Missile threats against the United States continue to grow as countries like China, Russia, and North Korea develop faster and more advanced weapons. In response, the Trump administration is investing billions of dollars in a new defense system designed to detect and stop those threats before they can reach the U.S.

This week, the U.S. Space Development Agency recently awarded approximately $1.75 billion in contracts to two defense companies to build 36 new missile-tracking satellites for President Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense program. Florida-based L3Harris Technologies received about $955 million to produce 18 Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) satellites, while Colorado-based Sierra Space was awarded roughly $798 million to build another 18 missile warning and tracking satellites.

L3Harris Vice President Ed Zoiss said in an interview on The Washington Times’ Threat Status Influencers program in 2025 that the HBTSS system tracks missiles using infrared technology, which can be tricky with futuristic hypersonic glide missiles, whose speeds change in more complex ways than conventional intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“The goal of this satellite is to find [the] dim heat signature for that hypersonic weapon and then to track it,” he said, adding that L3Harris had successfully demonstrated that “it can be done from space.”

Other industry insiders say space-based interceptors and tracking systems will be used to close a gap in defenses when combined with current ground- and sea-based missile defense systems to protect against a new generation of threats to the U.S. homeland.

The Golden Dome initiative has become one of President Trump’s signature national security projects. According to Gen. Michael Guetlein, who oversees the program, the goal is to have the system protecting the entire United States by the middle of 2028. Congress has already approved tens of billions of dollars for the project, though estimates for its total cost vary dramatically.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the system could eventually cost more than $1.2 trillion over two decades, while Pentagon estimates are far lower. Some lawmakers have  questioned whether a large-scale missile attack could overwhelm the system despite its sophisticated technology. Meanwhile, many of the technical details remain classified, limiting public understanding of how the completed defense network will operate.

As missile technology continues to advance around the world, decisions about America’s defense capabilities carry significant implications for national security, government spending, and international stability. As intercessors, let us pray for wisdom for leaders as they seek to balance security, stewardship of taxpayer resources, and the pursuit of peace. Pray for President Trump, military leaders, and members of Congress as they make decisions about America’s defense. Pray for wisdom, accountability, and protection for our nation. Pray that God will guide and lead President Trump and his staff as they decide on the next steps forward with the Golden Dome project.
