I Prayed have prayed
Lord, we pray for educational reform in America. We ask You to fix our schools and to ensure that our children are educated well.

Trump wants to dismantle the DOE, and that’s a good idea. But it has to be followed with more reform at the state and local levels to actually make a difference.

From The Federalist. Last week, Donald Trump nominated Linda McMahon, co-founder of the World Wrestling Entertainment company, the head of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, and two-time nominee for the U.S. Senate, as his secretary of education. …

As Trump has said on numerous occasions, the ultimate hope is that McMahon will be the last secretary of education and work to eliminate the Department of Education altogether. He and many others believe this will help end the leftist indoctrination happening in schools, restore parental rights, weaken teachers unions, and save the federal government a few hundred billion dollars each year.

While all this sounds very nice, speaking as a high school English teacher who has worked in this system for nearly two decades, this rationale fundamentally misunderstands what the DOE does and doesn’t do.

First and foremost, the DOE mainly cuts checks for schools that serve poorer students, certain special education programs, and bogus education studies that no one reads. …

That said, the DOE has overstepped its authority in the past decade by using federal funds to force states to use Common Core curriculum. At the same time, Barack Obama used the department to send out “guidelines” for school discipline that let countless delinquents off the hook in the name of equity. …

… Indeed, reversing these ridiculous policies that have dumbed down most classrooms and made them unsafe and chaotic would be the best thing someone like McMahon could do.

Outside of this, however, the influence of the DOE’s absence would be limited. Public education is mostly controlled by state and local governments along with district school boards and administrators. Even if these officials could finally raise academic and behavioral standards without fear of losing funding or being sued, most of them, even in conservative areas, have an interest in maintaining the status quo. After all, what are unhappy parents going to do? Leave? …

More importantly, all these decisions are made by those who either have no experience in the classroom or have been out of the classroom for many years. They are the ones who think it would be a good idea to put gay pornography in school librariesfacilitate transgender transitions for depressed adolescents, and shut down “gifted and talented” programs to close racial achievement gaps. …

All of which is to say that getting rid of the DOE or at least diminishing its role would only be the first step. The next, much harder step would be voting for politicians and policies that would implement school vouchers for students, merit pay for teachers, expanded school accreditation, and much more standardized testing to hold educational institutions accountable. …

Yes, yes, yes! Let’s use logical thinking with regard to education. Put back in place tried and true “phonics” reading, “cursive” writing, etc. Not all this demonic nonsense that the left wanted to ram down our throats. The US government does not need to replace parents in schools. Put education where it belongs at the local state level.
Thank you again God for hearing our prayers and answering our prayers. Amen. Also, prayers and the pledge of allegiance and teach the “Constitution.”

This is a very important move, in a series of important moves. The federal government has absolutely NO business controlling the curriculum or policy of our public schools. Lord Jesus, I pray that You give wisdom, guidance, and direction to the people serving in the schools, and to the members of the school boards. Thank you Jesus.

I have been both a public school teacher and homeschool parent. I finished my career in education as director of special education of a very small rural district serving Native American children on one of the reservations of South Dakota. I am now retired,
I had a front row seat to the decline of high expectations of all students and instruction in all academic areas as teachers and administrators became more and more focused on student scores on the all important state test. The test of how students perform on standards for reading and math. The test that determines if your school will be labeled chronically low performing or in need of improvement. The test that compares students living in the poorest counties in the country with those living in the richest…

The problem with public funded education in this country starts in the universities where teachers are indoctrinated in Marxist philosophy and sent to spread that to the next generation.

South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds has introduced legislation dismantling the Dept. of Education. It seems to me to be well planned and keeps the elements needed by moving them to other departments.

Lord,
I pray for Godly men and women to see public schools as a mission field. I pray for teachers and school staff who are shining the light of Jesus in our schools. I pray for those who are struggling to be the light in those schools where there is a strong anti-Christ spirit.
I pray that the Bible will be reintroduced in more and more schools as a resource for literature and history classes.
Lord show parents the vital role they have in determining the curriculum used, the books in school libraries and what teachers are saying, teaching the students.
Help us to take back the mountain of education at all levels.
Amen

While I substantially agree with the premise and suggestions of this author, as a homeschooler, I disagree with some foundational points. I personally believe that the root of public education in our nation is rotten so the tree will always produce bad fruit. During the days of one room school houses, research has shown that we had the highest literacy rate in US history. There are many reasons for this but fundamentally parents had full authority over who was teaching their children, children were taught in an environment that was much like their home in that many ages learn together, and the Bible was taught in school as a means of learning to read and is a foundation for many other parts of the curriculum. If what we teach in schools does not have scripture and God’s word and his truth as its foundation it will not produce good fruit. I would love parents to have voucher systems for schools, and I would love teachers to be compensated on merit, but we need nothing short of revival in our nation to reform education.

Father, we pray for our schools and the leadership that they would serve our students well and those students would learn. Give guidance to President Trump and his cabinet pick for the department of education in how they eliminate the department of education. Bless the states, that they may do good in running the schools.

“Standardized” texting is an open opportunity to again control educational content and orientation from the top. Personally, I would never encourage turning over this kind of power to ANY government power – and it would almost certainly be a bureaucracy that would be developing and managing any such project.
Let private foundations produce their own competing versions, and let the parents decide which one had values and knowledge aligning the most closely with what they want their children to learn and absorb.
There is at least one available now – The Classical Learning Test. Have a look at it.
