President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in SingaporeĀ in June for a historic summit and signed an agreement committing to the ābuilding of a lasting and robust peace regimeā on the Korean peninsula.
āWeāre prepared to start a new history, and weāre ready to start a new chapter between our nations,āĀ Trump saidĀ at a news conference.
āPeace is always worth the effort,ā he said. āAnyone can make war, but only the most courageous can make peace.ā

Denuclearization
Trump and KimĀ signed a documentĀ promising to work for ācomplete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.ā
Trump laterĀ told Fox NewsĀ he thought Kim would begin to dismantle his nuclear program āvirtually immediately.ā
āI just think that we are now going to start the process of denuclearization of North Korea, and I believe that heās going back and will start it virtually immediately,ā Trump said. āAnd heās already indicated that and you look at what heās done.ā

āHis country has to be de-nuked, and he understood that he fully understood that, he didnāt fight it,ā Trump said.
At a news conference, the president said he understood it would take āa long time to pull off complete denuclearization,ā but he promised to push North Korea to remove its weapons quickly as it āmechanically and physicallyā can be done.
Trump also said Kim will be destroying a āmajorā missile testing site āvery soon,ā an agreement they came to after signing the document.
Human rights violations
The summit came nearly a year afterĀ Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old college student, died after being brought back to the U.S. The University of Virginia student had been arrested in January 2016 for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster and sentenced to 15 months in prison. While incarcerated, he fell into a coma.
āOtto did not die in vain,ā Trump said in Singapore.
Trump told reporters after the meeting that he did discuss human rights with Kim, albeit briefly. Prior to the summit,Ā it was reportedĀ that the U.S. delegation, including the president, would steer clear of the Hermit KingdomāsĀ lengthy listĀ of human rights violations.
Prior to the summit, Vice President Mike Pence said he hadĀ spoken to Warmbierās father and promised him his son āwill not have died in vain.ā
Recovering American soldiers

Trump said the remains of U.S. soldiers who died in the Korean War will be brought home. Nearly 7,800 U.S. soldiers were listed missing or unaccounted for from the Korean War. Around 5,300 of those people were lost in North Korea.
Both Kim and TrumpĀ signed an agreementĀ for the recovery of the remains of American soldiers as well as the immediate repatriation of those who have already been identified.
