I Prayed have prayed
Father, we pray for the protection of all nations in NATO, and for the wise spending of our government's money.

At this week’s NATO summit in The Hague, member countries made a historic decision: they agreed to raise defense spending from the current 2% to 5% of GDP by 2035.

This increase is split into 3.5% for traditional military needs—troops, equipment—and 1.5% for infrastructure, cyber defense, and logistical support.

Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the agreement as a ā€œquantum leap,ā€ underscoring strong commitment to Article 5—the principle that an attack on one NATO ally is an attack on all of them.

The resolution was largely driven by pressure from President Donald Trump, who emphasized fair burden-sharing, though Spain and a few other countries voiced concerns about meeting such a steep rise. A review will take place in 2029 to monitor progress.

This move comes amid rising threats—particularly from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and increased cyber and drone warfare. NATO allies like Poland, the Baltic states, and Canada are already increasing their defense contributions, with Poland spending nearly 4.7% of its GDP.

For Christians yearning for peace, this agreement presents complex tension: the hope is that increased defense could deter aggression and preserve stability, but there is also a risk of escalating militarization, along with the decision paradoxically coming in the wake of government budget cuts via DOGE. While many believe stronger defense may prevent conflict, others worry heavy defense budgets may divert resources from humanitarian and peace-building efforts.

It seems that those of us who value a strong defense are more and more accused of being “warmongers” – whereas I would say that a strong defense is a deterrent to war. Bullies are not given to backing off through negotiations, or appeasement – only through a show of force. That has been proven throughout history, and in current conflicts. NBC is not a source that I trust, especially when it comes to commentary. But I can’t imagine that the last paragraph is from that source, because they would not be commenting on Christian beliefs. Anyone in their right mind yearns for peace, but I’m beginning to think that there is such a thing as “peacemongers”! Peace at any cost is not peace at all. And sticking our head in the sand and ignoring very real enemies doesn’t allow for accurate vision or preparedness.
Yeshua, You told us to pray for peace, but You also told us that there would be wars and rumors of wars. And You told us that You didn’t come to bring peace, but a sword. In ancient times, You told Your people, in Jeremiah 8:11Ā  “For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” The Christian life is a life of spiritual warfare. Please align us with the whole counsel of Your Word, that we might be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

This is a very necessary development. NATO needs to show strength and unity to be effective in its ability to show strength to our enemies., who need to stay their own size. Unfortunately, that is the way things are in today’s world. If we are going to remain free nations, we need to have the military strength and unity to stand up to the bullies out there.
