I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we pray for protection of American education against foreign influence with nefarious motives. Give wisdom to our investigators as they seek transparency. Give the church courage to teach biblically-based education to our youth. Give our youth discernment as they learn to think for themselves and know what is true. And give our educators the courage to teach the truth and not conform to bribes, threats, or foreign expectations. Amen.

American universities have long served as the nation’s intellectual engine, but a wave of congressional scrutiny and a landmark federal disclosure are raising urgent questions about who is truly shaping what happens on those campuses. The answer, according to new data, increasingly points to Qatar, a Gulf state whose government congressional investigators have linked to the Muslim Brotherhood and whose financial reach inside American higher education now surpasses that of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea combined.

While those four nations carry the formal legal designation “countries of concern,” Qatar holds no such label. It is, in fact, a major non-NATO ally. Yet its billions are flowing freely into some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. For Christians who pray for the next generation and for the integrity of American institutions, the picture emerging from Capitol Hill is worth understanding.

From the Daily Wire:

In contrast to the nearly $1 billion of collective funding by China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, Qatar gives $1 billion to Texas A&M alone, $1.1 billion to Georgetown, $2 billion to Carnegie Mellon, and $3.4 billion to Cornell. Qatar also gives nearly $820 million to Northwestern and nearly $450 million to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Recent Congressional investigations uncovered that the Qatari government had substantial control over these universities. The investigation found that “the Qatar Foundation has sought to influence messaging by U.S. satellite campuses in Doha,” and that the satellite campus programs with their American counterparts influence American schools. One acute example highlighted in the report focuses on Georgetown’s foreign service school in Qatar (GU-Q). The report says “GU-Q advises visitors to ‘speak respectfully about the Emir, the ruling family, and the government system.’ GU-Q also advises visitors that ‘[c]riticizing religions, prophets, or holy books is sensitive’ and urges them to refrain from ‘[p]ublicizing crises happening inside Qatar’ or ‘spreading rumors on social media, even if they’re true.'”

Lawmakers also uncovered private agreements between Northwestern’s Qatar campus and Al-Jazeera, the Qatari state-funded news outlet. In a congressional hearing, the then-president of Northwestern said he had only become aware of the agreement a week prior to the hearing and was “concerned” by the relationship.

The disclosures were set in motion by a July letter from Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, who called the new reporting “long overdue.” Citing Section 117 of the Higher Education Act, Rogers said that across a six-month window, foreign gifts and contracts to the nation’s 187 leading research institutions totaled more than $8.6 billion, with nearly $1 billion coming from formal countries of concern.

The Qatar Foundation, a Qatari state-run nonprofit, provided the bulk of Qatar’s contributions and claimed publicly that the funds support satellite campuses located inside Qatar itself, with no influence over hiring or curriculum at the American partner institutions. Congressional findings told a different story. Among other details, investigators found that the Qatar Foundation required any communications with government entities to pass through it first. Virginia Commonwealth University confirmed to the Daily Wire that the foundation plays a role in approving new degree programs and is consulted on senior leadership appointments, including the dean of its Doha campus.

The exact dollar figures carry some uncertainty. An independent analysis by the Manhattan Institute could not fully corroborate the State Department’s totals, and the department itself acknowledged the numbers may reflect late filings and transactions from earlier periods. Even in the most conservative reading of the available data, however, Qatar emerged as the single largest foreign funder of American universities.

Paul’s warning in Colossians 2:8 reads: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ” (NIV). That warning feels urgent when campuses that once celebrated open inquiry are now quietly bound by foreign funding arrangements that restrict what students, faculty, and visitors may say about a foreign government and its religion. The post-October 7 campus protests, many featuring imagery sympathetic to designated terror organizations, made visible an influence that had been building for years. Intercessors can pray that every hidden financial arrangement shaping American education be brought into full light, that Congress would close the accountability loopholes Qatar currently occupies, and that a generation of students would encounter a wisdom no state-funded foreign curriculum can offer or suppress.

Let’s pray for the students on campuses across this country, that God would protect their minds and draw them toward truth; for the investigators and lawmakers pressing for transparency; for university administrators who may be under quiet pressure to conform to foreign expectations; and for the American church to invest deeply in biblical education so that no generation is left without an anchor.

Lord, please protect our youth from the deception and indoctrination that is being taught in these universities. May Your hand be upon each student to see through the lies. Protect them with Your truth and expose the instructors and all involved in this brainwashing of the innocent. In Jesus name.
