I Prayed have prayed
Father in heaven, help us be ready for the unexpected answers You are preparing when You hear our prayers.
Reading Time: 6 minutes

A common mistake we make when we pray for ourselves or others is to limit God through our expectations or the assumptions born of past experiences. While the phrase “God never works the same way twice” is not entirely accurate, He does often work in ways we don’t expect. We’re often caught looking for answers in all the wrong places.

Have you taken your place on the wall?

Perhaps you’ve heard the famous story of a man trapped on the roof of his house during a major flood. As the flood waters rise and he begins to face death by drowning, he pleads with God to rescue him. After a few minutes, a good Samaritan appears with a lifesaver. The man, however, waves him off. After all, God is going to rescue him. A short time later, an emergency crew in a rowboat appears to get him to safety. Again, the man waves him off. After some time, with the floodwaters still rising, a helicopter approaches with a hoist, but the man waves it off, too. Then, the waters engulf the roof of his house, and he drowns. After he enters heaven, he asks God why He didn’t rescue him. The Lord replies: “I tried to. I sent a man with a lifesaver, a crew with a rowboat, and even a helicopter, but you refused them all.”

The moral of that story: Let’s not demand that God answer in some way that seems logical to us or that necessarily aligns with what we want. Our tendency to limit God comes from our sinful nature that wants to control the outcome of what seems uncertain to us.

God knows what is in our hearts, and often He throws us a curveball.

The curveball is one of the most dreaded pitches in baseball. Pitchers who throw good ones can make the ball travel at the batter and fool him into thinking it’ll come straight at him, only to suddenly change direction and throw him off guard. The idea is, of course, to make the batter anticipate a certain ball trajectory and then miss by reacting too late to the change in direction. Experienced batters know what an opposing pitcher is capable of, and they adjust their stance to anticipate a curveball. The key is to keep your eye on the ball and be ready for anything.

That’s why the curveball has become a metaphor for life’s unexpected twists and turns. And often, the unexpected ways God answers our prayers feel like curveballs. His purpose, of course, is different from that of any baseball pitcher. He doesn’t want us to miss; He wants us to grow in faith and in the knowledge of Himself.

The Bible is full of curveball examples.

Take Moses, for instance. He did what was logical in his eyes when he saw an Egyptian mistreat one of his kinsmen. The result was disastrous – he committed murder and went from prince to refugee. The curveball was forty years of sheepherding in the desert until he lost all confidence in his ability to save his people. And that is when God deemed him ready for the task He had intended for him.

Christmas celebrates another curveball. The Jews expected a Messiah who was a powerful and militant political figure who would come in glory and rescue them from the yoke of Roman occupation. Instead, God sent a little baby, born to an unassuming couple from a town of ill repute in a filthy stable. Apart from a few selected people to whom His arrival was revealed, no one knew the baby would grow up to preach, heal, calm storms, walk on water, and go to the cross to bear the sins of mankind and defeat Satan and his forces and rise again from the dead to reign in glory.

The Bible is full of implications that we should expect the unexpected when we seek God and entreat Him about our cares and the burdens of the world – including troubling news headlines. Here is a sample of texts that lift the veil on God’s curveballs:

“Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it?”
Isaiah 43:19

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8,9

“Look among the nations and watch— Be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days which you would not believe, though it were told you.”
Habakkuk 1:5

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”
1 John 5:14-15

When we surrender our will to God’s in our prayers, we move from trying to instruct God on how we think He should answer to voicing our expectation of the unexpected. That is how we grow, and growth is what God has in mind when He throws us curveballs. He accomplishes four things in us when He answers in ways we do not expect.

  1. We learn to surrender to His will, which is perfect and good, while ours is not. Surrendering to God’s will, which we only know and understand in part, implies that things may turn out differently than what we ask for. For instance, our sense of logic would have us pray for a sick person to get well or a crisis to be lifted. But God’s will may be that the sickness leads to greater dependence on Him and experience of His comfort, and He may want to accomplish things through a crisis that we cannot see or understand.
  2. He tests and strengthens our faith. If we limit God to our understanding, we also limit our view of His greatness and power. By expecting that He may answer in ways outside or above our expectations, we push ourselves to see Him as a God Who has no limits and Who acts in wisdom and power far superior to our understanding. The bigger God is in our eyes, the greater our faith in Him becomes.
  3. He keeps us focused on Him.  A batter cannot take his eyes off the pitcher and the ball. Continuous communion with Him keeps us focused on God while expecting the unexpected, which is an incentive not to get distracted. That is why Paul warns us to set our minds on the things that are above, not on earthly things (see Colossians 3:2). Keeping our focus on Him not only fuels our faith but keeps us in a state of readiness to receive from Him in whatever way He chooses to give in answer to our prayers.
  4. He keeps us on our toes so we stay alert and do not retreat into our comfort zones. That seems cruel, but God does not want us to get comfortable. There is always more of Him to learn and discover, and our spiritual lives must constantly grow. Comfort zones lead to stagnation of faith, which then causes us to slip into unbelief. Sometimes, when we tell people about our mission trips to Africa, which depend on God’s provision and protection, when we go to places very few white people visit, we get the reaction, “I could never do that.” That is barricading yourself in a comfort zone out of fear. God’s curveballs destroy comfort zones so we may learn to depend on His strength in our weakness.

Friends, get ready for a curveball or two in the coming year. God would not be a loving Father if He did not test you, stretch you, grow you in your faith and understanding of Him, or wouldn’t want to make you stronger. See curveballs as a blessing and an opportunity to get to know your heavenly Father better.

As you pray for the nation from week to week, be vigilant against your carnal tendencies to box Him in with expectations of how He will work, instructions on how you want Him to work, or the repetitiveness of past experiences. Joyfully anticipate Him to do new things in His way, and gladly acknowledge that His thoughts and ways are higher than ours.

Our Father God is amazingly imaginative and creative in His answers and His leadings. It’s good to be open so that God can work in any way He wants to and in the way He knows is best. When the answer comes, it’s surprisingly and delightfully perfect. The answer gives us great joy, insight, and motivation to never give up praying till the answer comes. The answer also motivates us to action, doing what God shows us to do. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!!May we always wait as long as necessary ( PUSH: pray until something happens) in prayer and then act on what God says. What a blessing to belong to the true and living God !!

Yes Lord God 🙏, you are always in control. We come to you through humble prayers. As believers, we may not hear what we want, but you always have the best outcome. Let us rest on that because you never let us down!!

Thank you for your encouraging Word. We had a great day yesterday with t h issues being resolved favorably. One was two years in the outcome. The Lord told me of another that would be confined because of weather. It was resolved by doing remote over the next season
Lol at myself and concern over the how..
The LORD says now being established in your comfort zone doesn’t accomplish the need today. Warriors with armor on seeking direction need to arise. The enemy is at the gate. The weather will advance or detain. Beware….’BE AWARE

The main thing here is that the Lord’s people would SEE the Lord’s curveballs and thank Him and move in obedience to their callings. There should be more of “look what the Lord has done!!”

Elizabeth, I went through a divorce in 1996 and at the time it was the most painful thing that had ever happened to me. I couldn’t get through the day without stopping to read my Bible. During that time I was raising three teenagers, working full-time, and working on my Bachelors in nursing. As I look back on that time, the pain has faded, but it was also the best time in my life with God!!! He showed himself to me in such mighty ways. And the experience that was not of my own choosing, became the turning point that led me back to my God and to my Savior Jesus. It also helped me to come along side others going through the same thing…and still does even today. Stay close to your true Husband, Father, Provider, and Protector and He will get you through.

Lord, we praise You for Your knowledge, divine wisdom, and incomprehensible love. You know us better than we know ourselves, and yet, as with scales, You weigh out perfectly our lives, the provisions in our lives, and our free will. You could put us in a box, but You don’t; while we tend to put You in a box. Forgive us and be patient with us. Help us to draw close to You, so that when Your answers come to us in unexpected ways, we can better adjust to them and draw more dependent upon You as well. We lean on Your wisdom and try to bring our personal will into harmony with Yours. We confess that while we have preconceived ideas what works personally for us, You know better. Teach us Your ways, purge our sins and give us Your grace. Work through us, in spite of ourselves, that Your kingdom may be advanced. As we grow closer to You, help us to value what is most important to You and embrace it for ourselves as well. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I am going through a divorce that I did not choose but also freed from emotional abuse. I am way out of my comfort zones in all areas- we started attending a new church two years ago so I do not have close ties.
My family of origin is broken and my nuclear family is broken. I am starting a master’s in counseling in March while working part time and hoping for spousal maintenance to see me through (no alimony in TX). I wonder how I will connect with my teens and keep relationships with them as he has money to take them all over and share experiences but I do not. Uncertain about how to move forward in settling assets. My narcissistic mother sided with my husband and gives me no emotional support. There is no Divorce Care in my community. I am sad and lonely. I need protection against fear and depression. My life has been full of curveballs which have been traumatic. I depend on Him. I am week. Plans to go abroad for evangelism over Spring Break. Depending on financial support. Depending on Him to heal all of this pain, rejection and abandonment.
I will need to reread the article to remember.

Elizabeth, I went down a similar road in 1994. It took me a year of just leaning on the Lord Jesus completely while I was so very, very sad about the divorce. It was not my idea! I went to Al-anon meetings which helped me so much. I could cry there! Al-anons are good listeners. They tell U to keep coming back! My former husband had developed some addiction issues. Al-anon is for families of people who have addiction issues. I still go to Al-anon these many years later. I learned to stand on my own two feet. I went back to school, got an undergraduate & masters degree & taught school for 19 years. I can live on a teacher’s pension & social security! I have more than enough! I took Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University class. I live by those principles. I live simply, but I have such a good life! I have a small group of women at church as well. We stick together. We study the Word & pray for each other. I dance, go to the gym & hike. Getting the endorphins moving in my brain helps me. Elizabeth, I know U are going to get thru this & U are going to come out stronger on the other end of it! I am praying for U.

    Hugs to you Elizabeth.
Thank you for being so honest, transparent, trusting us, your spiritual family with the deep pain you are walking through, actually, I see our Shepard/Love carrying you on His shoulders….
Let me share a couple stories to encourage you.
I have a friend who went through a nasty divorce, her two kids were elementary age, her husband had them as he was financially stable, she was new to US, barely spoke English though she was well educated in her country of origin, so she didn’t get to see them much either. But she trusted the Lord, listened to him, got her counseling degree as she became very proficient in English, got a job, even got to know her kids with letters, videos shared when the could not be face to face, eventually got remarried to a godly man and even had her daughter come live with them a couple years while she went to college near them!
And a person close to me, who had a terrible relationship with both parents, kinda crippled the person emotionally, has forgiven the mom for her abuses, emotional and physical, coming to see she was broken herself by abuse and exposure to alcoholic tirades of terror in her childhood and forgiven the dad’s well meaning but poorly given discipline, especially in teen years…even learned to be different toward our children, so much different that the kids comment on the difference! They see the healing too!
    Trust G-D’s goodness…
Glad you want to go back and read this devotion. The verses shared are treasures. Isaiah 55:8-9, Hab 1:5 and Isaiah 43:19 have not ‘just’ been a treasured 🗡️ from Poppa G-D, these have become battleaxes❤️‍🔥
Last thought, thank you so much Remco! For taking time to write this down and share it! So timely, with so much darkness in the world, but we can not give in to confusion or dissappointment that tempts and taunts us all because of Jesus.
And we, His people, royal priesthood, Body, Bride, we have HIS Spirit, living IN us. IN us…
So, when that lying snake come slithering by hissing in your ear, remember WHOSE you are ya’ll!
That song is sooo true, HE really is the very Best Good, Good Father!!!
And Elizabeth, HE never wastes our pain.

A curve ball can be very painful and very sad . . . .
My brother lives in another country; I have prayed for him for a long time.
He once told me that I could write to him but not to include Bible verses, etc.
I sent him some Johnny Cash music which is filled with the message of the Gospel.
Now my brother is in hospice and in his latest note he wrote to me about GOD.

Lord help me to always remember Proverbs 3:5,6 to trust in You with
all my heart and not try to tell You
what I need and how you can fix it but in all my ways let You guide me, for You know what is best and how I can be ready for the unexpected “curveballs” in my life.
