What’s going on in Washington?

The SALT Cap Increase

As debate continues among republicans, the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap has taken center stage. The Daily Wire has the story:

In the 389-page tax package released on Monday, there was a provision to increase the SALT deduction cap to $30,000 for individuals earning $400,000 or less, up from the current $10,000 limit from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that is set to expire at the end of this year.

The House Ways and Means Committee advanced the tax measure in a 26-19 vote along party lines on Wednesday morning, but Republicans from high-tax blue states such as New York, New Jersey, and California are fighting for a higher ceiling.

With high-profile Republicans like Rep. Elise Stefanik calling for a higher SALT deduction cap, it’s hard to tell what exactly the party will decide on. With Democrats in a frenzy over Medicaid cuts, it is unlikely the “big, beautiful bill” will receive any support from across the aisle.

The Medicaid Cuts

The Energy and Commerce Committee talked through the night in a lengthy meeting frequently interrupted by protestors and Democrat lawmakers upset about cuts to Medicaid. Fox News has the story:

Sparks flew early at the Energy & Commerce Committee meeting with protesters both inside and outside the room repeatedly attempting to disrupt proceedings – with 26 people arrested by Capitol Police.

Inside the budget markup, Democrats and Republicans sparred along party lines over Medicaid cuts. Democrats repeatedly claimed the Republican budget proposal will cut vital Medicaid services.

Republicans have contended that their bill only seeks to cut waste, fraud, and abuse of the Medicaid system, leaving more of its resources for vulnerable populations that truly need it.

For months now, the talking point that “Republicans want to cut Medicaid” has been a constant drumbeat in the legacy media. With the committee being tasked with finding $880 billion in spending cuts, some cuts to Medicaid seem inevitable, despite the panic and outcry.

Defunding Planned Parenthood

Amid the chaos, we have good news to share: Planned Parenthood is on the spending cut chopping block. From The Daily Signal:

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has announced its portion of the reconciliation bill would slash Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding. Now, a conservative think tank is urging Republicans in Congress to act to defund the abortion giant.

The reconciliation bill contains language removing funding for organizations that participate in transgender medical interventions for minors.

If this makes it into the final version of the reconciliation bill, it would be a huge answer to our prayers!

How Should We Pray?

Chaos in Washington is nothing new, but it feels especially dangerous this time. President Trump has proven to be even more of a maverick in his second term, bringing massive changes and answers to decades-old prayers. Let’s pray that Republicans are unified so that they can back him up and codify change and reform that our nation desperately needs.

According the The Daily Wire, Speaker Johnson hopes to having the spending bill finished up by Memorial Day. Make it happen, Lord!
