The IRGC’s 26-page appeal to American voters ahead of November’s midterm elections is drawing attention after the Iranian military organization urged Americans to remove the nation’s current leaders from power and “take back control.”

“Although American politicians often win your votes through deception and false promises, as Trump did, you can change the makeup of the government if you apply the criteria for good leadership in choosing the people you vote into office,” the IRGC said. “Remove from power the evil, deceitful, and violent politicians who are responsible for America’s current state.”

The IRGC then asked Americans to “take back control.” The letter referred to Trump as a tyrant and said that Islam “requires believers to stand up to tyrants.” The IRGC offered “help” to the American people to “liberate themselves from the tyranny of oppressive powers.” The letter did not specify how the regime would aid the American people in “liberating” themselves.

“The United States of America is a great nation. To allow vulgar and immoral individuals to continue steering your politics and policies will only further humiliate and undermine the U.S. Any politician who thinks they can buy your vote for 5,000 dollars is unworthy to lead you. Take back control.”

The message stopped short of explicitly naming the Democratic Party or telling Americans in those words to “vote Democrat.” But its electoral message was directed against President Donald Trump and the current administration. Independent coverage of the letter similarly reports that the IRGC urged Americans to change their government at the ballot box and turn against the politicians they elected.

The letter also comes amid a Democratic primary season in which several democratic socialist and strongly pro-Palestinian candidates defeated longtime incumbents. In Colorado, democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for the state’s 1st Congressional District. In New York, Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District.

Perhaps most strikingly, the IRGC coupled its political appeal with threats. According to the letter, failure by the United States to change course would eventually cause people around the world to “set fire to all of America’s interests and assets throughout the world,” while producing a “massive economic earthquake” affecting Americans. The organization also attempted to distinguish its longstanding “Death to America” rhetoric from hostility toward individual Americans.

Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terror, and its military is now urging Americans to vote against our Republican leaders. As intercessors, let’s pray for discernment among voters, protection against foreign efforts to manipulate our elections, and wisdom for our leaders as they confront threats from Iran and other adversaries.
