I Prayed have prayed
Lord, You said You had ‘concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left.’ And you care for New York City, too. Please save our city!
Reading Time: 6 minutes

Sunday morning last November, I was walking east on 43rd Street on my way from my apartment on 10th avenue to New York City’s Grand Central Station. I was planning to take the commuter train north from Manhattan to the city of White Plains, where my husband and I have attended church for more than 20 years.

As I crossed 9th avenue, I saw a little group of people gathered in the middle of the sidewalk. Usually when I see a group like this, I cross to the other side of the street to pass. But for some reason, I got ornery and said to the Lord silently, “Well, this is my city too!” as I passed between the members of the group. They were concluding a drug deal.

A block later, I crossed between two New York police officers busily thumbing their smart phones. After I gave my customary thanks to them, I said, “By the way, there is a drug deal happening a block back,” using my own thumb to point. “Okay, we got it,” one officer said as they bobbed their heads at me, still leaning back on the scaffolding encasing the building they were near and holding their phones at the ready.

Maybe they did “have it.” Maybe they were in the midst of a sting. I had seen reports of several drug arrests made recently in my neighborhood, known cheerily as “Hell’s Kitchen,” home of Irish gangsters back in the day.

But if the cops didn’t “have it” or had no intention of “having it,” I would not have been surprised. It has been difficult to do any policing in New York City (NYC) where politicians have “defunded” the police department and district attorneys — including newly installed District Attorney Alvin Bragg — have declined to prosecute many offenses.

As mayor of NYC, William de Blasio’s record on crime control was mixed, but relations with the NYPD started rockyand never recovered. Things got worse when pent-up anxiety and anger related to the Covid 19 lockdowns and the killing of George Floyd in May 2020 erupted in looting, pillaging and rioting. Human cost aside, the riots were among the most expensive in U.S. history. While insured costs of the riots soared to $2 billion across the nation, early estimates put the toll on NYC at tens of millions.

But City Hall reaction to Black Lives Matter (BLM) and other protestors’ demands cost New York City its 600-member anti-crime unit, a plain clothes unit specifically charged with recovering illegal guns and preventing local crime, such as burglary or street crime. This move, along with “defunding the police” by $1 billion, reportedly drove shootings up by 127% in 2020.

Another significant factor in driving up crime rates was the relocation of thousands of homeless people from shelters in other boroughs into mid-town Manhattan hotels rendered empty by the Covid-19 shutdown. Intended to curb the spread of the virus — moving vulnerable people from overcrowded shelters into unused tourist hotels — the scheme failed to account for the sudden influx of drug addicted and mentally ill into a few square blocks.  More than 20% of the relocated homeless people were jammed into locations in Hell’s Kitchen and the nearby Broadway District. With theatre shut down, Times Square returned to the milieu of ‘70s and ‘80s, when it was a haunt for drug and sex sales. In mid-2021, assaults and robberies in the area once known for family friendly musicals shot up 185% and 173% respectively, compared with a citywide increase of 8% in assaults and a drop in robberies of 5%, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) statistics.

Hope for conquering crime sprang up with the election of Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer. But his installation in the first week of January has not yet had the desired effect on crime. Year over year, crime has climbed in 72 of 77 precincts.  The overall crime index for January 2022 increased 38.5% compared with January 2021. Only five precincts across New York’s boroughs have seen rates hold steady or dip slightly compared with 2021; of these only one in Manhattan — the 22nd Precinct encompassing Central Park — held steady with 2021. The New York Post quoted one officer saying, “Only the squirrels are safe.” Grand larceny, burglaries, felonious assault and robbery lead the crime surge.

Even long-time police critic Rev. Al Sharpton noted the surge, complaining about how local pharmacies lock up even relatively low cost items such as toothpaste to prevent thievery. Sharpton even hinted at breaking with the liberal leniency with prosecutions during an interview with MSNBC in early February. Sharpton told Joe Scarborough, ”There are those that are concerned, including me, about overloading the system and the jails with petty crime. But at the same time, you cannot have a culture where people are just, at random, robbing and stealing.’’

The White House also registered some concern. Newsmax quoted Joe Biden telling Adams in a meeting early February, “The answer is not to abandon our streets. The answer is not to defund the police. It’s to give you the tools, the training, the funding to be partners, to be protectors.” Biden joins the growing number of liberal politicians trying to distance themselves from the “defund the police” movement as a new poll indicates most Americans blame this movement for crime surges around the nation.

Rhetoric aside, New York City residents feel abandoned. One of my neighbors — a woman in her eighties — does not even go down the block alone anymore. She reported how a friend, a man in his sixties, recently sustained black eyes in a robbery with a younger man. Another neighbor refused to allow her 16-year-old son walk from 43rd street to 34th street to evening fencing lessons. She drove him the few blocks because of the dangerous streets.

If the streets seem risky, the subways — always dirty and smelly — have become a sort of Russian roulette to traverse. Subway crime soared 65% in the first two weeks of January 2022 alone. The week of February 10, a man tried to rape a woman in mid-morning on the E train in lower Manhattan. Several other assaults — including shoves into the paths of oncoming trains — have captured headlines, driving fear levels even higher.

Many of those arrested for the high profile crimes have been identified as homeless and mentally ill. As noted above, centralizing the population in a few neighborhoods may have driven up the opportunity for crime — certainly more subway stations are available for entry in mid-town Manhattan. But the sheer numbers of homeless in New York City — more than 65,000 compared with the next highest population city Los Angeles which nears 18,000 in homeless — escalates the crime situation. Not only are there more troubled people and drug addicts, but a high number of crimes are committed against this vulnerable population.

Other vulnerable populations suffer, as well. The NYPD reported a 96% increase in hate crimes in 2021 (538) compared with 2020 (275). While crimes against Asians (133 in 2021 vs. 30 in 2020) drove much of the increase, attacks against Jewish people remain highest (207 in 2021 compared to 134 in 2020). Anti-semitism continues to climb: Hate crimes against Jewish people soared to 15 in January 2022 compared with four in January 2021 — a 275% increase.

If these statistics were not concerning enough, lobbyists and politicians are readying plans for a NYC casino presence. While that battle is shaping up here on earth, it is just a part of the war raging in the heavenlies.

Last year, IFA published a prophetic warning about judgment coming to NYC for its many sins against the Lord. Despite the certainty of God’s correction for NYC, He provided hope and clear direction for intercessors. Please join in this prayer as posted last year:

What to do? Pray for repentance of this city – join your prayer to those who already seek Me about these sins – and there are many (who seek Him).

Pray for the protection of the faithful/remnant as judgment occurs.

Worship with intensity – yes- personal and corporate worship – Yes, at services and special times of corporate worship and praise.

Prepare for the Harvest – Are you ready as My church to catch, to glean? Reflect on what is needed for those I draw to this body of believers.

What are the steps for those who come questioning about Me and if I am the answer they seek?

No doubt about this Harvest! I am, even now, preparing My holy messengers to come to that city and call people out – Some will find this faithful body and need guidance toward Me – Prepare what you will do! Ready yourselves both spiritually and practically.

            Amen & Amen.

One thing of note is that early in 2020 into that summer a LOT of the wealthy in NYC left. They bought homes in CT and other states and I read of many of them using cash to get into those new places them faster. The past year I’ve noticed that the real estate in NYC has been catering more towards the youth, college kids and young families to buy what was vacated. I keep feeling that these young people have no idea what’s coming in the natural or the spiritual. So even though we know that NYC has a lot of bad stuff going on please note that there are people from other states and countries moving in , and have been the past almost two years, and in a sense they will reap what the people who moved out of the city sowed. Please God remember mercy when it comes to your judgement.

Oh Lord, thank you for Joyce. Her compassion, Your compassion! Drips through every bit of her description with the sadness and even understandable anger. Thank you that so many are beginning to see the wisdom of loving their city in Jesus name, because You love the people in our cities. You don’t just see the ‘dens of iniquity’, but the captives You died to set free. Poppa I agree with Mrs D, forgive us for not praying in love for the sinners we see and hear, how fast we forget where You rescued us from. Cleanse us and help us remember Whose we are, help us fight the spiritual enemies and love wisely, well and without hypocrisy those captives You place in our path. Give favor, to let lies be exposed for lies and for us to be brave in living Your truth, brave and kind when speaking the truth when You give opportunity. Glory to Your name, Jesus, King who is Love❣️

Father, I ask You to forgive us where we have been arrogant, judgmental “intercessors” for not interceding with the same kind of compassion for New York City that we would want others to pray over ALL the people in our respective cities. Father, help us to see the hypocrisy in our words so that as we speak and pray, we would be motivated by a heart filled with Your grace, mercy, compassion and long-suffering. Father, we ask You to forgive us for not leading submitted lives consistently and intentionally manifesting the holiness and righteousness of our Beloved SAVIOR. Father, we truly want to honor Your Name, Your Ways, Your Character and Your Will and we invite and truly desire to embrace the transforming power of Holy Spirit so that others see and have examples all around of lives that are totally surrendered to You.

We choose to lay aside those judgments that reflect our lack in understanding the challenges facing those who are in desperate need of seeing Your light and love in our ways and words. We would be diligent to present Your goodness (including Your non-compromising discipline) in order to see great change in our personal attitudes and relationships so that those relationships model respect, honor, integrity, a willingness to accept responsibility for our misguided actions and unkind words. Father, we recognize that by consciously putting on the helmet of salvation (and NEVER removing it), we are focusing on those redemptive thoughts that are sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing our minds with discernment and wisdom. As we sit at home or are “out in the world,” we are well-girded (solidly garbed) in TRUTH because we’ve spent significant (and fruitful) times alone with You and Your Word so that our garments are unsullied by imaginations we neglected to cast down and thoughts we have failed to take captive in obedience to all that You have spoken to and implanted in our hearts. We know that our daily testimony of Your on-going presence in our lives is the gospel in action and we are well-shod with a word in season that bespeaks of Your on-going involvement in the lives of Your beloved children, as we seek and defer to Your guidance, instruction, and discipline.

We are not condoning the sin, the wickedness, the deception, destruction and evil intent of those whose lives are running contrary to Your planned destinies for them and we seek Your wisdom, inspiration, creativity, correction, and deliverance for those in need of Your intervention. We recognize that poor, selfish and often greedy and misguided decisions have caused some among us to dishonor others and disgrace ourselves. And, we recognize that the bulk of the populations in our cities and New York City in particular are people who desire to live quiet, peaceable, responsible and respectful lives. We call forth those among them who love You, love life and love their cities to be the leaders to bring dignity back to our country by doing it in GODly relationships with neighbors, co-workers, those in the neighborhood markets and eateries and other places of community gathering (yes, even NOW). Father GOD, You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and soundness of mind. I pray for courage, boldness, strength and confidence as we respond in YOUR likeness to and for YOU our KING and for Your Glory. In the Holy Name of JESUS we pray. So be it!

Dear Heavenly Father,
I ask that you would bring wise solutions to those in government and church leadership in how to bring people out of bondage. I pray that healings would break out for those who are struggling with mental health and those who are struggling with addiction would be set free from that. I pray that the gospel would go forth and that there would be a great repentance and turning away from death to life. I ask that you would raise up people to be a light in the city and I thankyou that the harvest is ripe.

The Lord is saying again, “prepare. Have your place of business and your home secured even as those in hurricane country prepare. There are wars and rumors of wars. The faithful prepare for Spiritual battle as well as the physical which is sure to come. Since no city is prepared to care for the marginalized, know the Father Will take them home at the right time, even those families forced to sleep in the subway to survive.
Pay attention now as the Holy Spirit hovers over seeking those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Tsunami comes in different guises

We can never give up! God is able to move in the most unlikely places. Jesus died for New York City and He loves every drug addict, every sinner and He responds to the cries of His people. Revival is coming it is on its way as we pray, seek, worship and believe on His Name. To God be the Glory!

I grew up in Spanish Harlem until we moved to Los Angeles when I was 11. The only time this wonderful city had a real chance to thrive was when the great Rudy Giuliani was the Mayor of New York. He had no tolerance for crime, and stop and frisk, and broken window arrests brought over 90% of daily crime to a halt.

The situation now is solely because of corrupt Democrat leadership; like in other once beautiful cities in America. My Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Atlanta, and too many others to mention are suffering under the oppressive weight of EVIL!

ABBA Father, we ask for Your Mercy in these horrific days of suffering. We need Your Presence and Power to cleanse our land of corrupt leadership, idol shepherds in the church, and a populace that is adrift in willful sin. May a Great Awakening happen by Your Grace- that Healing, Salvation, and Deliverance would transform our Nation, our Continent, and our Hemisphere into a shining light of Your Holy Spirit Outpouring, in Jesus’ Name, AMEN!

So agree with you as lawless is increasing getting back to preaching the Gospel and a prophetic word from God to Jonah is needed . REPENT and turn to GOD for HE is returning very soon!

Today for the first time I was listening to a new song called NINEVEH by Brooke Ligertwood so Nineveh must be on God’s heart for NYC and the nations of the world.

Thank you for the article opening our eyes to the condition of NYC sins being like soddom and gomorrah yet God had mercy on Nineveh when they heard truth fasted and prayed and repented and turned to God. We pray they turn like Nineveh and not burn like Soddom and Gommorah.

Listen to the Song Nineveh awesome words even asking us to see where is the Nineveh in me

No one and no city is beyond God’s mercy and redemption. Jonah said of God, “I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” Nothing is impossible with God. Prayers for revival, return to Him and with that peace, safety and prosperity for the people of New York City – that they can live, work and worship in peace and with streets safe for everyone. “If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray” http://www.mtothe5th.wordpress.com

I believe we should be praying nonstop for NYC. I truly believe this is related to the time they erected the Temple Of Baal and I think the mayor (maybe wrong) and all the people that showed up and payed homage to this demonic temple, released the horrors that come with it! Temple of Baal was showcased in NYC September of 2016! There’s plenty on the web of the horrors that will follow if they unveiled and unleashed this demonic arch! This needs strong prayer warriors! Come against the powers of Baal in YESHUA’S name amen 🙏

What a wonderful inspiring mind and heart provoking article. Yes, repentance for the sins of this city. Like Daniel we can and must come before the Lord and repent for these sins. Not only for New York City but for our city and our neighborhoods. And yes, we must prepare ourselves to be in place to minister to those who are called out. The Lord is so busy behind the scenes to bring about this harvest. Are we busy preparing ourselves? Are we wrapped up in life-union with our redeemer, healer, sanctifier, gifts (of the Holy Spirit) giver, or are we wrapped up in ourselves and the world? Come more fully into our lives, Lord Jesus, that none would be lost. That You might be glorified.

Deuteronomy 9:10 Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by the finger of God with the exact words that the LORD spoke to you out of the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly.
Luke 11:20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Dear Heavenly Father, You know the origin of this problem. My prayer is for You to place Your finger on NYC….on the faithful, on the lawless, on each life there. May Your pressure be felt by all. For those who love You, peace and for those who don’t, may they cry out for peace in the Name of Christ, the Son of the living God. I pray in the Name of Jesus Christ. I was going to add a prayer, But I find the one by Michael here truly inspired and most worthy of my repeating it. Our GLORIOUS HOPE -the same one that changes our godless, “right in our own eyes” – lives, WILL bring His LIGHT into all lives who have even “cracked” the door open to Him…for, He is faithful to save all the lost that come to him. Keep sharing the truth of Freedom in Christ, we cannot often see the soul of a man/woman, and we will trust His word will complete the purpose for which it was sent !!! Bless all of you who follow Yeshua/Jesus, our amazing Messiah !

New York City is definitely reaping what they have sown. The DA is very corrupt. They have defunded the police, their last front line defence against evil. They have embraced evil groups like BKM and Antifa. They have effectively tied the hands of the Almighty. What can they reasonable expect Him to do after rewarding all those who commit evil and outlawing all those who would help, folks sent by God? They worship and glorify criminals like George Floyd and Al Sharpton, the thief. May the Lord’s will be done in the wickedest city in the USA!

Thank you, Joyce, for this enlightening article. Many are the problems in New York City, as well as many of our nation’s cities. Letting unvetted, illegal aliens into our cities is a big part of the issue, as well as general lawlessness. The police MUST be given back the authority that they need to do their jobs properly. Lord, this is a mess, a fiasco beyond human aid. Please, by Your great mercy and love, bring about positive changes in this land, especially in our cities. In Jesus’ name.

Praise Lord Jesus Christ. All for the Glory of God.
