Federal authorities have arrested an 18-year-old Minnesota man accused of plotting a deadly terrorist attack at the Mall of America. Investigators say the suspect was inspired by ISIS and intended to kill dozens of people in an attack motivated partly by antisemitic hatred.

Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, an American citizen of Somali descent, was arrested Tuesday and charged Wednesday after allegedly attempting to acquire a rifle and ammunition for the planned attack.

The suspect, an American citizen of Somali descent, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, was arrested Tuesday and faces charges alleging he sought to acquire an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition with the intent to commit terrorism and provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said at a press briefing Wednesday.

“Today’s charges demonstrate that the threat of terrorism in support of ISIS and other foreign terrorist organizations is active and continuing,” Rosen said, before thanking the Minnesota-based FBI and the city of Bloomington police.

Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office, Christopher Dotson, said that Mohamud had allegedly described himself as “100 percent committed” to what Dotson referred to as his “planned jihad journey.”

According to investigators, Mohamud had pledged allegiance to ISIS more than a year earlier. Unable to travel overseas to join a terrorist organization, he allegedly turned his attention toward carrying out an attack on American soil.

The criminal complaint describes a disturbing combination of jihadist radicalization, antisemitism, and a desire for martyrdom. In messages cited by federal authorities, Mohamud allegedly identified the Mall of America as a target because he believed it was Jewish-owned. He reportedly referenced the antisemitic attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach and expressed a desire to kill Jewish people.

The suspect also allegedly discussed targeting white Americans and deliberately provoking a deadly confrontation with police. Authorities say he hoped to kill between 30 and 60 people before being killed himself.

This is not the first alleged terrorist plot authorities have disrupted in recent weeks. In September, investigators reportedly thwarted an ISIS-inspired mass shooting plot in Pennsylvania. More recently, authorities arrested a suspect accused of planning an attack on the Texas Capitol. IFA also covered the alleged attempted hijacking of Flydubai Flight 1073, in which a potentially catastrophic attack was reportedly prevented.

These incidents raise troubling questions about the spread of violent extremism and radicalization. While it is difficult to determine whether radicalization is increasing nationwide, the frequency of these recent reports is concerning. Individuals inspired by extremist ideologies can pose serious threats even without direct involvement in established terrorist networks.

FBI Director Kash Patel praised the Minnesota investigation, declaring that the bureau is identifying terrorists before they can strike. The latest arrest underscores the importance of proactive counterterrorism investigations and cooperation between federal and local law enforcement.

For intercessors, these incidents should also serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of persistent prayer. In just a matter of weeks, Americans have received reports of multiple potentially deadly attacks being prevented. We should thank God for every life spared while continuing to pray against the hatred, deception, and radicalization that inspire such violence. Let’s ask the Lord to expose hidden plots, give our law enforcement officers supernatural wisdom and discernment, and protect our nation from those who seek to destroy innocent lives.
