Comey Charged a Third Time as the FBI’s Record Faces Reckoning
Federal prosecutors have filed a third case against James Comey, the former FBI director, this time accusing him of transmitting national defense information and conspiring to do so. The charge came Monday, and unlike the earlier matters it has not been presented to a grand jury for indictment.

For conservatives who spent years watching the bureau Comey ran investigate a presidential campaign, then clear a presidential candidate, then obtain surveillance warrants on a staffer using opposition research, the filing is not an abstraction. It is the latest turn in a long argument about whether the FBI polices itself, and whether the Justice Department applies the same standard to officials who hold power as it does to the people they investigate.
According to NBC News, the case has proceeded under seal since October 5. No indictment has been returned on the new counts, and Comey’s defense attorneys moved last week to have the charges dismissed. That procedural posture matters, and it should temper any expectation of a quick resolution.
The earlier cases have not fared well. Comey was charged earlier this year with making a threat against the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce after posting a photograph of seashells arranged to read “86-47.” Prosecutors alleged the image was a threat against the president. In a separate matter last year, he was charged with obstruction of justice and making a false statement to Congress tied to 2020 testimony, and those charges were dismissed.
Comey served as FBI director from 2013 until President Donald Trump dismissed him in May 2017. His tenure included the 2016 investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server, which he publicly closed without recommending charges, and the early phases of the counterintelligence inquiry into Trump campaign associates that later became the subject of a special counsel review. He has since been a consistent public critic of the administration.
The Bible is clear that dishonesty, false testimony, and a lying tongue are evil and destructive. As intercessors, let us pray for wisdom for the Justice Department as they investigate Comey and his charges. Let us pray that any wrongdoing be exposed and that those responsible be held accountable. Ask the Lord to break the culture of impunity inside federal law enforcement, to restore the confidence of the American people in a system that has too often failed them, and to raise up men and women of integrity who will serve the law rather than a political faction.
