Antisemitic Violence Hits in Australia and U.S.
This past weekend brought twin tragedies on opposite sides of the world — a terror-related mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, and a campus shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S. Both events have left communities in mourning and triggered urgent calls for review of public safety and antisemitic policies.

On Sunday evening, December 14, a mass shooting unfolded during a Jewish community event called “Chanukah by the Sea” at Bondi Beach in Sydney, one of Australia’s most famous coastal locations. Australian authorities described the incident as a terrorist attack motivated by antisemitism, targeting people gathered to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah.
Police say two gunmen — a father and his adult son — opened fire on the crowd just before 7 p.m. local time. One of the attackers was killed by police at the scene, and the other is in custody in critical condition. Around 16 people, including a child, were killed, with dozens more injured and hospitalized, among them several police officers. Victims ranged in age from children to seniors.
In a dramatic moment captured on video and reported in international coverage, a civilian bystander intervened and helped disarm one of the shooters, potentially saving lives.
Jewish leaders and community members both in Australia and abroad have expressed deep grief and solidarity, emphasizing the need to confront rising antisemitism and protect public celebrations of faith.
On Sunday night, President Trump offered his condolences to the families as well as honored the man who disarmed a shooter on video.
On Saturday afternoon, December 13, a shooting occurred inside a classroom building at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exam week. According to campus and law enforcement reports, the incident took place at approximately 4:00 p.m. EST, where a review session for a class was underway.
The shooter also “yelled something” before carrying out his horrific act of violence. Some eyewitnesses alleged the remark was in Arabic. Two people were killed, and at least nine others were injured in the mass shooting. The attack originated in Jewish Professor Rachel Friedberg’s classroom during her course titled, “Judaic Studies”. Brown University canceled all remaining finals, assignments, and academic events for Sunday as the community grappled with the aftermath.
“I want to just pay my respects to the people — unfortunately, two are no longer with us — at Brown University. Nine injured, and two are looking down on us right now from heaven,” Trump said.
The Bondi Beach and Brown University shootings — though different in scale — both underscore continuing global concerns about antisemitic attacks.
As investigations continue, officials in both countries have pledged support for victims’ families and survivors while reviewing safety protocols and legislative measures aimed at preventing future tragedies.
At the time of reporting, the Brown University shooter is still at large.

This is truly sad, and just plain wrong. No one should lose their life because of their ethnic group. There is NO place in today’s world for anti- Semitism. Lord Jesus, by Your grace, please put a hedge of protection around all Jewish people around the world. Please keep them from all harm. Thank You Jesus.
I am saddened about all this. Gods Chosen, Christens and Jew are being attacked. Satan is having a Field Day! God is not mocked. He is watching and waiting! One day, every knee will bow. Come, Lord Jesus!!!

In the Sydney Australia shooting the ‘civilian bystander ‘ who disarmed one of the gunmen and potentially saved lives, who is now recovering from several gunshot wounds, is a Muslim gentleman. An Australian citizen he migrated from Syria some years ago. One of the gifts of a non-discriminatory immigration policy.
Father God, come in Jesus’ peace and truth and protect the people you call and choose.
Praying our Lord’s peace from Heaven to Earth. Be careful of labeling, though, the Islamic Jihadist doctrine isn’t just antisemitic. They are trained to violence against Christians, too.
