The written demand for action comes shortly after the FDA pledged a safety review of the drug it approved 25 years ago, bypassing safety concerns. The senators’ letter also follows a lawsuit from Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and a Pelican State woman who survived abortion pill poisoning demanding the FDA end the Biden administration’s mail-order permissions for mifepristone.

As the Republican senators noted in their letter, the Democrat administration’s removals of mifepristone safeguards, such as an in-person visit, “have enabled abortion pills to be obtained by abusers, traffickers, and even minors.” Not only have countless unborn lives been lost, but women have also suffered injuries and even died after taking mifepristone without medical supervision.

The GOPers also noted that the widespread distribution of abortion pills is “systematically undermining states’ rights and violating pro-life state laws.”

The letter, addressed to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration, was signed by 51 conservative senators—every Republican member of the upper chamber except for Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.

The Federalist notes that both HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Administrator Dr. Marty Makary have expressed an interest in reviewing the safety of the abortion pill. However, the senators noted in the letter that the FDA’s recent approval of a second abortion pill “appears inconsistent with the comprehensive safety reassessment [the HHS and FDA] have prioritized.”

The Republican Senators are recommending that the HHS and FDA immediately halt the approval of any new abortion pills until a review of mifepristone is finished. They are also encouraging Secretary Kennedy and Administrator Makary to “reevaluate” the approval of the generic abortion pill, to reverse the Biden administration’s loosening of safeguards, and to label mifepristone as an “imminent hazard” that is prohibited from distribution.

It is encouraging to know that so many senators are speaking out against abortion and up for the unborn. Let’s pray in agreement with these lawmakers for an end to the abortion pill in America!
