Now, President Donald Trump is going directly to the American people, asking them to pressure Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to act on the SAVE America Act.

The push comes as a software error in New Jersey’s motor vehicle system accidentally registered thousands of non-citizens to vote, giving supporters of the bill a real-world example of why they say the law is needed.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday ramped up his pressure campaign against Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), urging supporters to flood his office with calls demanding action on the SAVE America Act.

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill revealed Tuesday that the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) mistakenly registered roughly 6,600 non-citizens despite their indicating they were not U.S. citizens while applying for IDs and driver’s licenses between June 2023 and June 2024, The Daily Wire reported.

“These individuals answered ‘no’ when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers’ licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” Sherrill wrote in an X post.

The SAVE America Act is a bill designed to strengthen election security. The House passed it for the third time this week by pairing it with the Stop Insider Trading Act, which would ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks. The combined bill passed 232 to 198, with 13 Democrats voting yes. It marked the first time a congressional stock trading ban has ever received a full House floor vote.

House Republicans are growing openly frustrated with the Senate’s repeated inaction. Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) said Thune should step down as Majority Leader if he will not bring the bill to a vote. Meanwhile, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill confirmed that roughly 6,600 non-citizens were mistakenly added to the state’s voter rolls after a system error registered them despite their indicating they were not U.S. citizens. Trump administration officials have said those who illegally voted could face prosecution and deportation.

Democrats opposed the combined bill, saying the stock trading provisions did not go far enough and objecting to the election integrity language attached to it. The bill now moves to the Senate, where its path forward remains unclear.
