As AI continues to develop, many are finding entertainment in talking with lifelike chatbots and pushing the technology to its limits. But, for children, these conversations with realistic robots can often cause more harm than good.

Chatbots are digital characters that can text and talk with users of any age. Unfortunately, experts have found this latest advance can also respond with disturbing suggestions, including violence, sexually explicit conversations, and ideas about self-harm.

According to the National Association of Attorneys General, a recent lawsuit against Google alleges a highly sexualized chatbot steered a teenager toward suicide. Another suit alleges a Character.AI chatbot intimated that a teenager should kill his parents.

And in another case, the family of 16-year-old Adam Raine recently sued OpenAI for wrongful death, claiming that ChatGPT lured their son to rely on its product for companionship and eventually led him to take his own life.

According to Common Sense Media, 72 percent of American teenagers are talking with chatbots for companionship, and nearly one in eight have reportedly sough emotional or mental health support from them. In light of this shocking statistic, 44 state attorneys general are pushing Big Tech for stronger guardrails on AI.

There has been some progress. Following Raine’s death, OpenAI announced changes designed to protect the young and vulnerable. These changes include expanding interventions, making it easier to receive help from emergency services, and strengthening protections for youth.

As artificial intelligence becomes more and more lifelike, it is becoming more and more dangerous, just like shady strangers on the internet. Only AI may be worse than strangers. As Dr. Anna Ord, Dean of Regent University’s School of Psychology, pointed out, AI, unlike humans, has no moral compass. Chatbots see no issue with presenting graphic and disturbing content to children.

With all of this taken into account, it’s clear that our kids are in danger. Let’s ask God to protect our children online and to guide lawmakers as they craft guardrails for AI.
