I Prayed have prayed
Father, we pray that You would point the youth of our nation back to You. As they struggle with identity, Lord, help them to find their identities in You.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Analysis. The latest midterm election showed that younger people broke hard for liberal politicians and liberal policies like abortion and LGBT advocacy.

Who is praying on the wall?

This political shift coincides with a steady decline in church attendance nationwide. Fewer than half of Millennials and Gen Z attend church weekly, and Gen Z is the least religious generation in America.

Meanwhile, many are embracing liberalism with religious zeal.

Why are younger people departing from a Biblical worldview?

How did this happen?

This is a complex, tragic problem with many layers, but there is at least one lesson we can take away to do better with the next generation.

See, the Enemy had a strategic plan to disciple an entire generation in his ways:

  • Sow lust through easy access to pornography.
  • Through TV, teach them worldliness, rebellion, witchcraft and dishonor to parents.
  • Through school teachers, sow unbelief into their hearts.
  • Convince parents to send their kids, totally untrained and unprepared, to universities full of debauchery.
  • Fill professors with pride and unbelief so they will tear down every aspect of their students’ faith and fill them with their own intellectual pride.
  • Create hookup culture and extended adolescence so kids never have to “wake up” to face the consequences of their choices or consider what they truly believe.
  • Make the church powerless to address true bondage by having them ignore inner healing, deliverance, and freedom ministries.

Satan had a plan. What was the church’s plan to combat all this?

Youth group once a week.

For most kids, it wasn’t enough.

Parents have discipled their kids in character: how to be kind and generous and humble and hardworking, etc. They have disciplined their kids in life skills like keeping a clean room and working hard at school and being polite. But when it came to spiritual matters and the biblical worldview, too many parents outsourced that job to a youth group or a pastor.

But parents are called to teach their kids how to think biblically.

Discipleship must be daily, and not just in life skills, but apologetics, theology, prayer, the power of God, and missions. If kids were taken by their Dad to volunteer at the pregnancy crisis center, they would think differently on abortion. If they had been taught how to walk someone through freedom from same-sex attraction, instead of just avoiding the topic, they would have more conviction on the LGBT issue. If they had been taken on a family mission trip to a country ravaged by communism or socialism, they would have first-hand evidence of how socialism kills and impoverishes.

And while fathers must take the lead, too often mothers are alone in their discipleship efforts.

I have a very close friend whose father led the family in an extended Bible study every night during dinner. This blew my mind when I heard it, but I see the fruit. This woman is one of the most biblically-rooted, mature Christians I know.

Sadly, I hear most fathers speaking more passionately about sports than the Bible. Were their dinner tables any different?

I hope I don’t say this in arrogance. I was an eldest brother who did little in this regard. Now, I humbly hope I can heed my own advice.

For this column, I asked a member of Gen Z to provide some insight into this question: why is the younger generation departing from church and a biblical worldview?

The answer:

The first thing that came to mind…why Gen Z is embracing liberalism and abandoning biblical values is… it is easier. The narrow road is really hard, especially in a world where social media and so much sin is so readily available. In a lot of liberal ideals, a lot of those sins are normalized, and in the Christian world, it’s a sin. It’s a lot easier, and it’s a lot more accepting. All people want to be accepted.

She went on to say people want to have an identity, and when they don’t have it in Christ, liberalism gives them that identity and acceptance. I asked how we could be praying for Gen Z:

For prayer, just true revelation that our generation can’t ignore, true encounters with the Lord, whatever that looks like. And that they would realize that life devoted to the Lord is genuinely so much better than anything this world can offer. Whatever it takes. Ask the Lord to revive us back to Him, to show our generation our true first love.

This is a good point. Ultimately, children are responsible for their decisions and relationship with God. Parents do not take the full blame, nor do I intend to blame them, only to learn what we can do better going forward. To me, parents are the answer, not the problem.

Thankfully, God will bring many of these kids home to Him, but let’s not make the same mistake again. Let us not be ignorant of the Enemy’s schemes. Let’s not outsource discipleship to a weekly church event.

There was a time in American when culture helped parents disciple their kids, but that time ended with the sexual revolution. Now, culture is working full-time to disciple the next generation into the ways of the Enemy.

If the Enemy is discipling full-time, let’s not have our discipleship be part-time.

We can do this.

With that in mind, let us pray:

-Father, bring the next generation into a biblical worldview. Bring home the prodigals, and let your Word take its proper place in society again.

-Father, don’t let us lose this next generation! Release grace for true discipleship in our churches, especially for the youth.

-Father, empower and embolden Christian fathers to train up their children in your ways and your Word.

Verses to press into as you intercede on this issue:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt. 28:19-20).

“and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2).

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it (Prov. 22:6).

Thank you, Casey, such excellent insight. Lord Jesus, I pray that Your Love would captivate Gen Z and let them see that a relationship with You supersedes anything else this world has to offer. I pray that they would experience first hand, Acts 17:28… “In Him, we live and move and have our being.” In Jesus’ Mighty Name, AMEN

Yes, this prayer says it all by bringing all confusion and controversial thoughts to Jesus! Faith in him brings peace and well-being. Satan hates each and everyone of us and would do anything to kill us as people because we are like Jesus. Satan wants nothing more than to create confusion and control the minds of young people. I pray 🙏 for people not to fall into his demonic deception!

Father, please burn the dross that has been placed into the hearts and mind of Gen Z by the media, the culture, the public school indoctrination system, any other ungodly influence, and anything they have done or experienced out by Your all-consuming, holy fire. Replace that with Yoir Word. Please make THAT readily available to them in versions that they can understand and help the church including us parents who are part of Your church to focus on essentials, on that which is salvation and that which brings healing and restoration. Help us to take responsibility as members of Your body, discipling our own children everyday in our own homes, at restaurants where we take our adult children out for regular lunches, in their homes, via text. Help is to love holy lives so that we can be salt and light for our children and Gen Z. Help us to love and serve You & them and all.of our own children with pure and sincere hearts and help us to do this in Your strength, with Your wisdom and Your Guidance and Your Spirit. Ep us not to be hypocritical Pharisees, but genuine and transparent. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Father, You say that You are faithful to ALL generations. I pray that You would turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the wisdom of the just. May the power of the gospel demonstrated with signs and wonders turn this generation from the power of sin to the power of God. Pour out Your Spirit on this generation. Set them ablaze with Your Holy fire. May our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren flourish in Your presence.

Certainly a worrisome trend. Partly the education professionals are to be blamed, but we have also been taught from early on that we must respect the children’s choice to come to the Lord by themselves. This is partly true, but we could perhaps do a better job in making clear commitment ourselves to be a model for them.

My daughter has been tricked by Satan, destroyed her 6 year marriage to her husband, destroyed her career and is now living with her girlfriend. Claims to be atheist and now studying witchcraft. She lives a few blocks away and since we won’t accept her life choices, she will not come over. Please pray God does whatever it takes to bring her and her soon to be ex-husband whom is also lost spiritually.

Heavenly Father, Satan lies have convinced many that You are mean Spirited and the Bible is oppressive. This has cultivated a spirit of rebellion toward parents, the church, and Your perfect design for humanity. Forgive us for thinking that loving them meant affirming them in their rebellion or being silent. Romans 1:21,22 “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…” May we live by Your. Spirit…. parents and grandparents and fellow Christians…. glorifying You more and more and thanking You for every good thing! Strengthen Your church to MAGNIFY JESUS and show those who are deceived THE WAY to the ABUNDANT LIFE! Amen

Everybody I talk to has no idea that they are sinners who have broken God’s commandments given to establish a safe and prosperous society. They usually have no fear of God or that one day they will face His judgment and fail the test. The message of His love and forgiveness means little to those who don’t know they need it. This same message seems to be rare even in churches today so that generations have little concern for their real future in eternity. I have found over the last 50 years that starting with a realization of my sin and a fear of His displeasure have kept me on the straight and narrow path that Jesus talked about and enjoying His glorious pleasure when I do. The scripture talks a lot about the fear of God but it seems we don’t. Maybe its a missing piece in the GenZ puzzle.

I already posted a comment but do want to add that… the innocence of our children since the sixties has sure been stolen from them. Divorce in my own family created such a lack of trust for our hearts.
We took on way more emotional responsibility and were left on our own to find a way.
Yet God reached His Abba Father hand down from Heaven and brought me safely home.
He loves the orphans!!!!!
He can do it for me. He can do it for generation Z!

I resonated with the statement:
“Let us not be ignorant of the Enemy’s schemes. Let’s not outsource discipleship to a weekly church event.”

My wife and I have joined Contagious Disciple Making and are learning HOW to reach out to the lost and HOW to facilitate a Discovery Bible Study that, by design, empowers participants to become followers of Christ and become disciple maker makers, even if they were unbelievers at the outset of the study!

The heart of Contagious Disciple Making is the Discovery Bible Study, DBS. A fairly short set of questions is repeatedly applied to various Bible passages or Bible stories. This simplicity makes it easy for Discovery Bible Studies to replicate in multiple streams and for multiple generations! It is designed for people who hate going to church and is easy for any parent to facilitate within their own family. You do not need a degree in theology to become an effective disciple maker! All you need is a Bible, the DBS question list (which is easy to memorize after a few sessions), a scripture list, and some pencil and paper.

Here are the DBS questions:
https://www.contagiousdisciplemaking.com/post/discovery-bible-study-questions

And here is a nice scripture list to start unbelievers off with:
https://www.contagiousdisciplemaking.com/post/discovery-bible-study-creation-to-christ-scripture-list

Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God (YHVH) with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our strength AND to love one another as ourselves (Mt 22:37-39, 1John 4:21, Mk 12:28-34, Lk 10:25-28).
Jesus, in the Great Commission, commanded us to make disciples by teaching them to obey everything He has commanded us (Mt 28:18-20, Is 8:16)! The Bible contains the instructions He commanded us to obey, which is exactly HOW to love Him and love one another(1John 5:2-3, John 14:21)!

Often, as parents, we fail to see the outcome of what we needed to do. In many ways, it’s sometimes a lack of faith in the fact that God’s word will bear fruit…”as we are faithful to follow it”. That’s especially true in the rearing of children. It’s not hard to see the difference in families that have been diligent in the faith that God will bless their efforts to raise their children in the way they should walk vs. those that have not done it or even have done it with half a heart.
*God, I myself failed in many ways to rear my children as You commanded. I know many who feel exactly the same. Thank you for the forgiveness in our failings and grant us the grace and opportunities to restore the areas that we have failed in before with influencing our families and our world with Your kingdom principles. In Your holy name we humbly ask this… amen.

This all makes perfect sense. I was talking to my wife recently about how young people just aren’t worshipping the Lord. About all of the youth, once they become 18, have stopped coming to church. Young adults also, even our pastor’s kids. If you aren’t engaged in actively worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ, it leaves you wide open to the deception of Satan.. I pray for the youth who once attended our church, and all of the youth throughout the nation. to reject the lies of the enemy, and return to the truth of the Lord. Liberalism is also a snare that the enemy has been setting for centuries now. The two issues seem to go hand in hand. In the mighty name of Jesus, I bind the enemy’s attempts to steal our young people away from church and clear thinking. I loose the fruit of Holy Spirit over them, and their minds. In Jesus’ holy name.

I see many of you saw your children walk away from the Lord after a good Christian upbringing or even a fumbled Christian upbringing.
But don’t lose heart, I was that child. I came back to the Lord when life got truly rough.
I have never looked away from Him again. He calls your children day and night! One day they will turn back…. They can help many others when this happens!
Lord I pray for our children, bring them back to you swiftly!

The first thing our family did every day for many years until the oldest went to college was have Bible study and prayer together. We went through the Bible many, many times! We were in church 3 or more times a week. They loved church and never wanted to miss it! My children were disciplined according to scripture and our home was loving! The minute they were in their middle 20s, they hit the streets running as if they had had a heathenistic upbringing! I, however, trust the scripture that says if they were taught of the LORD, they will return when they are old! I pray for GOD to send laborers to them to remind them of their first love, JESUS! Beyond that I trust GOD to restore what the locusts has tried to steal! FATHER GOD YOUR WORD promises that since my children were taught of YOU that they will return to YOU! Thank YOU for all of YOUR promises for families, in JESUS MIGHTY NAME! Amen!

The biggest inroad by satan to gen z is the lack of biblical discipline. The majority of gen z has never had a spanking, from birth to adulthood! Most have never heard the word NO from their parents or guardians! Most are always asked their OPINIONS by parents and guardians, from when they begin talking! Most have had No chores to do around the house! And ETC. I believe GOD will hold parents accountable for not rearing their children according to scripture. Most well and lovingly disciplined children will not depart from the faith, or if they do, they will return to the faith! FATHER GOD I repent for the times I gave in to my children, instead of holding them accountable for their own actions! Please send laborers to them and bring them to the end of themselves and let them cry out to YOU ABBA FATHER for salvation! I receive YOUR forgiveness and claim my children for the Kingdom of GOD! I claim that they will NOT go to hell, but repent and come back to their First Love JESUS CHRIST! In JESUS NAME I pray! Amen!

Casey,
Thank you for spending your time and talent on an article which has helped 692+ people to pray specifically about a burden many of us carry so deeply that it’s hard for us to articulate. You expertly identified the population targeted and the schemes of the enemy so that intercessors can now apply the word and let God be God in rescuing these beloved youth. I.e. Job 5:7-9, 12-13, etc. May God grant wisdom that comes from heaven which is, first of all, pure, then peace-loving, considerate and submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere to those individuals who have these young people in their lives.

This generation, Lord, has an anointing on it and the evil forces know it! They are trying to take them out. On every side this generation is being assaulted. Drugs, injustice, education, sexualized, decieved, if Satan is putting this much effort in destroying this Generation we KNOW it has a powerful calling upon it! But Jesus! your blood speaks a better word! Mercy on this generation! So, I decree that this generation will be the most powerful for Jesus that has ever been witnessed. Truth and Spirit will reign in this generation! I pray for Jesus to intervene, to power through to blast the enemy and all his schemes! We turn the tables over with our prayers, we empower this generation with our words that agree with the words of the Bible, Jesus said I am the word! So, we proclaim Jesus into our lives by speaking the word of God into our families. We speak the word of God onto this generation through our own families. May we speak a better word with the blood of Jesus over our children and grandchildren! may the bible be the breath of God over our children. make it so Amen in Jesus name

Such a pointed and thought inspired article. Amidst the chaos of the world and our American society the darkness is closing in on our children. It helped me understand how our generation Z is influenced by an environment we helped create but now hate because the fruits of Satan’s efforts are smothering our efforts to foster Godliness within the spirits of our children. Gen Z is/will be succeeded by Gen Alpha. Z denotes an end. Let the greater portion of children’s exposure to ideas in every sphere of life being godless while being raised end with Gen Z. Let Gen Z be returned to the Lord like in a jubilee, and discipled so that Gen Alpha, the new beginning, can be raised radically simply, godly, with the love of the Lord, and the
fellowship of the saints and with power. Let Gen Z return to being like the believers of Acts, in great numbers, while the world returns also to its pagan state, in sharp distinction. (From Jonathan Cahn, The Oracle, paraphrased)

Gen Z has/ is being raised under multiple satanic influences, but God can intervene. “Like the Hero who takes the stage when, we’re on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late, well let me introduce you to amazing grace” (Mercy Me, from “Flawless”)

“Lord, because greater are you who was in us than he who is in the world, we ask that you reclaim Gen Z as your rightful possession for whom you died and rose again. And as they are converted, let them think right and therefore vote right, for life, as the primary issue, as all other issues are tied to this one ( from David Barton, wallbuilders) thereby preserving our land and future generations, such that we may be a light, a city on a hill to other nations once again.

How dismal to read. How great is this battle!
Our Lord has victory over ALL the darkness.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the deliverer of EVIL, break this curse over our nation, this generation and ALL the minds that identify with this madness. Bring YOUR peace, YOUR order and YOUR powerful touch to this time in YOUR world.
Use us as vessels that pray against the forces of darkness out in the open, offering our time to walk beside any lost prisoner now in love and truth.
Draw millions and millions to YOU in desperation to have faith as small as a mustard seed to choose Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Give them understanding to speak out about the freedom and newfound hope they have encountered in YOUR presence!!!

Thank you to IFA for bringing to our attention yet another front in the spiritual battles we face today. I would need way more than twenty-four hours in a day, the energy I had forty years ago, and more ability than I have, to keep abreast, to understand, address, counter, and pray about all that is coming at us. Lord, when it felt like this in the mid-late sixties, You came by Your Spirit in power and saved and transformed – I don’t know how many – in the millions. Lord, ask You to do so again, and Lord, come quickly. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws nigh. Lord, as we are to be aware of all the darkness and the plots of the enemy and to know the times and the seasons, help us to stay focused on the Light.

This is a complex question : with an easy answer:Back in the 1960 ty;’s many mainline church’s quit preaching the BIBLE and started to preach social justice. ! mainline church took “ON WORD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS ot of their hymn book. Because it was against war. VIETNAM war did not help because people thought it was unjust. because the U.S. was nit there to win but for the Military Industrial complex . A war can not be fought by WHIZ KIDS IN D.C. Making decisions in the field. I was a Law Enforcement for 50 yrs and responded to many domestic call’s. I noticed very few homes that had CHRISTIAN material in there homes. Both parents worked . teenagers had no supervision after school. Parents did not raise their children in a christian home. the parents that went to church did not act like Christians other than in church. Sports and recreation took over going to church on Sunday’s . People in general wanted to recreate on Sunday’s. I even knew of pastors and church’s that would shut down for SUPER BALL SUNDAY.. I belong to The Fellow Ship of Christian Peace Officers . I worked for the KING CO. S.O. Once a month on a SAT. there was a Breakfast with a SEATTLE sport’s figure to attract members. ( I have no muse for sports any longer after working ball games at the KINGDOME) One sat. PASTOR KEN HUTCHERSON . Spoke. and as he was getting ready to speak almost every one started to clap. He stopped the clapping. and stated ” DO NOT CLAP FOR ME AS A FOOTBALL PLAYER. YOU AS PARENTS AND FATHER’S ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN YOUR CHILDREN’S LIFE. INSTEAD OF RUSHING HOME AFTER CHURCH TO TURN ON A T.V. and watch a 6″ figure run acroos the screen BE A FATHER TO YOUR CHILDREN” From that HUTCH and I and his wife and family became real close. He taught a BIBLE study in my house once a week open to all of the churches in NO BEND and SNOQUALMIE wa. and any one that did nit attend. sometimes there was not enough room in the house and we had to go out in the yard. I attended HUTCH’S memorial service . and the church probably had 3.000 people there. along with RUSH LIMBAUGH attendingHUTCH . ( NO ONE KNEW RUSH WAS THERE )

To me, this move in our culture has gone beyond “liberalism”, it is leftist. May God in His great mercy and grace wake up His Church and empower us to STAND for truth.

Thank you for this very informative article and encouragement to parents. when I came to know the Lord I knew very little of the Bible, but as I prayed the Holy Spirit taught me how to bring family devotion into the home. My husband and I raised five children and each night after dinner we would pray take one Book, read a chapter from the book each night. It always encouraged conversation and this was a very special time for us as a family and many times we did not know or understand all we read and may have had to skip a night, but we always would start again and not give up. My children are grown and have families, but have taken with them the practice of reading the Word of God with their families. We are not a perfect family, but those times became the most precious times for us to learn and share our Faith. As a parent I did not give the role of training my children up in His ways to my schools or church. It is our responsibility and He will lead us as we ASK. Let us as prayers ask the Lord to “raise up a generation who knew not the Lord” to be a generation who will know Our God and know the wonders of Our God.

Humbled and guilty of raising children outside of the church. I truly now see the tragic results along with their confusion.
We repent Father and ask for Grace in helping our youth with an identity in you. 🙏

It’s not too late as Grandparents. If grandchildren live near read to them whenever the opportunity comes. Even be vulnerable and share with your adult children and grandchildren were you may have failed. I always make sure whenever our children visit we have a time to redirect our thoughts on Faith and the Word of God. When we do family vacation I have a morning prayer and Bible time. We need to make decisions to pass onto our children and grandchildren the Faith we were given by our parents. I often reflect on the long walks to church in N.Y.C. with my grandfather, it was just what we did and I grew up realizing My husband and I had the responsibility to give to our children what we were given. I encourage all to reclaim the Faith passed onto you or to just start. He Will Help You!!

Humbled and guilty of expecting Sunday school and youth group to do the job, of having my own devotional time each day without including our kids in some way other than my husband saying a blessing before dinner. We looked after their moral upbringing but did not make the Bible a vital part of our family’s focus.
We repent and ask for guidance in being proactive with our granddaughter – not giving up when she resists – but leaving the results to God.
