in hearts, & bring purity back. Remove any leaders who will not repent. Raise up & bless other agencies esp if Bethany remains stubborn. Discipline Your Body where needed oh Lord that we may be lights for You in this very dark world. In Jesus Name Amen

Thh this is nothing less than capitulating to the type of behavior and morals that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The type of behavior that will destroy this country. How can a Christian agency stoop to that level? At what point do we say enough? At what point do we stand up and say this is what we believe and we will not back down? My prayer is that the decision will be reversed understand will be taking that a scriptural. God will not bless the nation that turns against him in this nation is rapidly turning against him.
Lord, we repent for lack of care to orphans. Father, we, the church have not stepped up. God open our eyes and our hearts to how you would like us to live this out, whether it be to foster, adopt, or support others who desire to do so. Lord, I pray that you would open doors for believers who are patiently waiting to adopt. I know they are out there and that they are still waiting on miracles of the children that you have planned to join their families. God, would you break down any red tape that is keeping Christ-following families waiting for their children to foster or adopt. Set fires in hearts for fostering and adoption. Reignite dreams and calls to adoption that you planted in hearts long ago that have been put on the back burner or where the enemy has convinced that it isn’t possible. All things are possible with you.
Lord, let this adoption agency be a light to people entering into the process. I pray that this will be an entry point into your kingdom. Father, speak identity into the hearts of babies and children so that no matter who they are placed with, they know their worth, they know their identity, they know YOU, Lord. Forgive us for criticizing but not stepping up to meet the need. Forgive me. Jesus, what the enemy means for his plans, you will turn to good . We love you, Jesus. Amen!

My Father’s will is of concern because they were lost, had no covenant, no one else to turn to, and things had only been getting worse for them.
I sat there full of compassion, interceding, in the clerk’s office of the courthouse, crying on the inside, for the scene having taken place in front of me, in the year 2015.
Two he’s dressed as two she’s seeking to divorce, debating over who did what when and where.
The outcome, I know not, only the work of a perfect GOD having sent an intercessor to do a part in the Kingdom, trusting in HIM.

I’ve read many of the comments on this article, but my thoughts and prayers for Bethany are different. I pray that Bethany can be the “salt and light” for these individuals. I pray that they never loose sight of the strength and power of our great God. I pray that Bethany will be great witnesses for Christ and shine light in a dark place. I pray for protection, wisdom & discernment for the children as they grow into adults. I pray for Godly Mentors and Leaders for these Children. Children are some of the greatest miracles on the planet and they are very resilient. Our God is still working miracles. One of the greatest miracles is a newborn baby.
It’s hard to deny the existence of our loving Father when holding a newborn baby. Let us not cast judgement but pray for one another. The enemy comes to divide us. We need to be more united than ever before.
This announcement is very disturbing….I’m very disappointed in their decision to now stay with their original statement of Faith, clearly now their stance goes against God’s Word/plan for mankind.
Lord, Our nation is sinking deeper into a pit of lies and compromise! May Your voice be louder and stronger than the “voices” that Bethany is bowing to. May You raise up NEW leadership for Bethany that will boldly follow You and Your Word. Put a guard over other organizations that may consider also following the “world” versus following You. May You have mercy on us, O Lord!

Sorry to say that before you can “claim”,a higher percentage of GLBT adoptions, one must look closer at the statistics, which I intend. Statistics can be made to say whatever the statistician wants to portray.
In addition, again, my apologies to those too sensitive to this issue, but GLBT relationships have fewer options to pander to their “urge” (need?) for children. Of course adoption will rank right up there statistically (see above), as well as coercion in some (most?) cases of the dissolution of the original marriages that supported the children involved.
Soon, with the changing landscape (by design?) of consent for minors, not only will poly-amory become acceptable and justified, but worse, promoted pedophilia? Instead of opening our eyes to debauchery, May our (and their) eyes be opened to the Christ who gave all.

I served for 7 years on the Board of our local Bethany office, my heart breaks reading of this misguided decision.
Proverbs 3:5-6. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
What kind of an organization would call itself Christian while upholding this abominable practice? I’ll ask this question also. What kind of a man, such as the one currently occupying the Oval Office, would call himself a Christian while he is in agreement with this abominable practice? Where God is absent, so is His law.
Every child deserves a loving and safe home and dear Lord, this organization believes they are providing for that. I pray in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, that each child placed through this organization will have Your guarding angels about their bodies, their minds and their emotions. That no lies of the enemy can take root and formulate in these young lives and minds and emotions. Father, we pray for loving, Christian homes for these children. If the children are placed in homes with ungodly lifestyles, we declare the BLOOD OF JESUS SHALL CLEANSE AND SALVATION SHALL COME TO THAT HOUSEHOLD.

This is very dishearten. They need to lose the name christiann, Because this is not what christians do. In the Father’s eyesight it’s a Father and a Mother and not two men or two women, the children will be very confused.
I pray and believe the Lord to deal with their hearts because they are not a great representation of who He is and what our Father stands for.
The devil is wanting us to cave in to the demonic ideology connected to sexuality. I am hoping more people and organizations will stand rather than cave. Now is not the time for Christian organizations to compromise their belief’s. We as believers need to stand on the word of God as a testimony to an unbelieving world. We can’t be the salt and light we are called to be if we are not willing to live out the gospel in every aspect of our lives.
Christians, start adopting from Bethany if you want to keep the alphabet community from doing so. They open their homes, we should consider expanding our households even more so. We are the best option but we aren’t adopting enough. I pray that the Lord will release Christian hearts to take in the helm of adoption and fostering. Starting with me.

SHAME AND TURNING AWAY FROM GOD
Bethany’s decision is egregious. Would they place a child in the home of a known pornographer, embezzler, drug trafficer? Do they not know what the Q stands for in lgbtq? It stands for queer and encompasses every sexually perverted behavior to include pediophilia. The church must live the child as much as the sinner. Tell them the truth, mentor them out of their sin, but do not give them permission to instill behaviors God calls abominable, upon children. Bethany or any other service enables the growth and acceptance of such abominations with this move. Do we obey God or do we fall to pressure if the evil one.

So disheartening, but not a surprise. Father we ask for supernatural protection over the children and their hearts. Let your voice be louder than any other. Please let us not cast shame. Bethany’s decision is disturbing, for sure, and I do not support it at all. Let us instead feel/grieve this kind of caving to pressures of our current culture, and pray the Fear of the Lord would become greater than their Fear of Man.

I just called them and voiced how disappointed I am that they would compromise. This, to me, is right up there with abortion in the sense the children have no voice to decide who they go to/with just as babies in the womb have no voice.

They can no longer claim “Christian” values or that they provide a “safe and stable” environment. If you look at rates of violence, drug use, suicide, and early death among people living homosexual or “other” such non-heterosexual lifestyles, you can never call that a safe or stable environment.
Nature itself, denies homosexuals children. Why subject children to an unsafe and unstable environment that is unnatural?

This is such sad news. So hurtful and disrespectful to the Christian community, let alone to God. What a slap in the face. Have they not considered the struggles and obstacles the children will be having? How are the children ever going to respect that God made man and woman to be together? They have done no good by those children to believe in what’s right. They are protecting nothing. Love and Prayers to all who will be affected by this, now and in the future.
This is extremely sad,indeed. Actually, they have unsulted and turned their back on God by essentially saying their decision outranks God’s say on this matter!
There is a lack of faith on their part, (whoever made this decision), because they do not trust God to see them through their present dilemna. God does not honor disobedience.They need to stand on the Word of God, now, or else their compromise with the Devil will just compound. Welcome to a world of compromise. Calling good evil, and evil good. This is very disturbing because innocent, vulnerable children are the ones who will be effected. This is a spiritual attack against this next generation. indoctrination at a young age is at the heart of what this equality act is about. We must know what the Word of God says on these issues, because we will be tested. Do we love and reach out to those who are confused about their identity? Absolutely! Many have suffered physical and sexual abuse and have been lied to by the enemy. We need to cry out to God and have His heart of love without compromise.
As believers our identity is in Christ Jesus. It’s time to cry out for an outpouring of Holy Spirit upon the sexually broken and confused. It is no longer church as usual, everything that can be shake will be shaken. We have authority over the enemy and must take our rightful place in intercession. Father God, grant us boldness to speak the truth in love, may we stand on your Word unwavering. Awaken your church in America to be salt and light. As persecution comes against us, give us your love for our enemies, knowing they are broken and deceived by the father of lies. We rebuke the spirit of leviathan, Jezebel, witchcraft, whoredom, unclean spirits in Jesus name. I decree and declare that Jesus is Lord over our nation and over our children. So sad for the children who will be placed in what God defines as an abomination. I have personally witnessed where many of these children who grew up with homosexuals/lesbians as parents are either agnostic or atheist. They were exposed to the unnatural plan of God and ultimately came to view such relationships as normal.
Of course the data shows that homosexual/lesbian couples adopt at a higher rate. Duh, they are not able to naturally produced between themselves.
Father God, forgive us for allowing this matter to get so far that now that so-called Christian organizations are complicit with satan’s plan to configure Your definition of what You deemed as family: a mother and a father. We pray that more heterosexual couples would volunteer to be foster parents. We pray that children placed in these situations would be protected from You-mind, soul and spirit. May they have a personal encounter with you to truly know what love is. As we get closer to the days of Lot, may Holy Spirit infiltrate the hearts of those in the Body of Christ to convict them of Your righteousness. We know judgement is around the corner and it is only Your mercy that is holding it back. In Jesus Name and authority we pray.

What a deference it made in my life that my parents were wonderful Christians and raised me with Christian values. This news grieves me for future
Children who need the same.
My grandson was adopted into our family over 12 years ago through the Bethany Christian Services! He has brought such joy to our lives! It grieves my heart that this same organization is now going to be placing innocent children into such homes!
We do not hate homosexual people but they are in darkness and deception! They need God’s truth and love! These little ones need to be placed with a mother and a father! May God open the eyes of the leaders of this company to the truth!
My heart also aches because there are not more Christian families open to adopting! God open our eyes and give us your heart for others!

Gods word says marriage is between a man and a woman, to have children, and a mother and a father to raise them. Teach them to live a Christian life and stand strong in faith. It makes me very sad when our government officials, for fear of losing their positions, agree that this is a new way of life. What they call the love and compassion of Jesus Christ is NOT!
Jesus only did that which He saw His Father doing and lived a life submitted and representative of His Father…you see Me, you have seen the Father.
In the beginning…God created them male and female; male and female created He them!
If we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, we will keep His commandments and represent God’s love, not our own humanistic, man-centered and defined concept of love which isn’t love at all.
We love all people, but bowing a knee to a contradiction of Gods word always has consequences and this decision is not a wise one.
Oh God! Help us! So many are losing their way! Bethany Christian Services has caved. They have gone the way
of the Boy Scouts, and we know what happened to that organization. This is grievous news to me.
Ultimately, they will have to answer to the Lord God and Creator, not to the government, not to the Church.
I guess they’re just plain Bethany Services now. And we are all affected gravely.
