A new poll examining the political attitudes of Democratic voters has produced troubling results, showing that a majority would react positively, or at least without objection, to the prospect of the U.S. military removing a sitting president from power. The findings raise serious questions about how deeply political polarization has eroded basic commitments to constitutional order, even among voters who frequently describe themselves as defenders of democracy.

A new poll shows that 72 percent of Democrats would either support or have no opinion regarding a military coup against President Donald Trump to “safeguard the Constitution,” as a similar number say that he should be criminally prosecuted.

Conducted by the Center for Strategic Politics in collaboration with Liberal Currents, Monday’s poll asked 683 Democratic voters a range of questions regarding their ideal next steps for American politics.

Additionally, 59 percent of Democrats said that they would feel positive about hearing that a group of U.S. military leaders had removed Trump from power before assuming control of the U.S. in order to “safeguard the Constitution.” Another 13 percent said they would have neither a positive nor a negative opinion. Only 28 percent said that they would have a negative reaction to Trump being removed from office by the military.

The poll went further, asking respondents how they would feel upon waking to news of several different scenarios in which Trump left office. The overwhelming majority, 86 percent, said they would feel positive if Trump were impeached, convicted by Congress, and removed from office through the constitutional process. A similarly high number, 84 percent, said they would feel positive if Trump’s own Cabinet invoked the 25th Amendment to declare him unfit for office. Those two findings reflect confidence in existing constitutional mechanisms for removing a president.

The results grew more alarming from there. More than half of respondents, 56 percent, said they would feel positive upon learning that Trump had died overnight in his sleep, and 31 percent said they would feel positive upon hearing that Trump had been assassinated while speaking at a rally. Those figures, alongside the coup finding, suggest a significant share of Democratic voters have grown comfortable contemplating outcomes well outside the bounds of the constitutional process, including political violence against the sitting president.

The survey also explored appetite for criminal prosecution of administration officials. Seventy-seven percent of respondents said members of the Trump administration should face criminal accountability for actions related to immigration and border enforcement, and 73 percent specifically named White House homeland security adviser Stephen Miller as someone who should be prosecuted. Seventy-two percent said the administration should face prosecution over lethal strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats in South America, while 57 percent said officials from both the Trump and Biden administrations should be prosecuted over actions related to the war in Gaza. On the war with Iran, 66 percent supported prosecuting the administration, and 69 percent said Secretary of War Pete Hegseth specifically should face criminal charges over his role in directing military operations.

The poll also gauged Democratic voters’ preferences for alternative leadership. Vice President Kamala Harris and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg were each viewed favorably by 70 percent of respondents, while California Gov. Gavin Newsom was viewed favorably by 66 percent. By contrast, a New York Times tracking poll placed Trump’s overall approval rating at just 37 percent as of Tuesday. A majority of Democratic respondents also expressed support for expanding the Supreme Court, accepting more immigrants, and eliminating the Senate filibuster.

Scripture calls believers to pray for those in authority, including leaders we did not choose and may disagree with, so that the nation might live in peace (1 Timothy 2:1-2). It also warns against the kind of hatred that celebrates harm coming to another person, regardless of political disagreement (1 John 3:15). A poll showing that a majority of one party’s voters would welcome a military coup, and that meaningful numbers would feel positive about a president’s death or assassination, reflects a dangerous erosion of the shared commitment to peaceful, lawful transitions of power that has sustained the American republic for nearly 250 years. This is not a matter of policy disagreement but of whether citizens still believe in resolving disputes through elections, courts, and Congress rather than violence or military intervention. Let us pray fervently for the protection of the president and all elected officials, for a spirit of civility to be restored across the political spectrum, and for hearts hardened by tribalism to be softened by truth and grace.
