I Prayed have prayed
Father God, may we not forget the day, and all who sacrificed. May our nation look to You once again for guidance, protection, and comfort.
Reading Time: 4 minutes

In commemorating this tragic day, we thank you Lord for your continual protection from our enemies, visible and invisible. I ask you to bless our nation, and the souls of those citizens who died on 9/11 and their loved ones who remember.  Please be with our first responders and all those who were part of the rescue and recovery efforts during the 9/11 attacks. Please support our service men and women who have responded to our nation’s call to arms in response to terror all over the world.  We ask you Jesus to their healer and bless their service to our nation. Amen.

Anyone who was old enough to remember the events of 9/11, can most likely tell you where they were at the time, they learned of the planes plunging into the World Trade Center Twin Towers.  I was on my way to teach when on my way past the television, I was stopped by the unthinkable, a monumental tragedy in the history of our nation. The mystery of God in the midst of tragedy causes to reconcile the loss of human life and the countless stories of those who were saved.

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, led to great devastation and death. I immediately called my parent’s home outside Washington, D.C. I learned later that day my father had an appointment at the Pentagon on 9/11. He was on his way out of the Department of Commerce when everyone was told to evacuate.

I believe it was an answer to my prayers and demonstrated to me that God was in control of many people’s lives that day.  We can’t understand why over 3000 souls were lost that day any more than we can completely understand the grace that saved many thousands more that day.

Two months before the event, I was at the White House covering an event in the East Room. As I waited several hours in the Brady Room and in the back of the East Room, I was prompted to pray and pray and pray for hours. I know many thousands were praying in similar ways leading up to 9/11.

Only God knew why He was prompting me to pray in this manner and over this time. But in the days following 9/11, I reflected on my time praying in the White House and how God was prompting me to intercede for His purposes in the White House. It occurred to me with the news reports that followed, that the hijackers had intended to fly one of the planes into the White House and the U.S. Capitol. Each were spared.

In the case of my father’s impending meeting at the Pentagon, he was spared from the impact of the intentions of American Airlines Flight 77 which struck the Pentagon building.

With respect to the World Trade Center, it has been recorded that 22,000 employees worked in each tower but only 10,000 were in towers on 9/11 because people had not arrived to work for any number of reasons. Many were running late or delayed! Also, those who boarded the four planes were far less than capacity.  266 gave their lives on those planes, which was tragic. The number of people who could have been listed among the dead had the planes been full would have been over a thousand.

Another miracle that stood out for me was St. Paul’s Chapel, where George Washington once prayed, and located a only a short distance away from ground zero was spared. The church was used as a place of rest and refuge for the rescue workers.

Another miracle of survival was shared in the Christian Post and worth noting was of Genelle Guzman-MacMillan who was the last survivor pulled from the World Trade Center. She was on the 64th floor of the north tower. She was trapped in the rubble for 27 hours, but her faith gave her strength while waiting to be rescued. She shared, “I prayed, and I prayed and I just begged and begged and asked God for a second chance.”  Ms. Guzman- MacMillan wrote a book based on her story of survival, Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11’s Last Survivor.

During this 20th Anniversary of the tragedy, we thank God and honor the memories of the brave NYC fire fighters, first responders who saved many lives that day while losing many of their fellow heroes that day.

I encourage you to consider a prayerful time of remembrance this weekend. The fact that there is nothing that is planned for those dates… Assist News Service.

I was nowhere near Manhattan on 9/11. But I distinctly remember that day. My husband and I had just moved into a new cottage, a change in position , at a children’s home. The boys (all older teens) were at school and I was cleaning a very nasty oven. My husband called me to the TV. I remember that school let out quickly, all the kids came home and we tried to comfort/support 8 teenage boys. They were sad and angry. (Most of them had parents, but few bothered to call them). I know they needed to do SOMETHING. I got two large white sheets, went and got paint and we made an American Flag. The other one said God Bless America. Since we were out in the country, we put the huge banners on the fence. It was therapeutic for all of us. Later that year 3 of our young men enlisted in the military….
