The Justice Department has announced a new round of election-related prosecutions, charging 16 people across seven states with crimes involving alleged illegal voting, false citizenship claims, and related fraud. The announcement comes as federal officials say investigations into suspected noncitizen voting are continuing across the country.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday it had charged 16 people in seven states with illegally voting, registering to vote through false citizenship claims, and related fraud, according to a press release from the department’s Office of Public Affairs. Many of the accused are noncitizens alleged to have voted in federal contests.

The department paired the filings with a blunt message on social media. “Let this be a warning to ANYONE trying to cheat and undermine our elections,” the DOJ wrote. “Spread the word!”

Prosecutors brought cases in Texas, Idaho, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Michigan, the DOJ said. Investigators working the files also turned up alleged wire fraud, passport and identification fraud, and unlawful firearm purchases.

Among the cases highlighted in the source is that of Analiea Milliscent Eccles, a 44-year-old Venezuelan national and DACA recipient in Georgia. According to the DOJ, Eccles voted nine times between 2008 and 2024 and has been charged with voting as a noncitizen and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship. In Idaho, Mexican national Avila Gomez allegedly voted in 2022 and 2024 and faces several additional charges, including wire fraud, passport fraud, and firearm offenses.

The cases extend to several other states. New Jersey resident Santana Coulibaly, a lawful permanent resident, allegedly registered to vote in 2016, voted in federal elections in 2018 and 2020, and submitted a provisional ballot in 2024. Eight of the 16 defendants reside in Texas. The DOJ emphasized that the charges are accusations and that every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The prosecutions are also part of a broader federal enforcement effort. Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald said the administration has now charged 50 noncitizens with illegal voting, declaring, “America’s elections are for Americans.” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said investigators have more than 1,620 open cases, have made 151 arrests, and are reviewing more than 300,000 suspected cases. Those figures describe cases under review and investigations, not proven instances of illegal voting.

Election integrity depends on lawful votes being protected and election laws being enforced fairly and consistently. These prosecutions involve allegations that will have to be tested in court, but they also highlight the importance of ensuring that voter-registration systems accurately distinguish eligible citizens from those who are not legally permitted to vote. Let’s pray that election officials, investigators, and courts would pursue truth and justice, that wrongdoing would be uncovered where it occurs, and that Americans would be able to place confidence in elections governed by the rule of law.
