GOP Faces Tough Midterm Map With 33 Days to Go
With just 34 days remaining before the 2026 midterm elections, Republicans are confronting difficult polling in several Senate battlegrounds while trying to protect their narrow congressional majorities.

Democrats currently hold an advantage on the generic ballot, according to The Daily Wire, while several Republican Senate candidates are trailing or locked in close contests. Republicans are hoping their significant financial advantage and an upcoming campaign blitz by President Donald Trump can help change the political environment before Election Day.
From The Daily Wire:
Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the U.S. Senate and are defending vulnerable seats in North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Texas, Iowa, Alaska, and struggling to gain the edge in seats held by Democrats. In Maine, Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who has long defied the odds and the polling, trails Democrat Troy Jackson by less than a point on average, while a New York Times/Siena poll released last week showed Collins up three points.
Down South, the numbers look more ominous for the GOP. Former Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) leads Republican nominee Michael Whatley by 8.4 points to replace the retiring Thom Tillis in the RealClearPolitics polling average. Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chairman, has struggled to gain traction against the well-known former governor. It’s a similar story in Georgia, where incumbent Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff holds an 8-point lead against Trump-endorsed Mike Collins.
“It’s pretty dire circumstances in both those states,” conservative political consultant Ryan Girdusky said in an interview with The Daily Wire, pointing to the Iran conflict and inflation. “And it’s not likely that the Republicans will manage to carry either one of them in November, and that’s bad for the GOP, but that’s just the facts on the ground.”
The challenges extend well beyond North Carolina and Georgia. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico holds an approximately three-point polling advantage over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown leads Republican Sen. Jon Husted by nearly four points, while Republican Ashley Hinson holds only a half-point advantage over Democrat Josh Turek in Iowa. Democratic candidates also lead in the polling cited by The Daily Wire in Michigan and Alaska.
Texas has emerged as an especially noteworthy race. The Daily Wire reports that Talarico has sought to appeal to more moderate voters while undercover footage has raised questions about whether his public positioning reflects his longstanding views. In one video published by the outlet, Talarico said his views on transgender issues “haven’t changed.” Separate undercover footage featured a minister at his longtime church claiming he had received political advice to alter his public positions. Talarico has continued emphasizing his religious beliefs on the campaign trail, recently saying his support for universal health care and opposition to what he calls a “corrupt system” are grounded in the Bible.
President Trump, meanwhile, is preparing to take a much more active role on the campaign trail. The President announced Tuesday that he would embark on what he described as a “32-day tour,” with stops planned across the country. His itinerary includes Republican-leaning states such as Texas, Ohio, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. GOP officials cited in the report say some stops are designed to reach voters beyond their immediate locations through neighboring media markets.
With control of Congress and numerous governorships at stake, the final month of the midterms promises to be consequential. Polls can change, and ultimately voters—not surveys—will determine who governs. For intercessors, these closing weeks provide an important opportunity to pray without placing our confidence in polling numbers or political predictions. Let’s pray for wisdom and discernment among voters, integrity among candidates and campaigns, and for God’s purposes to prevail as Americans prepare to cast their ballots.
