What Will Future Generations Remember?

When most people hear the word legacy, they think of financial assets – homes, investments, heirlooms, or family inheritances.

Get involved in state-level prayer with IFA.

But Scripture paints a much larger picture.

As believers, our greatest legacy is not found in what we leave behind financially. It is found in the faith we pass on, the prayers we pray, and the example we leave for those who follow us.

At Intercessors for America, we often reflect on the prayers of faithful believers who came before us. Their willingness to stand watch, seek God’s face, and contend for His purposes helped shape the spiritual landscape we inhabit today. Many of us are walking in the fruit of prayers we never heard and sacrifices we never saw.

What legacy are we leaving for those who come after us?

“One generation shall commend Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts.”
— Psalm 145:4

Passing Down More Than Possessions

In Proverbs 13:22, Scripture tells us:

“A good person leaves an inheritance to their children’s children.”

While that certainly includes material provision, a Biblical inheritance is far more than money.

Consider the things that have shaped your own walk with the Lord:

  • A parent’s prayers
  • A grandparent’s example of faithfulness
  • A mentor’s wisdom
  • A testimony of God’s provision
  • A commitment to Scripture and prayer

These are treasures that cannot be measured in dollars, yet they often have the greatest impact.

Long after possessions have been distributed, the influence of a faithful life continues.

“The righteous who walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him.”
— Proverbs 20:7

A Legacy of Prayer

Prayer is one of the most significant gifts we can pass on to future generations.

Every prayer offered for our families, churches, communities, and nation leaves a spiritual imprint that extends beyond our lifetime.

At IFA, we believe prayer is an investment in the future.

When we intercede for America, we are not only praying for today’s headlines. We are praying for tomorrow’s leaders, tomorrow’s families, and future generations who will inherit the nation we leave behind.

What a remarkable privilege God has given us, to participate in His work through prayer and to leave a legacy of faith that continues long after we are gone.

“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night.”
— Isaiah 62:6

Stewarding What God Has Entrusted to Us

Faithful stewardship includes both our spiritual and material resources.

As we prayerfully consider the future, many believers find peace in creating a plan that reflects their values and priorities. Thoughtful planning can help care for loved ones, communicate important wishes, and support the ministries and Kingdom work that have shaped our lives.

For some members of the IFA family, that includes making provisions that ensure prayer for America continues for generations to come.

These decisions are deeply personal and should always be approached prayerfully and without pressure. The goal is not simply to distribute assets, it’s to leave a testimony of faithful stewardship.

“Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”
— 1 Corinthians 4:2

Questions for Prayerful Reflection

As you consider the legacy God is calling you to leave, take a moment to reflect:

  • What values do I hope future generations remember?
  • How have the prayers of previous generations impacted my life?
  • What stories of God’s faithfulness do I want to pass on?
  • How can I steward my resources in a way that honors God?
  • What Kingdom impact do I hope continues beyond my lifetime?

A Final Encouragement

The most enduring legacies are not built in a day. They are formed through years of faithful obedience.

Every prayer offered.

Every act of generosity.

Every step of faith.

Every opportunity to point others toward Christ.

These are the building blocks of a God-honoring legacy.

Whether through your example, your prayers, your encouragement, or your stewardship, God can use your life to influence generations you may never meet this side of heaven.

May we be found faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, leaving behind not only resources, but a testimony that encourages future generations to seek Him wholeheartedly.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16

Prayer Points

As you consider the legacy you are building, take a moment to pray:

Pray for Future Generations

“One generation shall commend Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.” — Psalm 145:4

Ask the Lord to draw your children, grandchildren, and future generations into a deeper relationship with Him and to establish them firmly in the truth of His Word.

Pray for Faithful Stewardship

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your produce.” — Proverbs 3:9

Pray for wisdom to faithfully steward the time, talents, influence, and resources God has entrusted to you.

Pray for a Legacy of Prayer

“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Ask God to create a lasting culture of prayer in your family and among those you influence.

Pray for Lasting Kingdom Impact

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10

Pray that your life and legacy would advance God’s purposes and continue bearing fruit long after you are gone.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for every blessing You have entrusted to us. Help us to live with eternity in view and to steward our lives in ways that honor You. May our prayers, our faith, our generosity, and our example point future generations toward Christ. Give us wisdom to make decisions that reflect Your heart and advance Your Kingdom.

May our legacy be one that glorifies You and bears fruit for generations to come.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
